It\u2019s not that there are no horses,\u201d he said. \u201cThere are some horses, but they\u2019re unusual. They\u2019re niche.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Musk\u2019s comments come after Tesla earlier this month announced its <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/videos\/watch\/elon-musk-unveils-tesla%E2%80%99s-cybercab%E2%80%94no-steering-wheel%2C-no-pedals%2C-%2430k-price-tag\/2ec5ac0a-cda9-48fa-868b-8d817e28e40d\" target=\"_self\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/videos\/watch\/elon-musk-unveils-tesla%E2%80%99s-cybercab%E2%80%94no-steering-wheel%2C-no-pedals%2C-%2430k-price-tag\/2ec5ac0a-cda9-48fa-868b-8d817e28e40d\" rel=\"noopener\">autonomous robotaxi, the Cybercab<\/a>, along with a self-driving Robovan for bigger groups. Some analysts <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/10\/15\/elon-musk-net-worth-tesla-cybercab-event\/\" target=\"_self\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/10\/15\/elon-musk-net-worth-tesla-cybercab-event\/\" rel=\"noopener\">criticized<\/a> the supposedly autonomous vehicles for running on a controlled, closed course during their unveiling. But Musk said Wednesday that the robotaxi was <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/10\/24\/elon-musk-tesla-robotaxi-service-already-testing-san-francisco-employees-autonomous-driving-earnings\/\" target=\"_self\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/10\/24\/elon-musk-tesla-robotaxi-service-already-testing-san-francisco-employees-autonomous-driving-earnings\/\" rel=\"noopener\">already being tested<\/a> by employees on San Francisco streets.<\/p>\n<p>Musk added during the call that he believes car companies that are not focusing on autonomous vehicles will pay the price in the future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of automotive companies or most automotive companies have not internalized this, which is surprising, because we\u2019ve been shouting this from the rooftops for such a long time, and it will accrue to their detriment in the future,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Musk promised that in the future all of Tesla\u2019s vehicles will be autonomous. Of the 7 million Tesla vehicles on the road, he said a \u201cvast majority\u201d are capable of being autonomous. Musk has previously said that with an upgrade to Tesla\u2019s FSD (Full Self-Driving) software, customers can \u201csoon\u201d look forward to a full year of driving <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/10\/04\/elon-musk-tesla-fsd-robotaxi-full-self-driving\/\" target=\"_self\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/10\/04\/elon-musk-tesla-fsd-robotaxi-full-self-driving\/\" rel=\"noopener\">without ever having to touch the steering wheel<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>He also took a shot at Waymo, which analysts have pointed to as an example of self-driving technology that is <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/10\/18\/waymo-self-driving-car-ai-foundation-models-expansion-new-cities\/\" target=\"_self\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/10\/18\/waymo-self-driving-car-ai-foundation-models-expansion-new-cities\/\" rel=\"noopener\">already on the roads<\/a> following Tesla\u2019s robotaxi announcement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re currently making on the order of 35,000 autonomous vehicles a week. Compare that to, say, Waymo\u2019s entire fleet is less than\u2014[they] have less than 1,000 cars,\u201d Musk said.<\/p>\n<p>During the call analysts also asked about the long-promised $25,000 EV that Tesla reportedly scrapped earlier this year. While Tesla said in its earnings report that \u201cmore affordable models\u201d will be launched in the first half of next year, Musk made it clear that a low-cost EV without autonomous capabilities would be a step backward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think having a regular $25,000 model is pointless,\u201d he said. \u201cIt would be silly.
