{"id":117934,"date":"2024-10-24T19:47:44","date_gmt":"2024-10-24T12:47:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=117934"},"modified":"2024-10-24T19:47:44","modified_gmt":"2024-10-24T12:47:44","slug":"penn-state-bans-biologist-deb-kelly-from-doing-research-after-investigation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=117934","title":{"rendered":"Penn State bans biologist Deb Kelly from doing research after investigation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n     data-ad-layout-key=\"-fb+5w+4e-db+86\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"7910942971\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"article-body\">\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \"><a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/topic\/penn-state\">Penn State<\/a> has taken the unusual step of<b> <\/b>revealing it has \u201cindefinitely\u201d prohibited a biomedical engineer from conducting research, after a review of her scientific papers found several contained \u201cunreliable data.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">The investigation <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.deb-kelly-lab.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">into the work of Deb Kelly<\/a> was sparked by allegations that the data in some of the <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mri.psu.edu\/mri\/personnel-directory\/dfk5267\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dozens of scientific papers<\/a> she has co-authored <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/pubpeer.com\/search?q=deborah+kelly\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">appeared problematic<\/a>. Penn State asked external experts to review her work, and they \u201cconfirmed the presence of unreliable data in several papers,\u201d according to a university statement. The university has alerted the scientific journals that published the affected papers, as well as the <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/ori.hhs.gov\/\">federal agency that monitors research integrity<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cDr. Kelly is currently employed at Penn State, but, as of May 2024, she is indefinitely prohibited from conducting research, pursuing grants or contracts, submitting publications, or making presentations on behalf of the Pennsylvania State University,\u201d the university said in its statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Kelly<b> <\/b>did not respond to multiple requests for comment. A lawyer who <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/retractionwatch.com\/2024\/09\/11\/penn-state-prof-earns-second-retraction-faces-third-following-university-probe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">submitted a letter on Kelly\u2019s behalf<\/a> to a scientific journal also did not respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">It\u2019s rare to see universities permanently strip researchers of their ability to conduct research \u2014 in part, because universities rarely make these sanctions public, said <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/retractionwatch.com\/meet-the-retraction-watch-staff\/about\/\">Ivan Oransky<\/a>, <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/retractionwatch.com\/\">co-founder of Retraction Watch<\/a>, which tracks retractions and scientific misconduct, and <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/retractionwatch.com\/2024\/09\/11\/penn-state-prof-earns-second-retraction-faces-third-following-university-probe\/\">first reported the investigation into Kelly\u2019s work<\/a>. Still, in the 14 years since Retraction Watch began, Oransky said he\u2019s seen only a \u201ccouple\u201d of permanent bans. \u201cIt is quite rare.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">What happened at Penn State \u201cseems like an unusual case,\u201d Oransky added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">In recent years, the scientific community has become more aware of the scope of misconduct in their ranks, <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-024-02423-4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">and more transparent when it happens<\/a>. Still, stories of outright fraud in science remain rare.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">In Philadelphia, a Temple researcher came under fire in 2020 when his colleagues <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/health\/temple-university-research-domenico-pratico-accused-misconduct-20240118.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">raised concerns about the validity of his findings<\/a>, and several of his papers <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"http:\/\/retractiondatabase.org\/RetractionSearch.aspx#?auth%3dPratic%25u00f2%252c%2bDomenico\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">have since been retracted from the academic literature<\/a>. (The researcher, Domenico Pratic\u00f2, denied engaging in scientific misconduct.) Last year, a former longtime scientist at the University of Pennsylvania agreed to a seven-year ban on using federal funds to conduct research after an investigation determined that his lab had <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/health\/penn-falsified-research-william-armstead-20230705.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">falsified data from experiments in pigs with brain injuries<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">In comments to Retraction Watch, sent through her legal counsel and<a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/retractionwatch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Dr.-Deborah-Kelly-Statement9413593.1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> published in September<\/a>, Penn State\u2019s <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/retractionwatch.com\/2024\/09\/11\/penn-state-prof-earns-second-retraction-faces-third-following-university-probe\/\">Kelly defended her work<\/a>, and said she was \u201cunder no restrictions\u201d in her research. In a subsequent comment to the outlet published later that month, also sent via her counsel, Kelly said that <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/retractionwatch.com\/2024\/09\/20\/penn-state-barred-embattled-professor-from-doing-research\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">she was \u201cembarking on new opportunities.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Kelly is listed as the <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.oncologyllc.com\/the-team\">executive director of Structural Oncology LLC<\/a>, which offers <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.oncologyllc.com\/technology-matters\">technical expertise to study the molecular underpinnings of disease<\/a>, and says it is creating <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.oncologyllc.com\/cancer-research\">at-home rapid tests for some types of cancer.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><h3 class=\"block font-semibold mt-8 mb-4 text-5 leading-5 sm:text-8 sm:leading-8 lg:text-9 lg:leading-9\">Correcting the record<\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Kelly is a professor of biomedical engineering and the <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.deb-kelly-lab.com\/about-us\">director of the Center for Structural Oncology at Penn State<\/a>, where she used sophisticated imaging to visualize important components of cells. In 2022, she led a team that <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.psu.edu\/news\/engineering\/story\/guarding-genome-researchers-uncover-full-3d-structure-p53-protein\">detailed the three-dimensional structure of p53<\/a>, known as the tumor suppressor protein that protects DNA from damage that can lead to cancer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Also in 2022, she served as <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/microscopy.org\/past-presidents\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">president of the Microscopy Society of America<\/a>. In June 2024, she appeared in a podcast <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/podcasts.apple.com\/us\/podcast\/speakers-who-get-results\/id1491842861\">series called \u201cSpeakers Who Get Results,\u201d<\/a> as a \u201c<a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=mlGv3qxIB6I\">trailblazer in medical research<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">As of the end of October, four of Kelly\u2019s scientific papers have been <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/pubs.rsc.org\/en\/content\/articlelanding\/2024\/nr\/d4nr90151g\">retracted from the medical literature<\/a>. The notice <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1002\/adma.202413983\">accompanying each retraction<\/a> states that <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/sciadv.ads9451\">Kelly disagrees with the decision<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Several other papers by Kelly have been <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/pubpeer.com\/search?q=deborah+kelly\">flagged as potentially problematic on PubPeer<\/a>, a site where users discuss research articles after publication.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">One retracted paper, published in 2021, was highlighted in an article on the website of Penn State\u2019s College of Engineering, describing how Kelly\u2019s lab visualized the three-dimensional movement of a virus, a technique that <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/news.engr.psu.edu\/2021\/kelly-deb-human-virus-imaging.aspx\">could be used to study vaccines and anti-viral treatments<\/a>. After an inquiry from The Inquirer, the university added an editor\u2019s note: \u201cThe article on which this story is based <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1002\/adma.202413983\">has been retracted<\/a>. Following <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/researchsupport.psu.edu\/orp\/research-integrity\/research-misconduct-process\/\">established research integrity processes<\/a> conducted by Penn State, this paper was retracted by the journal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \"><a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gligorijeviclab.org\/\">Bojana Gligorijevic<\/a>, a professor and director of light microscopy in the bioengineering department at <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/topic\/temple-university\">Temple University<\/a>, declined to comment on Kelly\u2019s work, but said these types of investigations \u2014 and fallout \u2014 can have an impact. \u201cIn general, cases like this tremendously affect mentees\u2019 lives and career prospects, and lower [the] reputation of science in the society,\u201d she said. \u201cBut the field can recover fairly quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><h3 class=\"block font-semibold mt-8 mb-4 text-5 leading-5 sm:text-8 sm:leading-8 lg:text-9 lg:leading-9\">Seeds of doubt<\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">The statement from Penn State says the university launched an investigation into Kelly\u2019s work after it was \u201cmade aware of the potential presence of unreliable data.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">For months, <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncl.ac.uk\/medical-sciences\/people\/profile\/thomasmccorvie.html\">Thomas McCorvie, a senior research associate<\/a> at Newcastle University in the UK, has been <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/pubpeer.com\/publications\/9D1DF18CA073911C4A082CF8598E24\">posting<b> <\/b>his concerns about Kelly\u2019s work on PubPeer<\/a>, noting that her papers appear to mix up what proteins they are describing. In <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/pubpeer.com\/publications\/5E181133A9D26016A8DAC96F45AB7E\">one 2017 paper, for instance<\/a>, \u201cthe authors appeared to have taken a 3D map of a different protein, edited it by deleting sections of it, and described it to be the breast cancer-associated protein BRCA1,\u201d McCorvie said in an email. \u201cBasically image duplication with editing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">In other work from her lab, he said, the protein structures they present don\u2019t look like proteins, and appear to include manipulations.
