Artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n<p>Burton said Wednesday that seeing a website that had used AI to blend his drawings with Disney characters \u201creally disturbed me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt wasn\u2019t an intellectual thought \u2014 it was just an internal, visceral feeling,\u201d Burton told reporters during a preview of \u201cThe World of Tim Burton\u201d exhibition at London\u2019s Design Museum. \u201cI looked at those things and I thought, \u2018Some of these are pretty good.\u2019 \u2026 (But) it gave me a weird sort of scary feeling inside.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Burton said he thinks AI is unstoppable, because \u201conce you can do it, people will do it.\u201d But he scoffed when asked if he\u2019d use the technology in this work. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo take over the world?\u201d he laughed.<\/p>\n<p>The exhibition reveals Burton to be an analogue artist, who started off as a child in the 1960s experimenting with paints and colored pencils in his suburban Californian home.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wasn\u2019t, early on, a very verbal person,\u201d Burton said. \u201cDrawing was a way of expressing myself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Decades later, after films including \u201cEdward Scissorhands,\u201d \u201cBatman,\u201d \u201cThe Nightmare Before Christmas\u201d and \u201cBeetlejuice,\u201d his ideas still begin with drawing. The exhibition includes 600 items from movie studio collections and Burton\u2019s personal archive, and traces those ideas as they advance from sketches through collaboration with set, production and costume designers on the way to the big screen.<\/p>\n<p>London is the exhibition\u2019s final stop on a decade-long tour of 14 cities in 11 countries. It has been reconfigured and expanded with 90 new objects for its run in the British capital, where Burton has lived for a quarter century.<\/p>\n<p>The show includes early drawings and oddities, including a competition-winning \u201ccrush litter\u201d sign a teenage Burton designed for Burbank garbage trucks. There\u2019s also a recreation of Burton\u2019s studio, down to the trays of paints and \u201cCurse of Frankenstein\u201d mug full of pencils.<\/p>\n<p>Alongside hundreds of drawings, there are props, puppets, set designs and iconic costumes, including Johnny Depp\u2019s \u201cEdward Scissorhands\u201d talons and the black latex Catwoman costume worn by Michelle Pfeiffer in \u201cBatman Returns.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had very generous access to Tim\u2019s archive in London, stuffed full of thousands of drawings, storyboards from stop-motion films, sketches, character notes, poems,\u201d said exhibition curator Maria McLintock. \u201cAnd how to synthesize such a wide ranging and meandering career within one exhibition was a fun challenge \u2014 but definitely a challenge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Seeing it has not been a wholly fun experience for Burton, who said he\u2019s unable to look too closely at the items on display.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s like seeing your dirty laundry put on the walls,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s quite amazing. It\u2019s a bit overwhelming.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Burton, whose long-awaited horror-comedy sequel <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/beetlejuice-movie-review-burton-keaton-ortega-d2c29ca4f14ba504488486d72e2cf65a\">\u201cBeetlejuice Beetlejuice\u201d<\/a><\/span> opened at the Venice Film Festival in August, is currently filming the second series of Netflix\u2019 Addams Family-themed series \u201cWednesday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>These days he is a major Hollywood director whose American gothic style has spawned an adjective \u2014 \u201cBurtoneqsue.\u201d But he still feels like an outsider.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce you feel that way, it never leaves you,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEach film I did was a struggle,\u201d he added, noting that early films like \u201cPee-wee\u2019s Big Adventure\u201d from 1985 and \u201cBeetlejuice\u201d in 1988 received some negative reviews. \u201cIt seems like it was a pleasant, fine, easy journey, but each one leaves its emotional scars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McLintock said Burton \u201cis a deeply emotional filmmaker.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think that\u2019s what drew me to his films as a child,\u201d she said. \u201cHe really celebrates the misunderstood outcast, the benevolent monster. So it\u2019s been quite a weird but fun experience spending so much time in his brain and his creative process.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis films are often called dark,\u201d she added. \u201cI don\u2019t agree with that. And if they are dark, there\u2019s a very much a kind of hope in the darkness.
