Its extreme location is rife with what can best be described as shenanigans on an epic scale.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now it can add a powerful cosmic accelerator known as a PeVatron to its list of japes. An observatory high in the mountains of Mexico has recorded repeated emission of some of the highest-energy gamma rays ever recorded from a single point close to the galactic center.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The nature of this source, named HAWC J1746-2856, is unknown \u2013 but, over a period of seven years, the High-Altitude Water Cherenkov (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawc-observatory.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HAWC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) observatory recorded 98 gamma-ray events with energy levels exceeding 100 teraelectronvolts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;These results are a glimpse at the center of the Milky Way to an order of magnitude higher energies than ever seen before,&#8221; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/discover.lanl.gov\/news\/1022-hawc-gamma-rays\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">says physicist Pat Harding<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Los Alamos National Laboratory.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;The research for the first time confirms a PeVatron source of ultrahigh-energy gamma rays at a location in the Milky Way known as the Galactic Center Ridge, meaning the galactic center is home to some of the most extreme physical processes in the Universe.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_141392\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-141392\" style=\"width: 642px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/images\/2024\/10\/crab-nebula-jwst.jpg\" alt=\"Something in The Galactic Center Is Spitting Out Powerful Gamma-Rays Right at Us\" width=\"642\" height=\"559\" class=\"size-full wp-image-141392\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/images\/2024\/10\/crab-nebula-jwst.jpg 642w, https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/images\/2024\/10\/crab-nebula-jwst-477x415.jpg 477w, https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/images\/2024\/10\/crab-nebula-jwst-600x522.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 642px) 100vw, 642px\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-141392\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Crab Nebula supernova remnant, seen here in infrared wavelengths, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/for-the-first-time-scientists-have-detected-cosmic-ray-superaccelerators-in-our-galaxy\">is a PeVatron<\/a>. (<span><a href=\"https:\/\/webbtelescope.org\/contents\/media\/images\/2023\/137\/01HBBMDH12APPEGB8DXVVEP8XA?news=true\">NASA, ESA, CSA, STScI, Tea Temim\/Princeton University<\/a>)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PeVatrons are what you get when you mix cosmic rays \u2013 mostly charged protons and atomic nuclei streaming through space almost at light speed \u2013 and giant, natural particle accelerators. <\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.45px;\">Environments such as supernova remnants, stars being born, and the powerful magnetic fields around supermassive black holes can be PeVatrons.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"letter-spacing: -0.45px;\">If the particle accelerator is strong enough, it can accelerate the cosmic rays to extremely high energies, up to teraelectronvolt ranges \u2013 that&#8217;s a trillion electronvolts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In spite of their power, such high-energy accelerators aren&#8217;t easy to find.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;A lot of those processes are so rare you wouldn&#8217;t expect them to be happening in our galaxy, or they occur on scales that don&#8217;t correlate with the size of our galaxy,&#8221; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/discover.lanl.gov\/news\/1022-hawc-gamma-rays\/\" style=\"letter-spacing: -0.45px;\"><span>Harding explains<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. &#8220;For instance, a black hole eating another black hole would be an event only expected outside our galaxy.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the accelerated cosmic ray then decelerates suddenly, due to an interaction with something else in space like a magnetic field or a dust cloud, the energy it carries is released in the form of gamma radiation. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gamma<\/span> radiation cannot travel very far in Earth&#8217;s atmosphere, which means we can&#8217;t detect them directly from the ground.<\/p>\n<p>However, when they enter our atmosphere, their interactions with other molecules distribute their intense energy, breaking them into a shower of harmless, lower-energy particles. These can be detected using underground Cherenkov detectors like HAWC. Physicists can then reconstruct the gamm<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a ray that produced the shower, and even figure out where in the sky it came from.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HAWC is particularly sensitive to teraelectronvolt energies, and it has made several breakthrough detections, including the first detection of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/scientists-detect-highest-energy-light-ever-seen-from-the-sun\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TeV gamma rays from the Sun<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_141393\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-141393\" style=\"width: 642px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/images\/2024\/10\/radio-arc.jpg\" alt=\"Something in The Galactic Center Is Spitting Out Powerful Gamma-Rays Right at Us\" width=\"642\" height=\"361\" class=\"size-full wp-image-141393\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/images\/2024\/10\/radio-arc.jpg 642w, https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/images\/2024\/10\/radio-arc-600x337.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 642px) 100vw, 642px\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-141393\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The galactic center Radio Arc. Heywood\/SARAO<\/a>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A team led by physicist Sohyoun Yu C\u00e1rcaron of the University of Maryland found signs of PeVatrons in a wealth of HAWC data collected over 2,546 days. And, interestingly, 98 of those signals seem to have come from the same point source in the center of the Milky Way galaxy. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Named HAWC J1746-2856, the accelerator spits out the most powerful emission ever observed from the galactic center. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The team have yet to narrow down HAWC J1746-2856&#8217;s identity, with no known supernova remnants coinciding with the source&#8217;s location. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are two things in that vicinity that could be responsible for the emission \u2013 the supermassive black hole around which the galaxy revolves, Sagittarius A*; and a known, but unidentified gamma-ray emitter called HESS J1746-285, near a galactic feature known as the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apod.nasa.gov\/apod\/ap230403.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Radio Arc<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although the researchers were unable to discern the nature of the source, their findings confirm the existence of a PeVatron in the galactic center. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The results tell us a few other things, too.
