Glenn Youngkin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVirginia will immediately petition the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals and, if necessary, the U.S. Supreme Court, for an emergency stay of the injunction,\u201d the Republican governor said in a statement.<\/p>\n<aside id=\"ad-backstage-wrap\" class=\"ad-wrap backstage\" aria-label=\"advertisement\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>Eligible voters in Virginia still have time to <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.npr.org\/voter-registration-2024-mail\/virginia.html\">register to vote in this fall\u2019s election<\/a>. In-person voter registration continues at voting sites through Election Day.<\/p>\n<p>The ruling marks the second time this month a federal court has temporarily blocked voter purging efforts by a Republican-led state for violating the <a href=\"https:\/\/uscode.house.gov\/view.xhtml?path=\/prelim@title52\/subtitle2\/chapter205&amp;edition=prelim\">National Voter Registration Act<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Passed in 1993, the federal law bans Virginia and most other states from systematically removing registered voters within the 90 days before a federal election. There is no evidence for that assertion.<\/p>\n<p>Documents that the court ordered the state to release show that Virginia\u2019s program has removed more than 1,600 registered voters from its rolls during the quiet period, Ryan Snow, an attorney with the Lawyers\u2019 Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, who is representing the groups challenging Virginia, said Wednesday during a call with reporters.<\/p>\n<aside id=\"ad-secondary-wrap\" class=\"ad-wrap secondary\" aria-label=\"advertisement\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>Last week, a federal judge <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2024\/10\/16\/nx-s1-5154148\/alabama-noncitizen-voter-purge-lawsuit\">blocked a similar program<\/a> led by Alabama Secretary of State Wes Allen, a Republican.
