The <em>Journal<\/em> said that before he came onboard,\u00a0Boeing held discussions with Jeff Bezos\u2019s Blue Origin space company about taking over some NASA programs.<\/p>\n<p>A Boeing spokesperson told <em>Fortune<\/em> the company doesn\u2019t comment on market rumors or speculation. Blue Origin didn\u2019t immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>The news comes days after Boeing reported third-quarter results that showed a <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/10\/24\/boeing-workers-reject-new-deal\/\" target=\"_self\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/10\/24\/boeing-workers-reject-new-deal\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/10\/24\/boeing-workers-reject-new-deal\/\" rel=\"noopener\">$6 billion loss<\/a> as its commercial aircraft unit has been hobbled by a strike that continues to drag on, with workers rejecting the latest offer. <\/p>\n<p>In addition, <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/08\/07\/boeing-workers-jobs-not-qualified-door-plug-blew-off-alaska-airlines-jet\/\" target=\"_self\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/08\/07\/boeing-workers-jobs-not-qualified-door-plug-blew-off-alaska-airlines-jet\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/08\/07\/boeing-workers-jobs-not-qualified-door-plug-blew-off-alaska-airlines-jet\/\" rel=\"noopener\">mishaps on Boeing passenger jets<\/a> earlier this year have brought the company\u2019s production processes and work culture under increasing scrutiny, further weighing on its commercial division.<\/p>\n<p>During Ortberg\u2019s first earnings conference call as CEO on Wednesday, he vowed to make the company <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/10\/23\/boeing-ceo-kelly-ortberg-turnaround-plan-earnings\/\" target=\"_self\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/10\/23\/boeing-ceo-kelly-ortberg-turnaround-plan-earnings\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/10\/23\/boeing-ceo-kelly-ortberg-turnaround-plan-earnings\/\" rel=\"noopener\">iconic again<\/a>, but also suggested it will take a hard look at units outside its core commercial and defense businesses. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re better off doing less and doing it better than doing more and not doing it well,\u201d he told analysts. \u201cWhat do we want this company to look like five and 10 years from now? And do these things add value to the company or distract us?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Boeing\u2019s long space legacy includes the iconic Saturn V rocket that took astronauts to the moon during the Apollo program as well as the space shuttle. It\u2019s also the prime contractor for the space station.<\/p>\n<p>But its Starliner program suffered a major setback earlier this year, when a crewed test flight took two astronauts to the space station but left them stuck there due to glitches with the capsule.<\/p>\n<p>In August, <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/08\/24\/boeing-starliner-astronauts-nasa-return-mission-spacex-elon-musk-international-space-station\/\" target=\"_self\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/08\/24\/boeing-starliner-astronauts-nasa-return-mission-spacex-elon-musk-international-space-station\/\" rel=\"noopener\">NASA said it would bring the astronauts back to Earth on a SpaceX mission<\/a> in February 2025, pushing the astronauts\u2019 total time in space to eight months, if all goes according to plan.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/spacex\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/spacex\/\" rel=\"noopener\">SpaceX<\/a> has been ferrying astronauts to and from the space station for years as the other contractor under NASA\u2019s space taxi program. Elon Musk\u2019s company has also emerged as a top provider of launch services for the U.S. military, other governments, and companies around the world.<\/p>\n<p>SpaceX\u2019s latest triumph was a test flight of its giant Starship rocket that saw its <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/10\/13\/spacex-starship-launch-super-heavy-booster-landing-launch-pad\/\" target=\"_self\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/10\/13\/spacex-starship-launch-super-heavy-booster-landing-launch-pad\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/10\/13\/spacex-starship-launch-super-heavy-booster-landing-launch-pad\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Super Heavy booster land itself on a launch pad<\/a> earlier this month. <\/p>\n<p>By contrast, Boeing has been lagging on its Starliner space taxi as well as its Space Launch System rocket, which is being designed for deep-space missions.
