Nor in any future\u00a0presidential election,\u201d Post publisher Will Lewis said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/2024\/10\/25\/washington-post-endorsement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> statement.<\/a> \u201cWe are returning to our roots of not endorsing presidential candidates.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2p0dexq002w3d5vwizdtux6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Post <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/style\/media\/2024\/10\/25\/washington-post-endorsement-president\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported the decision<\/a> not to endorse was made by the newspaper\u2019s billionaire owner, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, citing two sources briefed on the matter.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2ozud2x002l3d5vp7h7p2ku@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Post\u2019s editorial page staffers had drafted an endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris and it was ready to be approved by its board, but the draft was never presented, a person with knowledge of the matter told CNN.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2p07ld3002o3d5v6kaz39ix@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cMany on the editorial board are surprised and angry,\u201d the person said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2ox5v0p000c3d5vwolttmmy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Post has endorsed a presidential candidate in every election since the 1980s. In his statement,\u00a0Lewis referred to the Editorial Board\u2019s past decisions to not endorse a candidate, noting that it is a right \u201cwe are going back to.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2oxio0l000h3d5vj4t7bmlw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe recognize that this will be read in a range of ways, including as a tacit endorsement of one candidate, or as a condemnation of another, or as an abdication of responsibility. That is inevitable,\u201d Lewis continued. \u201cWe don\u2019t see it that way. We see it as consistent with the values The Post has always stood for and what we hope for in a leader: character and courage in service to the American ethic, veneration for the rule of law, and respect for human freedom in all its aspects.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2p0t4on002z3d5vmoskupej@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Newspaper owners typically play a role in their publication\u2019s endorsements and sign off on the editorials, which are seen as a reflection of their views.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2p0b5f8002t3d5vfxn9xhgm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            One journalist at the Post told CNN that the Harris campaign did not engage with the editorial board as part of the endorsement process. Another Post source said\u00a0the paper had sought to meet with both campaigns but did not meet with either candidate. A spokesperson for the newspaper did not comment.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2p5gmvt000l3d5v1fukn0c9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Ahead of Friday\u2019s announcement, the Post\u2019s editorial page editor, David Shipley, told staffers that Lewis would be publishing a public note with the decision.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2oxme5r000u3d5v8wlk6jzb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe news is significant &#8211; and I know there will be strong reactions across the department,\u201d Shipley wrote in a memo.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2p2cr81004p3d5vaf3ct26o@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Robert Kagan, an editor-at-large at the Post, told CNN he had resigned from the newspaper over Bezos\u2019s decision to block the endorsement. The move was also quickly denounced by Marty Baron, the Post\u2019s former executive editor who led the newspaper through its coverage of the January 6, 2021, attack.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2oy8vsw001i3d5vue2hf024@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThis is cowardice, with democracy as its casualty. Donald Trump will see this as an invitation to further intimidate owner Bezos (and others),\u201d Baron wrote in a <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/PostBaron\/status\/1849847940761657353\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social media post<\/a>. \u201cDisturbing spinelessness at an institution famed for courage.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2p08bb4002r3d5v6ep7zjw2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Under Baron, the paper went on to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/media\/2022\/05\/09\/washington-post-wins-pulitzer-prize-jan-6-coverage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">win a Pulitzer Prize<\/a> for public service for its coverage of the assault on the US Capitol, which it described as an \u201cattempted coup.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2oy9ikz001m3d5vfmu9173e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            During Trump\u2019s presidency, he famously feuded with Bezos, especially when it came to the e-commerce giant Amazon. Trump called the Post \u201cThe Fake News Washington Post\u201d and derided it as Amazon\u2019s \u201cchief lobbyist.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2oyrzji001v3d5vb0tw9uje@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Trump directly accused Amazon of not paying enough in taxes and taking advantage of the US Postal Service. The Trump administration <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2020\/01\/13\/tech\/amazon-jedi-military-contract-microsoft\/index.html\">also blocked<\/a> Amazon\u2019s $10 billion cloud computing contract with the Pentagon, which was widely seen at the time as Trump seeking retribution against Bezos over the Post\u2019s reporting.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2oz160y00253d5v53ssij5i@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It was Bezos, Baron wrote in his book \u201cCollision of Power,\u201d who ultimately helped decide on the Post\u2019s \u201cDemocracy Dies in Darkness\u201d slogan that was adopted during the Trump era.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2patcv3000l3d5v6nofllb1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But Trump has vowed to weaponize the government and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/12\/07\/media\/trump-threatens-retribution-against-press\/index.html\">seek vengeance <\/a>against his perceived enemies and critics if he is reelected in November. Hours after the Post announced its decision Friday, Trump greeted executives from Blue Origin, the space exploration company owned by Bezos, the <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/live\/2024-election-trump-harris-news-updates#00000192-c592-d7d8-a7be-efbf2ca80000\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Associated Press reported.<\/a> The company has a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/news-release\/nasa-selects-blue-origin-as-second-artemis-lunar-lander-provider\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$3.4 billion contract<\/a> with the federal government to build a new spacecraft to scuttle astronauts to and from the moon\u2019s surface.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2p1uzyp00483d5v327edgu8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In Washington, Bezos\u2019s decision not to endorse in the 2024 race left some members of the Post\u2019s editorial department feeling blindsided and disgusted, multiple sources told CNN. \u201cWe are furious,\u201d one writer said, indicating that staffers were considering signing an open letter denouncing the decision.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2p0zzsn003e3d5vpqa8mocf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Another person invoked the Post\u2019s slogan and said, \u201cDemocracy doesn\u2019t die in darkness, it dies when people anticipatorily consent to a fascist\u2019s whims.\u201d Other Post staffers publicly expressed their dismay.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2p14y6w003q3d5vodpw89iu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe paper I\u2019ve loved working at for 47 years is dying in darkness,\u201d David Maraniss, a Pulitzer Prize-winning editor, wrote in a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/maranissdavid\/status\/1849871015964242413\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social media post<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2p1240n003i3d5vuzoq0s36@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Another Washington Post journalist, speaking on condition of anonymity, told CNN they had mixed feelings about the decision.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2ozh2qc002f3d5vc6k9chp3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI\u2019m glad the Post isn\u2019t going to endorse anymore. But, what an awful time and way to roll that out,\u201d the person said.\u00a0\u201cIf you\u2019ve read the Post for the last few years and all the facts the news side has uncovered, I\u2019m not sure you need the editorial board to tell you what to do.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2ox52nq00083d5vukrdom3b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The decision comes just days after The Los Angeles Times owner Patrick Soon-Shiong <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/10\/23\/media\/los-angeles-times-endorsement-harris-resign\">blocked the newspaper\u2019s<\/a> planned endorsement of Harris, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/10\/25\/media\/los-angeles-times-editors-resign-harris-endorsement\/index.html\">leading to resignations<\/a> from three editorial board members.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2ozfuw1002c3d5vcqdap7my@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Major US newspaper chains have also scaled back on presidential endorsements in recent years. McClatchy and Alden Global Capital, which owns hundreds of newspapers across the country, have ended the practice.
