CCOR-1 is mounted on NOAA&#8217;s newest geostationary satellite, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spacex-falcon-heavy-goes-u-weather-satellite-launch\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spacex-falcon-heavy-goes-u-weather-satellite-launch\"><u>GOES-19<\/u><\/a>, which launched into orbit above Earth on June 25.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>CCOR-1 began its mission to observe the sun&#8217;s corona \u2014 the faint outermost layer of the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17160-sun-atmosphere.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17160-sun-atmosphere.html\">solar atmosphere<\/a> \u2014 on Sept. 19. The powerful solar telescope uses an occulting disk, visible as a dark blue circle in the images, to block the light from the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/58-the-sun-formation-facts-and-characteristics.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/58-the-sun-formation-facts-and-characteristics.html\"><u>sun<\/u><\/a>. Compared to ground-based instruments, space-based coronagraphs do not have to deal with <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17683-earth-atmosphere.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17683-earth-atmosphere.html\">Earth&#8217;s atmosphere<\/a>, which can scatter light and impact the clarity of observations. That means\u00a0CCOR-1 has an uninterrupted view of the sun&#8217;s corona.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"hawk-nest\" data-block-type=\"embed\" data-render-type=\"fte\" data-skip=\"dealsy\" data-widget-type=\"seasonal\"\/>\n<p>CCOR-1 is built to capture new images of the sun&#8217;s corona every 15 minutes, providing earlier warnings of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/coronal-mass-ejections-cme\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/coronal-mass-ejections-cme\"><u>coronal mass ejections<\/u><\/a> (CMEs) \u2014 large expulsions of plasma and magnetic fields hurled into space from the sun \u2014 that can trigger geomagnetic storms on Earth. While other space-based coronagraphs have been used in the past, NOAA says these previous instruments were used for scientific research while CCOR-1 &#8220;will be used operationally for regular, real-time activities and monitoring.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"see-more see-more--clipped\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet hawk-ignore\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">LASCO is technically a research instrument that was designed for experimental purposes. CCOR-1 will be used operationally for regular, real-time activities and monitoring. Granted, LASCO has been used operationally, but it is now being replaced by a modern, dedicated\u2026<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NOAASatellites\/status\/1848772371458757027\" data-url=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NOAASatellites\/status\/1848772371458757027\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"noopener\">October 22, 2024<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<p>Using the new instrument, CCOR-1 recently captured a CME outburst on Sept. 29. Video footage from the coronagraph shows a &#8220;clearly defined&#8221; CME emerging from the east limb (left side) of the sun at 8:15 a.m. EDT (1200 GMT), according to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nesdis.noaa.gov\/news\/noaa-shares-imagery-worlds-first-operational-space-based-coronagraph\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.nesdis.noaa.gov\/news\/noaa-shares-imagery-worlds-first-operational-space-based-coronagraph\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>a statement<\/u><\/a> from NOAA.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The sun also dazzles with its small and large streamers, bright radial structures along which the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/sun-solar-prominence-100000-miles-high-video\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/sun-solar-prominence-100000-miles-high-video\"><u>solar plasma<\/u><\/a> travels steadily outward,&#8221; NOAA officials said in the statement. &#8220;The CME explosions bend and sometimes disrupt the streaming plasma, buzzing past it at speeds of hundreds to thousands of miles per second.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div id=\"slice-container-newsletterForm-articleInbodyContent-S7jKT3tMuTF8zxVbmsVun4\" class=\"slice-container newsletter-inbodyContent-slice newsletterForm-articleInbodyContent-S7jKT3tMuTF8zxVbmsVun4 slice-container-newsletterForm\">\n<div data-hydrate=\"true\" class=\"newsletter-form__wrapper newsletter-form__wrapper--inbodyContent\">\n<div class=\"newsletter-form__container\">\n<section class=\"newsletter-form__top-bar\"\/>\n<section class=\"newsletter-form__main-section\">\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Breaking space news, the latest updates on rocket launches, skywatching events and more!<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Luckily, this CME was directed away from our planet. When a solar storm is directed toward <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\"><u>Earth<\/u><\/a>, it can disrupt the planet&#8217;s magnetic field, leading to power outages, radio and communication blackouts and pose greater risk to astronauts on the space station. Improved monitoring of the sun&#8217;s corona will therefore enable scientists to better predict the impacts of CMEs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The GOES-19 satellite <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spacex-falcon-heavy-goes-u-weather-satellite-launch\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spacex-falcon-heavy-goes-u-weather-satellite-launch\">launched on June 25, 2024<\/a> atop a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket. It was the 10th launch of SpaceX&#8217;s heavy-lift vehicle.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>GOES-19 is still undergoing post-launch testing to ensure its instruments and systems are operating as expected.
