In the early hours of May 18, a nurse called Kamal Bherwani from his son\u2019s phone and said Ethan was in a coma in a hospital.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2nojc3o000h3b6mspyix2a5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Surveillance footage from the casino documented his son\u2019s last moments of consciousness as he lay on the floor by the poker<strong> <\/strong>tables about 2 a.m. for several minutes without receiving any help.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2nojc3o000i3b6mz4efj6sg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Moments before he slumped over the table and collapsed to the floor, Ethan Bherwani had bought cocaine from a man in a casino restroom. He had no clue it was laced with fentanyl and slipped into a coma not long afterward, his father says.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2nojc3o000j3b6m5ftbfln3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Ethan was hospitalized for nine days and never woke up. He died in a Hartford hospital on May 27, 2021. The second revelation was that he tried to buy cocaine. Ethan had smoked marijuana in the past but had never given any indication he used cocaine, Bherwani says.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2nojc3o000p3b6mein62rjw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cHe was a recreational drug user when it came to marijuana, and I wasn\u2019t happy about it, and I tried to talk him out of it,\u201d Bherwani says. \u201cBut his argument was that it was legal. And as a parent, you have to respect your child\u2019s boundaries.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2nojc3o000q3b6mtva3fkh7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Fentanyl overdose is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.getsmartaboutdrugs.gov\/media\/dea-administrator-record-fentanyl-overdose-deaths\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">leading cause of death<\/a> for Americans ages 18 to 45. Last year a majority of the roughly 107,000 drug overdose deaths in the United States<strong> <\/strong>were a result of fentanyl, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/pressroom\/nchs_press_releases\/2024\/20240515.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to<\/a> the CDC\u2019s National Center for Health Statistics.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2nojc3o000s3b6mspvpurz5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Fentanyl is 50 times stronger than heroin and is so potent that one kilogram \u2014 or 2.2 pounds \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dea.gov\/resources\/facts-about-fentanyl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">is enough to kill 500,000 people<\/a>. Dealers can mix it with other drugs, including heroin and cocaine, making them more dangerous for users not expecting fentanyl.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2nojc3o000t3b6mcyq7yg5y@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Kamal Bherwani says that\u2019s what happened to his son. Tests showed he had fentanyl and cocaine in his system.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2nojc3o000u3b6my48p3eum@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Ironically, his father says Ethan may have survived if he\u2019d been a regular user of fentanyl.<strong\/>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2nojc3o000v3b6m1pnxo7ve@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThat was part of why he didn\u2019t recover \u2013 he was what we call \u2018opioid naive\u2019 and his body had zero tolerance to fentanyl, to any opioids,\u201d he says.\n    <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm2nol13900233b6mk89jqmny@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"their-family-has-struggled-with-grief-denial-anger-and-pain\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n        Their family has struggled with grief, denial, anger and pain<br \/>\n<\/h2>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2nojc3o000x3b6mmvmmjnin@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Ethan Bherwani lived with his father in Roslyn, New York, and had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fairchildsons.com\/obituaries\/Ethan-Kamal-Bherwani?obId=32642417\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">many talents<\/a>. He loved playing the saxophone, piano and the guitar. He was on a softball team and competed in billiards tournaments.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2nojc3o000y3b6myblrpkf3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            He was planning to go to law school after his graduation from Baruch College in New York City, where he majored in business journalism. It arrived in the mail while he was hospitalized.<strong\/>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2nojc3o00113b6my79rq3lq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Kamal Bherwani treasures Ethan\u2019s phone, which has given him glimpses into his son\u2019s mind. In one voice memo Ethan recorded a year before his death, he pondered the meaning of life.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2nojc3o00123b6mtfewt1mk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt was a long recording where he questions why are humans here? What\u2019s our purpose in the world,\u201d his father says. \u201cIt made me realize what a deep philosophical mind he had.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2nojc3o00133b6mefabqeru@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Ethan Bherwani\u2019s death plunged his parents and four siblings into profound grief mixed with anger, denial and pain.<strong\/>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2nojc3o00143b6mn7beiy95@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThen you have to sit with that pain and decide,\u201d Kamal Bherwani says. \u201cWhat are you going to do with it?\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2nojc3o00163b6mwh6m7cyw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            On June 7, 2021, the day his son was laid to rest, Kamal Bherwani started his foundation. He began brainstorming ways to reduce deaths from fentanyl poisoning and overdoses, including how to make naxalone, a medication that can reverse opioid overdoses,<strong> <\/strong>more available to the public. After a hearing in April, a judge concluded Santiago had knowingly distributed the narcotics that caused Ethan Bherwani\u2019s overdose.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2nojc3p001k3b6m6is6gnu9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Last month, the judge sentenced Santiago to eight years in prison.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2nojc3p001l3b6mss5qrir5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In surveillance video showing his son passed out on the casino floor, Santiago briefly glances at him before walking away, Bherwani says.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2nojc3p001m3b6mu0dlu0do@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Santiago had been banned from the Mohegan Sun and was not supposed to be there that night, according to court documents obtained by CNN.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2nojc3p001n3b6m20udes34@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Bherwani has filed a civil suit against the casino for wrongful death, a battle complicated by the property being on Mohegan tribal land, he says. If he wins the case or receives a settlement, he\u2019ll use the funds for his fight for awareness on fentanyl-related issues, he says.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2nojc3p001o3b6m204o2vjk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe juxtaposition between tribal and state law, and the limited right of appeal is really where the harm is for the general public that is mostly unaware that they are sacrificing these rights by stepping foot in a tribal casino,\u201d Bherwani says.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2nojc3p001p3b6m6g1k4bre@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It\u2019s unclear why Santiago was banned from the casino.
