Other than points. Maybe wins and losses.<\/p>\n<p>But as for how they get those wins and points, we\u2019ve discussed a few seemingly obscure but key metrics this season: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/5774192\/2024\/09\/18\/sec-football-explosive-plays\/\">explosive play margin<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/5826230\/2024\/10\/08\/sec-football-yards-per-play-differential\/\">yards per play margin<\/a>. Let\u2019s add in another: sudden change margin.<\/p>\n<p>And yes, the word \u201cmargin\u201d is the theme here, because defense alone doesn\u2019t win championships anymore, nor does offense alone. Playing complementary football does, and margin captures that by comparing how teams do on offense (explosive plays and yards per play) and defense (teams\u2019 opponents explosive plays and YPP).<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s how sudden change margin came in: This week we checked in with TruMedia to see how explosive play margin was going in SEC games. (As a reminder, explosives are termed here as rushes of 12 or more yards and passes of 16 yards or more.) And just as before, the team that has more explosives than its opponent tends to win, especially the better the margin.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SEC teams with \u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span><strong>plus-5 explosive margin or better in that game:<\/strong> 34-4<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><strong>plus-1 to plus-4:<\/strong> 22-4<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><strong>even:<\/strong> 7-8<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><strong>minus-1 to minus-4:<\/strong> 7-12<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><strong>minus-5 or worse:<\/strong> 3-11\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>But within that there was a more telling tidbit: In SEC games where both teams were ranked, the team with the better explosive play margin went 6-0. There was a seventh such game, in which the teams were tied in explosives: <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"259\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/team\/georgia-bulldogs-college-football\/\">Georgia<\/a>\u2019s win over <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"182\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/team\/texas-longhorns-college-football\/\">Texas<\/a>. We know what else happened in that game, that Georgia\u2019s defense dominated, limiting Texas to just 3.4 yards per play. But Georgia\u2019s offense didn\u2019t exactly dominate, averaging only 3.9 ypp. So why was it a wire-to-wire 15-point win for the visitors?<\/p>\n<p>Red zone efficiency, an oft-cited metric, was negligible: Georgia converted on four of five trips, including three touchdowns and a field goal, while Texas got two touchdowns in three trips. Georgia was just in the red zone more \u2014 and the main reason for that was turnovers, which is where we get to sudden change.<\/p>\n<p>Georgia was plus-one in turnover margin (four to three), but what it did with those turnovers was more key. And what the Longhorns did not.<\/p>\n<p>Quarterback <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"KKEGxZ4LaH5PgA3k\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/player\/carson-beck-KKEGxZ4LaH5PgA3k\/\">Carson Beck<\/a> was picked off on two of Georgia\u2019s first three possessions, including once in his own territory. Texas scored zero points off those first two turnovers.<\/p>\n<p>But when Texas turned it over deep in its own territory, on <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"Wq97DPIFLAD4pV0f\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/player\/daylen-everette-Wq97DPIFLAD4pV0f\/\">Daylen Everette<\/a>\u2019s sack-strip, Georgia punched it in for the touchdown. When Everette picked off a pass in the second quarter, Georgia\u2019s offense again scored a touchdown. Then another sack-strip near the end of the half led to a Georgia field goal, making it 23-0 at halftime.<\/p>\n<p>Texas did get the third-quarter touchdown after Beck\u2019s third interception. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/5856014\/2024\/10\/19\/texas-georgia-pass-interfence-call\/\">That being the overturned pass interference.<\/a>) And Georgia only punted after the final Texas turnover, a fumble that came on fourth down. But the final margin in points off turnovers: 17-7 in Georgia\u2019s favor.<\/p>\n<p>Sudden change is the term coaches use. On offense, it measures how good you are at taking advantage of mistakes. On defense, it measures composure, and Georgia holding Texas to zero points on the first two turnovers \u2014 in fact forcing one after the second one \u2014 was the early turning point of the game.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"255\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/team\/south-carolina-gamecocks-college-football\/\">South Carolina<\/a> is another case study. The Gamecocks capitalized on early turnovers to rush out to a 21-0 lead at Oklahoma last week. But what most stands out about the Gamecocks is their defense\u2019s response this year, allowing only 19 points off 12 South Carolina turnovers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s huge. Obviously momentum is a real thing,\u201d South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer said. \u201cWe have a mantra around here of just putting the ball down. It doesn\u2019t matter what happened, defensively we\u2019ve got to go put the ball down and get a stop. So we emphasize taking the ball away. We emphasize protecting the football, like everybody does. And when you\u2019re able to get in a sudden change situation, good or bad, we want to be able to respond the right way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>South Carolina has the second-best sudden change margin in the SEC, behind only Vanderbilt. Per TruMedia, here are the leaders this season in sudden change margin. Notice how many of the surprise teams are on this list:<\/p>\n<p>A few other CFP contenders or surprise teams are close behind: <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"191\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/team\/ohio-state-buckeyes-college-football\/\">Ohio State<\/a> (plus-32), <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"251\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/team\/colorado-buffaloes-college-football\/\">Colorado<\/a> (plus-31), Texas (plus-28), <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"218\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/team\/army-black-knights-college-football\/\">Army<\/a> (plus-28), <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"267\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/team\/lsu-tigers-college-football\/\">LSU<\/a> and <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"257\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/team\/tennessee-volunteers-college-football\/\">Tennessee<\/a> (plus-27 each).<\/p>\n<p>But who is dead last nationally, 134th out of 134 teams? If you guess <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"166\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/team\/florida-state-seminoles-college-football\/\">Florida State<\/a>, congratulations: The Seminoles are minus-65.<\/p>\n<p>In between, there are a few anomalies: <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"176\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/team\/miami-hurricanes-college-football\/\">Miami<\/a> is minus-2, which ranks 76th nationally, yet unbeaten. <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"243\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/team\/oregon-ducks-college-football\/\">Oregon<\/a>, the top-ranked team in the country, is only plus-5. <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"193\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/team\/penn-state-nittany-lions-college-football\/\">Penn State<\/a>, yet another unbeaten, is only plus-8.<\/p>\n<p>Then there\u2019s Georgia, which may be able to credit its big win at Texas for sudden change margin, but for the season is plus-10, which helps explain some of its underwhelming wins. (In the loss to <a class=\"ath_autolink\" data-id=\"263\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/college-football\/team\/alabama-crimson-tide-college-football\/\">Alabama<\/a>, the Bulldogs were conference teams.
