It\u2019s a phenonmenon that affects roughly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colorado.edu\/today\/2024\/02\/29\/space-travel-comes-motion-sickness-these-engineers-want-help#:~:text=As%20a%20result%2C%20roughly%2060,few%20days%20or%20even%20longer.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">60% to 80% of people<\/a> who travel to orbit, though astronauts rarely openly discuss the ailment.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2nmbp1y00093b6m0zt02eg3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt can be a whole spectrum of experience from lightheadedness, nausea, all the way to vomiting,\u201d Menon said. \u201cI experienced really the whole gamut.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2nmbp1y000a3b6mrqwp1csq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Traveling to space \u2014 with its jarring <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npl.co.uk\/resources\/q-a\/are-g-forces-caused-by-gravity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">g-forces<\/a> and disorienting weightlessness \u2014 can have a variety of effects on the human body, ranging from the uncomfortable to the downright dangerous.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2nmbp1y000b3b6m4ghjxc47@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            NASA has long known about and studied these ailments, as the agency\u2019s astronauts have reported such symptoms for decades.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2nmbp1y000c3b6m8lmf46sn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But the Polaris Dawn mission \u2014 a five-day journey to orbit carried out by the private sector rather than NASA \u2014 sought to take that research further, hoping to unravel some of the most troublesome aspects of spaceflight.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2nmbp1y000d3b6mn7y3x0bo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            During the mission, the crew carried out a variety of health-focused experiments, including wearing special contact lenses that measured the pressure in their eyes and undergoing MRI scans to track changes to the anatomy of their brains.\n    <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/image\/instances\/cm2o1rplf00033b6mcikrfvx7@published\" class=\"image image__hide-placeholder\" Polaris Dawn team pursued those answers\u00a0because the mission aims to pave the way for more people to venture into space, noted Jared Isaacman, the billionaire founder of payment technology company Shift4. Isaacman helped fund and was commander of the unprecedented mission.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2nmbp1y000f3b6m343zvsge@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cSome 600 people have been to orbit in the last 60 years \u2014 more than half have gotten space adaptation syndrome,\u201d Isaacman said. \u201cAnd you\u2019re talking about (mostly government astronauts) \u2014 some of the most highly screened individuals. \u2026 That\u2019s just underscoring the importance of why we have to solve this, if we\u2019re going to<strong> <\/strong>put hundreds or thousands of people in space one day.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2nmbp1y000g3b6m6871vh64@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            SpaceX\u2019s founding goal is to fly the first humans to Mars and eventually establish a settlement there.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2nmbp1y000h3b6mhkre5rt2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIf you think of a future where there\u2019s thousands of people living in space and they eventually \u2014 after nine months\u2019 travel \u2014 you get to the surface of Mars, and a huge percentage (of people) have vision changes that make them unable to do their work, unable to read their procedures \u2014 that\u2019s a big problem,\u201d Menon said of why SpaceX hopes to find answers to pressing in-space medical conditions.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2nmbp1y000i3b6mec6vmc9z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            During the September mission, the Polaris Dawn crew conducted the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/09\/12\/science\/spacewalk-polaris-dawn-mission-spacex\/index.html\">first commercial spacewalk<\/a> as well as ventured into the lower band of Earth\u2019s Van Allen radiation belts, which are areas within Earth\u2019s magnetic field where pools of radiation from the sun lie trapped.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2nmbp1y000j3b6m4z5wf0yc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Initial reports from the Polaris Dawn crew did not necessarily reveal any specific health effects from radiation exposure, although Isaacman said he saw \u201csparkles or lights\u201d when he closed as eyes, just as other NASA<strong> <\/strong>astronauts who have ventured through high-radiation environments have <a href=\"https:\/\/ntrs.nasa.gov\/citations\/19720018401\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>. And you can then really better understand how that transition occurs over the course of time and especially that early time in space,\u201d she said. \u201cWe are really interested to see what the researchers come back with when they have the chance to look through all this data.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2nmbp1y000o3b6mfwf6xx1o@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Dr. Allison Hayman, a researcher and associate professor at the University of Colorado Boulder, which led the cyborg experiment, said in September that researchers had not yet received the mission data. She could not be immediately reached for comment this week.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2nn7pgd001s3b6mmua1jnbh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In all, the Polaris Dawn team carried out 36 experiments on behalf of <a href=\"https:\/\/polarisprogram.com\/science-research\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">31 partner institutions<\/a>, including universities and NASA.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2nmbp1y000p3b6m3hfg79hp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Back on Earth, Poteet reported that his vision quickly returned to normal.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2nmbp1z000q3b6mbfosqse0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And while he had unfortunate vision lapses during the journey, Poteet said he was pleased to report he did not experience any of the nausea typically associated with space adaptation syndrome, which he called \u201cfairly ironic.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2nmbp1z000r3b6mxdr11kwp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cPeople assume there\u2019s a correlation between motion sickness (on Earth) and space adaptation syndrome,\u201d he said. \u201cI have a tendency to get motion sickness in the back of an Uber.\u00a0\u2026 But\u00a0I\u00a0actually\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0experience those symptoms (in space).\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2nmbp1z000s3b6m3baflqli@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Menon noted she wasn\u2019t as lucky.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2nmbp1z000t3b6mj21mr1f9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt really gave me just a huge appreciation for how it can impact your ability to work and get things done, especially in those early adaptation days,\u201d Menon said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2nmbp1z000u3b6mfze5eq2t@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Before takeoff, Isaacman \u2014 the only crew member with previous space travel experience \u2014 told CNN that medication administered to treat space adaptation syndrome symptoms can put people to sleep for eight hours or so.\u00a0(He led a previous self-funded trip to orbit called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/09\/15\/tech\/spacex-inspiration-4-space-tourism-mission-launch-scn\/index.html\">Inspiration4<\/a> in 2021.)\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2nmbp1z000v3b6mxi2da5dq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Sarah Gillis, a lead SpaceX operations engineer who was a mission specialist aboard Polaris Dawn, also noted that crew members had their blood drawn before and after the mission to evaluate how their bodies processed drugs \u2014 such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.neoteryx.com\/microsampling-news\/neoteryx-provides-microsampling-devices-onboard-polaris-dawn-mission\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">acetaminophen (or Tylenol)<\/a> \u2014 Doing so allowed the team to collect data even faster than NASA has collected such scans on astronauts after returning from space, Menon said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2nmbp1z000y3b6mb57vaknj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cEven those MRI results show changes to the brain anatomy,\u201d she said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2nmbp1z000z3b6mgyn2kc4b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The changes have included brains shifting upward in astronauts\u2019 skulls, according to Dr. Donna Roberts, deputy chief scientist at the ISS National Laboratory who has spent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJMoa1705129\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">years researching<\/a> the affects of spaceflight on brain structure.
