{"id":118403,"date":"2024-10-26T01:36:46","date_gmt":"2024-10-25T18:36:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=118403"},"modified":"2024-10-26T01:36:46","modified_gmt":"2024-10-25T18:36:46","slug":"popular-abortion-drug-shows-surprising-potential-to-extend-life","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=118403","title":{"rendered":"Popular abortion drug shows surprising potential to extend life"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n     data-ad-layout-key=\"-fb+5w+4e-db+86\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"7910942971\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>New research from biologists at the University of Southern California (USC) Dornsife College of Letters, Arts, and Sciences reveals that mifepristone, a drug best known for its use for ending early pregnancies, might also extend lifespan.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The findings could pave the way for anti-aging treatments.<\/p>\n<p>Mifepristone, which is also used to treat Cushing\u2019s disease and certain cancers, has caught the attention of scientists exploring ways to promote longer, healthier lives.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-increasing-lifespan\">Increasing lifespan<\/h2>\n<p>In a study involving fruit flies, John Tower, a professor of biological sciences at USC Dornsife, compared the effects of mifepristone to rapamycin, a drug that has demonstrated the ability to increase the lifespan of various animals.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/19336934.2024.2419151\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The study<\/a>, published in the journal <em>Fly<\/em>, showed that both drugs independently extended the lifespan of fruit flies.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, combining the two drugs does not offer additional benefits and a slightly reduced lifespan, suggesting they act through the same biological pathway.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers focused on mitophagy to understand how mifepristone and rapamycin might extend lifespan.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mitophagy is like a cellular \u201ccleanup\u201d process in which damaged or dysfunctional mitochondria \u2014 the cell\u2019s energy producers \u2014 are broken down and recycled. Impaired mitophagy has been linked to aging and age-related diseases, while increased mitophagy is believed to be a factor in rapamycin\u2019s life-extending effects.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-first-of-its-kind-study\">First-of-its-kind study<\/h2>\n<p>For the first time, the researchers could noninvasively measure mitophagy in fruit flies. They found that mifepristone increased mitophagy to the same extent as rapamycin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe noninvasive in vivo mitophagy assay is novel, and our findings suggest that enhancing mitochondrial health could be central to how both drugs extend lifespan,\u201d Tower said.<\/p>\n<p>The fact that mifepristone \u2014 a drug already approved for various medical uses \u2014 can boost mitophagy points to its potential as an anti-aging treatment, added Tower, whose previous research has shown anti-aging benefits.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Because it is already approved, repurposing mifepristone for anti-aging clinical trials could be faster, potentially accelerating the development of new longevity therapies.<\/p>\n<p>Future research must determine whether the effects observed in fruit flies can be replicated in humans, said Tower.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>If so, mifepristone might provide a relatively accessible and safe way to reduce age-related cellular decline, paving the way for other therapies that enhance mitochondrial health to support longevity.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-mifepristone\">Mifepristone<\/h2>\n<p>Mifepristone is a drug that blocks a hormone called <a href=\"https:\/\/interestingengineering.com\/health\/metformin-could-postpone-aging-humans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"dofollow noopener\">progesterone<\/a> that is needed for a pregnancy to continue.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mifepristone, when used together with another medicine called misoprostol, is used to end a pregnancy through ten weeks gestation.<\/p>\n<p>The FDA first approved Mifeprex (mifepristone) in September 2000 for medical termination of pregnancy through seven weeks gestation, and this was extended to ten weeks gestation in 2016.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mifepristone is safe when used as indicated, directed, and consistent with the Mifepristone Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS) Program.<\/p>\n<p>Recently, scientists found that the widely available cheap diabetes drug <a href=\"https:\/\/interestingengineering.com\/health\/metformin-type-2-diabetes\" rel=\"dofollow\">Metformin<\/a> can also extend life.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>The drug has long been known to have effects beyond treating diabetes, leading researchers to study it against conditions such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, and aging.<\/p>\n<p>Data from worms, rodents, flies, and humans who have taken the diabetes drug suggest it may have anti-aging effects.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n     data-ad-layout-key=\"-fb+5w+4e-db+86\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"7910942971\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><br \/>\n<br \/><div data-type=\"_mgwidget\" data-widget-id=\"1660802\">\r\n<\/div>\r\n<script>(function(w,q){w[q]=w[q]||[];w[q].push([\"_mgc.load\"])})(window,\"_mgq\");\r\n<\/script>\r\n<br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/interestingengineering.com\/health\/abortion-drug-extend-lifespan-pregnancy\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>New research from biologists at the University of Southern California (USC) Dornsife College of Letters, Arts, and Sciences reveals that mifepristone, a drug best known for its use for ending &hellip;
