Nearly 50 years after the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/08\/30\/us\/washington-cold-case-killing-cigarette-dna\/index.html\">cold case murder<\/a> of a 19-year-old who went missing from her Illinois village, authorities have identified her killer through new DNA evidence.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2m9wz3j00063b6mbv7c62cr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In\u00a0March of 1979, Kathy Halle disappeared while heading to pick up her sister from a nearby shopping center in North Aurora, according to local authorities.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2m9wz3j00073b6m76bynxqs@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Police initially investigated the case as a missing person, but three weeks later, Halle\u2019s body was discovered in the Foxe River, Ryan Peat, a detective with the North Aurora Police Department, said during a news conference Wednesday.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2m9wz3j00083b6m4kh2r86t@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            After years of investigations, authorities determined there was not enough evidence to identify a suspect and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/09\/15\/us\/jimmie-wade-martin-missouri-murder-podcast-cec\/index.html\">the case went cold.<\/a>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2m9wz3j00093b6mw3yfmchk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It was not until 2020 that authorities revisited the case after linking DNA from Bruce Lindhal, a suspected serial killer who killed himself in 1981, to the murder of another woman named Pamela Maurer, Peat said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2m9wz3j000a3b6ml8clpb3u@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            North Aurora authorities used new forensic technologies to connect <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/08\/17\/us\/texas-cold-case-susan-wolfe\">DNA evidence<\/a> found on Halle\u2019s clothing to\u00a0Lindhal\u2019s DNA collected while solving Maurer\u2019s case.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2m9wz3j000c3b6mrxkhe3ys@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cLindhal has been connected to several other cases in this area from that timeframe,\u201d Peat said. \u201cWith this new evidence, along with the evidence from similar cases involving Lindhal, we are able to conclude Lindhal was responsible for death of Kathy Halle.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2m9wz3j000e3b6mmoxk3hco@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Authorities now believe Lindhal, who would often go to the shopping center where Halle worked, abducted the victim from<strong> <\/strong>the parking lot of her apartment complex and drove her to the area where her body was later discovered. <strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2m9wz3j000f3b6mt7jz07z7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWhile revisiting this case has been incredibly difficult, we are deeply grateful to finally have closure after 45 long years,\u201d a statement from Halle\u2019s family read during the news conference said. \u201cThanks to advancements in DNA technologies and groundbreaking tools, we are hopeful that other families won\u2019t have to endure the same pain and uncertainty that we faced for
