Officials reported that 991 homes were destroyed in the fire, making it the most destructive wildfire in Colorado history.\u00a0<br \/>\n        <span>(Photo by Michael Ciaglo\/Getty Images)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/extreme-weather\/california-wildfires-deadly-pollution-study\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>POLLUTION FROM CALIFORNIA WILDFIRES KILLED 52,000 IN A DECADE, STUDY SAYS<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Researchers analyzed data from more than 60,000 fires in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">U.S.<\/a> from 2001 to 2020 and found a 250% percent increase in the average maximum growth rate of the fastest wildfires.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">These &#8220;fast fires&#8221; accounted for 88% of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">homes<\/a> destroyed despite only representing a minimal percentage of the fires on record.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">According to the study, fires that damaged or destroyed more than 100 structures exhibited growth rates of more than 21,000 acres in a single day.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">&#8220;Fires have gotten faster in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/west\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">western<\/a> U.S. in just a couple of decades,&#8221; Balch stated. &#8220;We need to focus on what we can do to prepare communities: hardening homes and making robust evacuation plans.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">The results highlight a significant gap in wildfire risk models, which the experts contend do not take into account growth rate or other measures of a wildfire\u2019s forward progress.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">&#8220;When it comes to safeguarding <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/infrastructure\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">infrastructure<\/a> and orchestrating efficient evacuations, the speed of a fire\u2019s growth is arguably more critical than its sheer size,&#8221; the authors stated.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/extreme-weather\/lahaina-maui-hawaii-disaster-summary\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>FUTURE OF LAHAINA REMAINS UNCERTAIN ONE YEAR AFTER DEADLY HAWAII FIRES<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sgp.fas.org\/crs\/misc\/IF10244.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">According to a congressional research report<\/a>, an average of 61,410 wildfires burn approximately 7.2 million acres each year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">While most fires are caused by human activity, those ignited by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/lightning\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lightning<\/a> tend to be larger and cover more land.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">As of 2024, there have been 43,602 reported wildfires that have burned 7.9 million acres, according to data from the National Interagency Coordination Center.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Notably, about 14% of the total acreage burned can be attributed to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/extreme-weather\/smokehouse-creek-fire-texas-fully-contained\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Smokehouse Creek Fire<\/a>, which scorched 1.1 million acres across <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/texas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Texas<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/category\/oklahoma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Oklahoma<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Authorities determined that improperly functioning utility equipment was responsible for this significant blaze.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n     data-ad-layout-key=\"-fb+5w+4e-db+86\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"7910942971\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><br \/>\n<br \/><div data-type=\"_mgwidget\" data-widget-id=\"1660802\">\r\n<\/div>\r\n<script>(function(w,q){w[q]=w[q]||[];w[q].push([\"_mgc.load\"])})(window,\"_mgq\");\r\n<\/script>\r\n<br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/extreme-weather\/wildfires-western-us-growing-faster-more-damage-colorado-study\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hawaii is currently facing new fire threats.
