In the sky, tiny stars appeared one by one, aligning into constellations. <\/p>\n<p>Juan Carlos Hern\u00e1ndez used his weight to adjust a large telescope. \u201cAim for me, Rich!\u201d he yelled to his friend. Ricardo Soriano focused a green laser on a small patch of clouds, targeting <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" (AP Photo\/Ginnette Riquelme)<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/bsp-read-more><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/figure><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Hern\u00e1ndez and other amateur astronomers worked to certify Joya-La Barreta Ecological Park last year as the <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/darksky.org\/news\/parque-ecologico-joya-la-barreta-mexicos-first-urban-night-sky-place\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">first urban night sky space<\/a><\/span> in Latin America by DarkSky International, an organization working to educate the public about the harm of indiscriminate lighting. <\/p>\n<p>The park sitting at about 8,520 feet (2,600 meters) above sea level on the outskirts of Queretaro gives unobstructed access to the night sky. While over 200 dark sky places exist globally, Joya-La Barreta park is only one of 11 in areas that are considered urban. Its dark sky status is under constant threat, however, from increasing light pollution and urbanization. <\/p>\n<h2>Fading stars<\/h2>\n<p>Hern\u00e1ndez, who just turned 40, has advocated relentlessly for the night sky for more than 20 years. <\/p>\n<p>The president of Queretaro\u2019s Astronomical Society and one of the founders of the stargazing tourism agency Astronite, the aerospace engineer by day has been chasing dark areas to observe the stars since he can remember.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn 2014 you could see Omega (Centauri) sitting in the sky just above the city,\u201d he said of a constellation over 17,000 light years away. \u201cToday it\u2019s unimaginable.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"Enhancement\" data-align-center=\"\">\n<div class=\"Enhancement-item\">\n<div class=\"ImageEnhancement\">\n<figure class=\"Figure\">\n<p>    <a class=\"AnchorLink\" id=\"image-a30000\"\/><\/p>\n<picture data-crop=\"imgEn-medium-nocrop\"><source media=\"(min-width: 768px)\" As of 2016, more than <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/sciadv.1600377\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">80% of the world lived under light-polluted skies<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Studies in Mexico show that increased urbanization and the need for city lighting in relation to security issues have <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/revista.unaminternacional.unam.mx\/en\/nota\/3\/cielos-oscuros-su-importancia-y-la-necesidad-de-protegerlos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">caused more light contamination<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Fernando \u00c1vila Castro of the Institute of Astronomy at the National Autonomous University of Mexico said a good analogy to explain light pollution is noise pollution.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe constantly hear traffic noise from the street, but past a certain level that intensity becomes annoying, it doesn\u2019t let you rest,\u201d he said. \u201cThe same thing happens with light. Especially because all living beings have this internal clock, the circadian rhythm, which depends on the external values of light.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we go to sleep, we forget that an entire world remains active,\u201d Castro said. <\/p>\n<h2>Under the spotlight<\/h2>\n<p>The moon and stars are the light source guiding nocturnal activity for plants and animals \u2014 determining when animals emerge from hiding to find food, when plants reproduce and when certain animal species migrate. Artificial light has boomed since the industrial revolution in the 19th century, with efficient, affordable LEDs the latest type in wide use.<\/p>\n<div class=\"Enhancement\" data-align-center=\"\" data-video-orientation=\"landscape\">\n<div class=\"Enhancement-item\">\n<div class=\"VideoEnhancement\">\n<div class=\"VideoEnhancement-player-videoTitle\">\n<p>AP video by Mart\u00edn Silva Rey<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s also this whole part about the biodiversity,\u201d Analette Casazza, president of another Queretaro astronomy association, said while standing under the stars Saturday night. \u201cWe can hear the singing from all the animals that live here (in Joya-La Barreta). A lot of these pollinating animals, their activity is at night.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Joya-La Barreta park hosts 123 species of vertebrates. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe real challenge we have is to get citizens involved,\u201d said Mar\u00eda Guadalupe Espinosa de los Reyes Ayala, Queretaro\u2019s environment secretary. \u201cWhen people arrive at a place like this and realize how much it has to offer, they see the need to protect and conserve it.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Conservation challenge<\/h2>\n<p>Hern\u00e1ndez and other astronomy activists continue to fight to conserve the park\u2019s nocturnal conditions and pass state regulations to reduce light pollution. <\/p>\n<p>Hern\u00e1ndez is also fighting for the enforcement of Mexico\u2019s General Law of Ecological Balance, passed in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>The law provides general recommendations to minimize light pollution. It\u2019s been recognized in certain Mexican states like Sonora, Baja California and Hidalgo to protect observatories and professional astronomical observations. However in Queretaro, Hern\u00e1ndez submitted an amendment to the state congress in 2023 to apply the regulations, but hasn\u2019t had any luck.<\/p>\n<div class=\"Enhancement\" Increased light pollution levels or a lack of visitors to the park for astronomical activities can put their certification at risk. For Ricardo Soriano, another founder of Astronite, it\u2019s a constant cause for concern.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf contamination continues to grow and the government doesn\u2019t support us, and doesn\u2019t do more to see more beyond our certification, then we can lose it,\u201d Soriano said. \u201cWe\u2019ll have to leave Queretaro to try to find another park like this. He explained certain celestial bodies or helped focus a scope on Saturn\u2019s rings.
