{"id":118419,"date":"2024-10-26T02:34:46","date_gmt":"2024-10-25T19:34:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=118419"},"modified":"2024-10-26T02:34:46","modified_gmt":"2024-10-25T19:34:46","slug":"judge-blocks-virginia-from-dropping-alleged-noncitizens-from-voter-rolls","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=118419","title":{"rendered":"Judge blocks Virginia from dropping alleged noncitizens from voter rolls"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n     data-ad-layout-key=\"-fb+5w+4e-db+86\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"7910942971\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"\">A federal judge on Friday granted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/2024-election\/justice-department-sues-virginia-voter-rolls-election-day-rcna175117\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a Department of Justice<\/a> request to block Virginia from systematically removing alleged noncitizens from the voter rolls this close to an election. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">U.S. District Judge Patricia Giles ordered the state to stop its program immediately and restore the voter registrations of more than 1,600 people who were removed in recent months within five days.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The decision comes 10 days before Election Day and as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/2024-elections\/virginia-results\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">early voting<\/a>, which the began in the state last month, is underway. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Virginia&#8217;s program \u201chas curtailed the right of eligible voters to cast their ballots in the same manner as other eligible voters,\u201d Giles said as she announced her ruling.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Ryan Snow, a lawyer for Lawyers\u2019 Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, which represented civil rights groups who sued the state, called the ruling &#8220;a big victory.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">&#8220;All of the eligible voters who were wrongfully purged from the voter rolls will now be able to cast their ballots,&#8221; Snow said. &#8220;No one should mess with a citizen\u2019s right to vote.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Lawyers who had obtained the full list of people flagged to be purged from voter rolls said that 18 American citizens were incorrectly removed, a lawyer for the civil rights groups said in court on Thursday. The Justice Department said in a previous filing that 43 people removed from rolls in Prince William County were likely U.S. citizens. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cHow many more are there?\u201d Judge Giles asked rhetorically Friday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Gov. Glenn Youngkin remained defiant in a statement reacting to the judge\u2019s ruling, saying \u201cVirginia will immediately petition the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals and, if necessary, the U.S. Supreme Court, for an emergency stay of the injunction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Later in the day, Virginia filed its appeal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Youngkin, a Republican, signed an executive order in August that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/latino\/virginia-governor-youngkin-voter-purge-noncitizens-errors-election-rcna167925\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mandated voter roll purges of alleged noncitizens<\/a>. Under the program, people are flagged for removal if they check a box on a Department of Motor Vehicles form indicating they are not a citizen or leave that section blank.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The groups that sued say the program is catching people who obtained driver licenses as green card holders and later became citizens, as well as others who simply filled out the form incorrectly. <\/p>\n<p class=\"\">States are barred from systematically removing people from voters rolls within 90 days of an election under the National Voter Registration Act.
