The shooting <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/MayorGinther\/status\/1357126046970224647?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sparked outrage<\/a> in the Ohio community.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2gjx4ao000r3b6m9x6ysxw8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Police had been called to the area because a neighbor asked them to investigate someone \u2013 Hill \u2013 who\u2019d been waiting in a vehicle in the dark of night, prosecutors said. Hill actually was waiting on the acquaintance \u2013 a resident of that neighborhood \u2013 who\u2019d asked to meet him, according to prosecutors.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2gjx4ao000s3b6m99f1y72o@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A grand jury indicted Coy in 2021, and he was charged with murder in the commission of a felony, felonious assault and reckless homicide. Coy has pleaded <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/02\/05\/us\/andre-hill-adam-coy-arraignment\/index.html\">not guilty<\/a> to the charges.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2n9fzob0000356mttg820gu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The shooting happened after Coy ordered Hill, who eventually walked from his vehicle to his acquaintance\u2019s garage, to come out, Amlin said during Thursday\u2019s opening statements. Hill, holding an illuminated cell phone in his left hand, approached Coy, body camera footage <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2020\/12\/28\/us\/andre-hill-adam-coy-fired\/index.html\">shows<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2nos7z1000a356m21pzrcon@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Coy yelled, \u201cGun!\u201d before fatally shooting Hill, but \u201cevidence will show that \u2026 Hill was not armed\u201d and no firearm was found at the scene, Amlin said Thursday.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2nikwzt0005356mrsmrriab@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            An attorney defending Coy, however, said Coy mistakenly believed Hill was armed with a gun. Coy saw a glint of steel and believed he was going to get shot, defense attorney Kaitlyn Stephens said. The glint of steel turned out to be a mass of metal keys, she said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2nkr81s0000356mqlrhfcw2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Despite this error, police officers \u201care allowed to be mistaken,\u201d Stephens said. \u201cEven though there was no weapon found, his action to respond with deadly force was consistent with national police procedures.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2nmff9l000d356m4pnribmw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Coy \u201cwas justified when he made the decision to use deadly force because \u2026 he had a subjective belief that he was in immediate fear of great bodily harm or death,\u201d Stephens said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2nlxfx00005356m3wdymuvi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe evidence will show that Adam Coy did what he was trained to do on December 22, 2022 \u2013 not shoot with heedless indifference, but trained to shoot to stop the threat,\u201d Stephens\u00a0said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2gjx4ao000v3b6m2jtfys9n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The city of Columbus agreed in May 2021 to pay a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/05\/14\/us\/andre-hill-shooting-columbus-family-settlement\/index.html\">$10 million settlement<\/a> to Hill\u2019s family, marking the highest amount the city has ever agreed to pay in such a case.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2gjx4ao000w3b6mzzfvm9md@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The trial, which began Monday with jury selection in Franklin County, had been postponed indefinitely in April 2023 while Coy underwent cancer treatment, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dispatch.com\/story\/news\/courts\/2024\/10\/18\/columbus-police-officer-adam-coy-shooting-death-andre-hill-ohio\/75500260007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Columbus Dispatch reported.<\/a>\n    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm2gjx86r000z3b6mucftnw0q@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"shooting-captured-on-body-camera-footage\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n        Shooting captured on body camera footage<br \/>\n<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2gge9ib00003b6mtv23rkg6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Coy went to a Columbus neighborhood in the early morning of December 22, 2020, after a resident asked police to investigate someone who was sitting in SUV near that resident\u2019s home \u201cperiodically turning the vehicle on and off,\u201d Amlin told jurors Thursday.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2nm4tat0008356m3ok7qey4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The person in the SUV was Hill, who was intermittently turning the vehicle\u2019s engine on to stay warm while he waited for his acquaintance, who lived in a home on that street, Amlin said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2gjxky400123b6m0ap7lgox@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            After arriving in the neighborhood, Coy had a brief conversation with Hill while Hill remained in the SUV, and Hill said he was waiting for someone, Amlin said. Coy said that was fine, and returned to his cruiser to wait for Hill to leave, the assistant prosecutor said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2nmvpdv000i356mlkws7il0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Around then, a second officer, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2020\/12\/31\/us\/andre-hill-shooting-columbus-mayor\/index.html\">Amy Detweiler<\/a>, arrived and spoke to Coy, and the two decided they should approach Hill, who had just entered the garage of the acquaintance he was waiting on, Amlin said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2nmyy59000l356meqppmapj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Coy walked toward the garage and ordered Hill to come out, Amlin said. Hill began to comply, moving along a white car that was parked in that garage, Amlin said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2nmqtrk000f356mcarel642@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The body camera footage recorded with the look-back feature shows Hill walking from an opened garage toward Coy with his left hand holding an illuminated phone. He didn\u2019t do anything.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2gjylws001c3b6mut225p8s@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Detweiler said she heard Coy saying that he<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2020\/12\/29\/us\/andre-hill-adam-coy-shooting-columbus\/index.html\"> saw a gun<\/a> and that Coy yelled, \u201cThere\u2019s a gun in his other hand, there\u2019s a gun in his other hand!\u201d according to a report prepared by the Columbus police chief.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2gj3nmh000n3b6mznnxprbu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Hill died later that morning at a hospital. No weapon was found at the scene.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2gjxky400173b6m4ovd5vzo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Attorney Benjamin Crump, representing Hill\u2019s family, said Hill was visiting a family friend at the time of the shooting and was left \u201cstruggling for life for five minutes and 11 seconds.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2gjxky500183b6m70ah1lln@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Columbus Mayor Andrew J.
