Each of the militant groups Israel is concurrently fighting is backed by Iran. The indirectness was always by design: Despite being regional rivals, each <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/09\/25\/world\/middleeast\/iran-israel-hezbollah.html\" title=\"\">wanted to avoid<\/a> what was sure to be a costly, existential direct confrontation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Now, with Israel planning a retaliatory attack after Iran\u2019s ballistic missile barrage of unprecedented scale and scope on Oct. 1, a war seems more likely, alarming the international community and countries in the region.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Here is why a war is so concerning.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"css-15h6bi9 e1gnsphs0\" id=\"link-27cfd574\"><span>Israel and Iran have two of the region\u2019s most formidable militaries.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Israel has one of the world\u2019s most technologically advanced militaries and is among the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sipri.org\/sites\/default\/files\/2024-04\/2404_fs_milex_2023.pdf\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">top military spenders<\/a> globally as a share of gross domestic product. Israel\u2019s arms industry produces weapons at such a high capacity that last year it produced enough to <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/09\/27\/world\/middleeast\/israel-weapons-stockpiles.html\" title=\"\">export a record amount<\/a> despite its war in Gaza, according to researchers. Israel is also heavily backed by the United States, which has supplied more than 29,000 guided bombs, artillery rockets and assorted missiles since 2009.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Iran\u2019s armed forces are <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/04\/12\/world\/middleeast\/iran-israel-military-weapons.html\" title=\"\">among the largest in the Middle East,<\/a> with at least 580,000 active-duty personnel and about 200,000 reservists, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iiss.org\/en\/publications\/the-military-balance\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">according to an assessment<\/a> last year by the International Institute for Strategic Studies. Iran has made the development of precision and long-range missiles a priority for decades and has amassed one of the largest arsenals of ballistic missiles in the region.
