skull of a teen from the 1800s was found more than 45 years ago during a home renovation project in suburban Chicago \u2013 thanks to the advancement of DNA technology, we finally know her name.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2nwargu00033b6m0k8sycyl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Esther Granger was identified by the Kane County Coroner\u2019s Office on Thursday as the woman whose skull was found in 1978, but she died more than 150 years earlier.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2nwargv00043b6m4sid3jdi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Granger was born in October 1848 in Indiana and was only 17 at the time of her death in 1866, when officials believe she died due to complications during childbirth, Kane County Coroner Robert Russell said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/chicago\/news\/batavia-skull-identified-esther-granger\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news conference<\/a> Thursday.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2nwargv00053b6mri8h2zfw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Her body was buried in Merrillville, Indiana, but years later, her skull was found in a home about 80 miles northwest in Batavia, Illinois, a suburb west of Chicago.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2nwargv00063b6mmlyzkr6z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In 1978, a Batavia resident was renovating his home when he discovered the skull in the walls, Russell explained.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2nwargv00073b6m66d43kvi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The resident contacted the police and the official investigation into the case began.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2nwargv00083b6maokz1idm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Officials did what they could with DNA testing at the time, but all they were able to learn was the skull belonged to a young woman, likely in her 20s, who lived before the 1900s.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2nwjbiw00123b6mqdd8txch@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The case eventually grew cold.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2nwargv00093b6mmeftgez8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The skull was stored at the Batavia Depot Museum and employees stumbled upon it again in March 2021 while cleaning, Russell said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2nwargv000a3b6mi8b5p57p@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The skull was turned back into the police and officials linked this skull to the 1978 report, which renewed the investigation.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2ny9ois00003b6mj2zwbgd2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Advancements in forensic science technology and the use of forensic investigative genetic genealogy, which combines DNA analysis with traditional genealogy research, have allowed more breakthroughs with DNA evidence collection.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2nwargv000b3b6m73tkfslf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In 2023, Kane County officials contacted <a href=\"https:\/\/othram.com\/mission.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Othram<\/a>, a Texas company that works on solving cold cases across the country, to assist with further DNA testing.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2nwargv000c3b6m9j17kzdw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Othram officials built a DNA profile for the woman, which included a family tree, and located her living relatives.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2nwargv000d3b6mzw17ehez@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Officials contacted Granger\u2019s great-great grandson, Wayne Svilar, and he submitted his DNA for testing, which was a match, he said during Thursday\u2019s news conference.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2nwargv000e3b6mgaqarsaa@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Svilar, 69, said he did not believe the news when he was first contacted by county officials in April about his great-great grandmother.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2nwargv000f3b6mq3j6lpij@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cTo be completely honest, we didn\u2019t believe a word of it,\u201d he said. \u201cIt took two or three phone calls for me to believe it.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2nwargv000g3b6m0lkb212e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Svilar, who is a retired police sergeant from Portland, Oregon, says there was a sense of shock and closure among the family with the identification news.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2nwargv000h3b6mzxde8vi3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            He added he\u2019s been retired for awhile, but after being involved in the identification process, he\u2019s recently taken a job with the Multnomah County District Attorney\u2019s Office working with cold cases.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2nwgm1h000p3b6ms4btdz4b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            As for how Granger\u2019s skull ended up 80 miles from her burial site, officials aren\u2019t exactly sure, but they believe she was a victim of grave robbing.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2nwgyvy000u3b6m63nu7mub@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThere is no absolute answer as to how Esther ended up in that wall or where the rest of her body is located, but being a victim of grave robbing does fit the bill,\u201d Russell said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2nwhtan000x3b6mc5s57cwy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Officials also believe it is possible the grave robbers could have sold her remains to be used as a cadaver to study medicine.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2nx5t6a00003b6mog9n3xaj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Granger\u2019s remains were reburied at the West Batavia Cemetery.\n
