It was forecast to make landfall along Odisha\u2019s coast overnight.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">A million residents in Odisha were being relocated to more than 5,000 camps that the government has set up, Suresh Pujari, Odisha\u2019s minister of revenue and disaster management, told reporters on Wednesday. The neighboring state of West Bengal has also evacuated residents, according to the local news media.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Dana has brought fears of widespread destruction to a region that was devastated by a much more powerful <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1999\/11\/14\/world\/troops-find-little-is-left-in-indian-area-hit-by-cyclone.html\" title=\"\">cyclone in 1999<\/a> that killed almost 10,000 people. Most of the deaths from that storm, which struck with Category 5 winds, were in Odisha, one of India\u2019s poorest states. Many in the state live in low-lying coastal areas in shacks made of mud and sticks.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But the state, which has a population of about 42 million, has since become <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/05\/03\/world\/asia\/cyclone-fani-india-evacuations.html\" title=\"\">better prepared<\/a>, setting up a disaster management agency, building shelters and preparing evacuation routes. Many of the preparations for Dana, including the swift evacuations, were informed by India\u2019s experience in 1999.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">On Thursday, India deployed its navy and other rescue teams for disaster relief. Warnings of possible cyclones and extremely heavy rainfall were also in place in the coastal areas of Odisha and West Bengal, with two to four inches of rain expected in those areas into Friday. Some places could get more than eight inches of rain, forecasters said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Flights were canceled, including at <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/AAI_Official\/status\/1849350574564606190\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Kolkata Airport<\/a> and at <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/aaibpiairport\/status\/1849139642756448737\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Biju Patnaik International Airport<\/a>, both of which said they were suspending operations for at least 15 hours overnight. Indian Railways canceled over 100 trains.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">School classes and exams in dozens of districts have been suspended in Odisha and West Bengal since Wednesday.
