But as uttered at the start of <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/romeoandjulietnyc.com\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">the play\u2019s 36th Broadway revival<\/a>, which opened Thursday at Circle in the Square, the words are certainly more welcoming to the production\u2019s youthful target audience than the traditional iambic pentameter ones: \u201cTwo households, both alike in dignity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Not that there are two households in the director Sam Gold\u2019s rec-room adaptation anyway. Romeo\u2019s parents, along with a clutch of other characters, have been discarded. Juliet\u2019s are both played by one actor, with little more than a change of inflection. And though <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/09\/11\/theater\/kit-connor-rachel-zegler-romeo-juliet-broadway.html\" title=\"\">Kit Connor and Rachel Zegler, the box-office draws,<\/a> cover just one star-crossed lover each \u2014 he a beagly Romeo, she a beamish Juliet \u2014 the other eight cast members take on 17 roles, adorably if often indistinguishably. It\u2019s a puppy pile.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But before you wonder whether this production was sponsored by CliffsNotes, with only as much poetry and staying power as an Instagram story, bear in mind that many of the characters are teenagers, and that the play may most usefully be directed at people seeing it for the first time, not the 36th. Certainly Gold has used everything in his formidable toolbox \u2014 scissors, hammers, punches, wrenches \u2014 to get young people interested in a world that looks more like theirs than Elizabethan London or Renaissance Verona.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">So after an energetic preshow, filled with flirting, peacocking and snits of aggression, the story begins with that casual greeting from Gabby Beans, the play\u2019s Chorus. Beans, later a hotheaded Mercutio, a beneficent Friar Lawrence and a barely there Prince Escalus, makes a relatable hype woman, introducing the rest of the cast by first name and telling us whom they\u2019ll be playing.
