Kennedy International Airport on the July 4th weekend in Queens, New York City, U.S., July 2, 2022.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Andrew Kelly | Reuters<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p><span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/DAL\/\">Delta Air Lines<\/a><span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\"\/><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span> on Friday filed a lawsuit against <span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-2\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/CRWD\/\">CrowdStrike<\/a><span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\"\/><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span> in Georgia, accusing the security software vendor of breach of contract and negligence after an outage in July that brought down millions of computers and prompted 7,000 flight cancelations.<\/p>\n<p>Other airlines recovered more quickly than Atlanta-based Delta, which said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2024\/07\/19\/latest-live-updates-on-a-major-it-outage-spreading-worldwide.html\">the incident<\/a> reduced revenue by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2024\/08\/08\/delta-says-chaos-after-crowdstrike-outage-cost-it-380-million-in-revenue.html\">$380 million<\/a> and brought $170 million in costs. The flawed software update affected computers running Microsoft&#8217;s Windows operating system.<\/p>\n<p>Days after the outage, Delta <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2024\/07\/29\/delta-hires-david-boies-to-seek-damages-from-crowdstrike-microsoft-.html\">hired David Boies<\/a> of law firm Boies Schiller Flexner to seek damages from CrowdStrike and <span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-6\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/MSFT\/\">Microsoft<\/a><span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\"\/><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span>. Delta asked for damages to cover its losses, along with litigation costs and punitive damages.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;CrowdStrike caused a global catastrophe because it cut corners, took shortcuts, and circumvented the very testing and certification processes it advertised, for its own benefit and profit,&#8221; Delta said in its complaint. &#8220;If CrowdStrike had tested the Faulty Update on even one computer before deployment, the computer would have crashed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Delta had disabled automatic updates from CrowdStrike but this one reached its computers anyway, the airline said in the suit. Delta claimed that CrowdStrike&#8217;s Falcon software created and exploited an unauthorized door in Windows that the airline said it never would have allowed.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The havoc that was created deserves, in my opinion, to be fully compensated for,&#8221; Delta CEO Ed Bastian told CNBC in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2024\/10\/10\/delta-air-lines-dal-3q-2024-earnings.html\">interview<\/a> earlier this month.<\/p>\n<p>A CrowdStrike representative didn&#8217;t immediately respond to a request for comment. CEO George Kurtz has apologized for the incident, and the company has committed to changing its practices to prevent similar events.
