He was 84.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">His death was announced on <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DBjvWcHPbQB\/?igsh=anM4MmNzMDR6NG5q\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">his Instagram account<\/a>. No further information was provided.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In addition to providing explorative bass work, Mr. Lesh sang high harmonies for the band and provided the occasional lead vocal. He also co-wrote some of the band\u2019s most noteworthy songs, including ones that inspired adventurous jams, like <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=W-s0lFpflQw\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cSt. Stephen\u201d<\/a> and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=k182h4qYJok\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cDark Star,\u201d<\/a> as well as more conventional pieces, like <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=xosZDm01ffc\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cCumberland Blues,\u201d<\/a> <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=48eW3VL-95g\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cTruckin\u2019\u201d<\/a> and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=nxjvo4BRf-Y\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cBox of Rain.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Key to the dynamic of The Dead was the way Mr. Lesh used the bass to provide ever-shifting counterpoints to the dancing leads of the lead guitarist <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1995\/08\/10\/obituaries\/jerry-garcia-of-grateful-dead-icon-of-60-s-spirit-dies-at-53.html\" title=\"\">Jerry Garcia<\/a>, the curt riffs of the rhythm guitarist Bob Weir, the bold rhythms of the drummers Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann, and, in the band\u2019s first eight years, the warm organ work of <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/pigpen-mckernan-dead-at-27-46215\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Ron McKernan<\/a>, known as Pigpen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">A source of particular excitement was the relationship between Mr. Lesh\u2019s instrument and Mr. Garcia\u2019s. At times they mirrored each other. At other times they contrasted, in the process widening the music\u2019s melodic nuances while helping to create the kind of variety and tension that allowed the band to improvise at length without losing the listener.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Lesh\u2019s bass work could be thundering or tender, focused or abstract. On the Grateful Dead\u2019s studio albums, his lines held so much melody that one could listen to a song for his playing alone. At the same time, he shared his bandmates\u2019 love for unusual chord structures and uncommon time signatures.
