Americans\u2019 expectations for inflation rates in the long run also edged lower this month.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2ot5z7600072e6bail0qhnb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThis month\u2019s increase was primarily due to modest improvements in buying conditions for durables, in part due to easing interest rates,\u201d Joanne Hsu, director of the university\u2019s Surveys of Consumers, said in a release.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2ot7veg000e2e6brvp8cx0o@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Federal Reserve last month cut interest rates for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/09\/18\/economy\/interest-rate-cut-decision\/index.html\">the first time in more than four years<\/a>, by a bold half point, in part thanks to inflation coming under control. Lower borrowing costs make it cheaper for American shoppers to buy durable goods such as appliances, cars and furniture, which are usually bought on credit.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2otpcxb000h2e6bjz2aq7z1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But sentiment isn\u2019t always a good predictor of actual spending behavior.
