The meds can also activate certain T cells, white blood cells key to the immune system, which can have anti-inflammatory effects.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Semaglutide \u2014 the active ingredient in Ozempic and Wegovy \u2014 was associated with 40% to 70% reduced risks of a first-time Alzheimer\u2019s diagnosis among Type 2 diabetics, according to research led by Case Western Reserve University biomedical informatics professor\u00a0Rong Xu (pictured here).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Xu\u2019s team analyzed three years of electronic records for approximately 1 million Type 2 diabetic Americans free of Alzheimer\u2019s at the start of the study. The researchers compared semaglutide to other GLP-1 drugs and the anti-diabetes medications insulin, metformin, DPP-4 inhibitors, sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors, sulfonylureas and thiazolidinediones.<\/p>\n<p>Semaglutide was associated with 40% to 70% reduced risks of a <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/08\/21\/lifestyle\/where-you-live-can-affect-chances-of-a-dementia-diagnosis-study\/\">first-time Alzheimer\u2019s diagnosis<\/a>, especially against insulin and even compared to other GLP-1 drugs.<\/p>\n<p>The findings \u2014 which were consistent across gender, age and obesity subgroups \u2014 were published Thursday in the journal\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1002\/alz.14313\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Alzheimer\u2019s &amp; Dementia: The Journal of the Alzheimer\u2019s Association<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1002\/alz.14313\"><em>,<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>About 120,000 Americans die from Alzheimer\u2019s each year. <span class=\"credit\">ImagineStock \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.alz.org\/alzheimers-dementia\/facts-figures#:~:text=navigate%20dementia%20care.-,Prevalence,living%20with%20Alzheimer's%20in%202024.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nearly 7 million Americans<\/a> 65 and older are living with Alzheimer\u2019s, which gradually destroys memory and thinking skills and the ability to perform daily tasks.
