Amazon\u2019s newest savings benefit could alleviate some of that potential grief for its over 184 million Prime subscribers.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2nmlicf000j3b6ml5v2ji04@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The fuel discount offering is Prime\u2019s latest addition to its laundry list of member benefits, which span music and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/01\/29\/media\/prime-video-ads\/index.html\">video streaming services<\/a>, food and grocery delivery, and even medical care and prescription drug savings. And in a world where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/08\/12\/business\/disney-costco-netflix-password-sharing-nightcap\/index.html\">membership programs now seem practically ubiquitous<\/a>, the move represents Amazon\u2019s efforts to stay ahead of the game.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2nmlicf000l3b6mmb7sete1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Fuel and energy probably isn\u2019t the first sector to come to mind when you think of Amazon, but analysts say that the recent inclusion of gas savings doesn\u2019t come as too much of a surprise.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2nmlicf000m3b6mvxyyf5yl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cAmazon\u2019s view has always been that the more benefits you add and the more rounded you make the program, the more difficult it is to leave,\u201d said Neil Saunders, retail analyst and managing director at GlobalData Retail.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2nmlicf000n3b6mvcphrmn0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Saunders told CNN that Amazon\u2019s move into gasoline likely stems from a keenness to compete with its rival, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/08\/22\/business\/walmart-perk-discounted-burger-king\/index.html\">Walmart+<\/a>, which offers similar 10-cent fuel savings at 14,000 U.S. stations.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2nmlicf000o3b6mgge6tr62@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And as more paid membership schemes like Target Circle 360 and Wayfair\u2019s recently announced Wayfair Rewards program enter the market, Prime is going the extra mile to demonstrate its value to subscribers.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2nmlicf000p3b6mml97zetq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cOther retailers are still playing catch up to Amazon, and Amazon wants to retain its lead,\u201d Saunders said. \u201cSo, as the other retailers run faster to add more bells and whistles, Amazon is doing the same thing to keep its position ahead of the pack.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2nmlicf000q3b6mx5xy5amm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Still, Amazon\u2019s attempt to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/07\/28\/tech\/amazon-antitrust-house-bills-issues\/index.html\">position itself as the \u201ceverything company\u201d<\/a> comes with its own set of challenges.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2nmlicf000r3b6mpzucrq8n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For one, there is<strong> <\/strong>customer confusion. According to Saunders, the larger the program, the more diffused it becomes.<strong> <\/strong>Customers who take advantage of one<strong> <\/strong>benefit might not find any use for another.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2nmlicf000s3b6m3y0o0v4s@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Pricing is another issue. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/02\/03\/tech\/amazon-earnings-q4-2021\/index.html\">An annual Prime subscription costs $139<\/a> \u2014 that\u2019s around 40% higher than Walmart and Target memberships, which are priced at $98 and $99, respectively.
