Here\u2019s why Boeing Starliner\u2019s astronauts aren\u2019t on it"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n     data-ad-layout-key=\"-fb+5w+4e-db+86\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"7910942971\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-editable=\"content\" itemprop=\"articleBody\" data-reorderable=\"content\">\n<p>\n    <cite class=\"source__cite\"><br \/>\n      <span class=\"source__location\" data-editable=\"location\"\/><br \/>\n      <span class=\"source__text\" data-editable=\"source\">CNN<\/span><br \/>\n        \u00a0\u2014\u00a0<br \/>\n    <\/cite>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm26p3d64000mtto3brq6dnnw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The two test pilots for the inaugural crewed flight of Boeing\u2019s Starliner spacecraft \u2014 NASA\u2019s Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore \u2014 left Earth for the International Space Station under the impression their trip would last only about one week.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm26p8txb00033b6m8w3pj2wb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Months later, after determining that the technical issues the Starliner experienced on the first leg of their journey posed too much of a risk, NASA decided to return Williams and Wilmore home aboard a SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2m572eb00023b6maf3ente7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But that did not mean the astronauts would get the first flight back to Earth.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm26p8txb00043b6mjy8zsvqp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A SpaceX Crew Dragon,\u00a0on a mission dubbed Crew-8, left the International Space Station on Wednesday, but Williams and Wilmore will once again be left behind for the simple reason that they are not assigned to that specific spacecraft.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm26p8txb00053b6mw0u5tgzi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Notably, the four astronauts that are assigned to Crew-8\u2019s mission \u2014 NASA\u2019s Matthew Dominick, Michael Barratt and Jeanette Epps as well as Alexander Grebenkin of the Russian space agency, Roscosmos \u2014 have been on the ISS since March 5, roughly three months longer than Williams and Wilmore.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm26p8txb00063b6mg68m6fag@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That\u2019s because the Crew-8 team is part of a regular crew rotation at the orbiting laboratory, and routine missions typically last about six months.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm26p8txb00073b6mq0ak5ssw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The team disembarked from the ISS Wednesday afternoon and is heading for a splashdown off the coast of Florida. Spaceflight tends to be more complex \u2014 and requires more prior planning \u2014 than that.\n    <\/p>\n<h3 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm26p8ucz00143b6mglx9nuyh@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"how-williams-and-wilmore-wound-up-here\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n        How Williams and Wilmore wound up here<br \/>\n<\/h3>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm26p8txb000b3b6mdlxuqzzl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Williams and Wilmore did not go to the ISS as part of a normal crew rotation.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm26p8txb000c3b6micd6cpn9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Instead, the pair ventured to orbit as part of a historic effort: Starliner\u2019s first crewed flight. They departed on June 4, mostly without their own toiletries and other personal comforts, expecting a prompt return to Earth.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm26p8txb000d3b6mtqts50ae@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Williams and Wilmore were then left in limbo by several crucial issues, including gas leaks and thruster problems, that plagued their Starliner capsule during the first leg of its trip. NASA then chose to leave the capsule \u2014 along with Williams and Wilmore \u2014 at the ISS while engineers worked to hash out what went wrong.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm26p8txb000e3b6mg373zhhb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            After weeks of uncertainty, NASA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/08\/24\/science\/boeing-starliner-nasa-astronauts-spacex\/index.html\">made the call in late August <\/a>that it would be too risky to return Williams and Wilmore home aboard Starliner.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm26p8txb000f3b6mwclcvumx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And the space agency had scrambled to find an alternative route home. That\u2019s how NASA arrived at the decision to put Williams and Wilmore on Crew-9, a mission that at the time had not yet left Earth.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm26p8txb000g3b6mzdnahhdk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Two astronauts who had been slated to fly on Crew-9 before the Boeing Starliner debacle \u2014 NASA\u2019s Zena Cardman and Stephanie Wilson \u2014 had to be booted off in order to make room for Williams and Wilmore on the return trip.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm26p8txb000h3b6m109nusj1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Crew-9 mission then launched with just two astronauts, two empty seats, and some ballst \u2014 or deadweight \u2014 to balance out the physics of flying without a full crew of four. The Crew-9 spacecraft <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/09\/29\/science\/spacex-crew-9-iss-starliner-astronauts\/index.html\">arrived<\/a> at the ISS on September 29.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm26p8txb000i3b6maob1llxr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Williams and Wilmore, for the record, have now been on the space station more than 18 weeks.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm26p8txb000j3b6mi9i04p5n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And Boeing\u2019s Starliner ultimately <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/09\/06\/science\/boeing-starliner-return-without-astronauts\/index.html\">returned home from space empty<\/a> on September 6.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm26p8txb000k3b6mimp07jvd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            So what exactly would Williams and Wilmore do for another four or five months in space?\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm26p8txb000l3b6m33jpw8a5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            When the pair arrived at the ISS, they were guests. But now, they\u2019re at work, having joined Expedition 72, or the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/international-space-station\/expedition-missions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">international crew<\/a> of astronauts currently serving as the space station\u2019s official staff.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm26p8txb000m3b6mnld1q0lp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Williams even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=STKNja4hX70\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">took over as the commander<\/a> of the entire space station on September 22.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm26p8txb000n3b6mufssbdtu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            NASA has said they\u2019ve seamlessly integrated with the group, picking up everyday tasks aboard the orbiting spacewalks outside the space station, maintaining the orbiting laboratory and carrying out a tight schedule of science experiments.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm26p8txb000p3b6m16jsk6my@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And NASA previously confirmed the Starliner astronauts are prepared to make such a shift.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm26p8txb000q3b6majfqgvqd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cA couple years ago, we made the decision \u2014 knowing that this was a test flight \u2014 to make sure that we had the right resources, supplies and training for the crew, just in case they needed to be on ISS, for whatever reason, for a longer period of time,\u201d said Dana Weigel, NASA\u2019s manager of the International Space Station Program, during an August 7 briefing.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm26p8txb000r3b6mua3y368d@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cButch and Suni are fully trained,\u201d Weigel added. \u201cThey\u2019re capable and current with EVA (spacewalks), with robotics, with all the things we need them to do.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm26p8txb000s3b6m4aplny3t@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            During recent updates about ISS activities from NASA, the space agency said Williams, Wilmore and their crewmates, NASA astronaut Nick Hague and Russia\u2019s Aleksandr Gorbunov, will help move their Crew-9 capsule from its current docking port to the port that opened when Crew-8 began its journey home from space. They recently spent some time training for that task, according to updates from NASA.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2m56lbf00003b6mi9jookpj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Williams and Wilmore have also had some downtime lately as they waited days to support Crew-8\u2019s departure, which had been repeatedly delayed by bad weather surrounding Florida.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2m5ka8h00063b6m9qbtcdd1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But the pair have also kept busy with experiments and other daily duties. One October 18 <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.nasa.gov\/spacestation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">update<\/a> from NASA, for example, states that during a half day of work, Williams took a cognition test and \u201cchecked connections on radio frequency identification hardware,\u201d while \u201cWilmore activated a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/mission\/station\/research-explorer\/facility\/?#id=8120\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fluorescence microscope<\/a>\u00a0to observe how particles of different sizes\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/mission\/station\/research-explorer\/investigation\/?#id=9106\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gel and coarsen<\/a>.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm26p8txb000v3b6mlcbnhe8m@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Williams and Wilmore had already logged a combined total of 500 days in space before launching on the Starliner test flight this year. I mean, there\u2019s no benefit to it at all.
