They found that cicadas in the early <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/29231-cretaceous-period.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/29231-cretaceous-period.html\"><u>Cretaceous<\/u><\/a> may have become 39% faster \u2014 and had 19% more flight muscle mass \u2014 than their ancestors in the late <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/28739-jurassic-period.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/28739-jurassic-period.html\"><u>Jurassic<\/u><\/a>, 60 million years before.<\/p>\n<p>The research suggests predation by birds drove this rapid development in an evolutionary &#8220;air race,&#8221; culminating in cicadas that more closely resembled modern species.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, the research aimed to shed light on the evolution of wings. Wings have evolved independently four times: in insects, flying reptiles called <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/24071-pterodactyl-pteranodon-flying-dinosaurs.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/24071-pterodactyl-pteranodon-flying-dinosaurs.html\"><u>pterosaurs<\/u><\/a>, birds and other <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/50662-bizarre-bat-dinosaur-photos.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/50662-bizarre-bat-dinosaur-photos.html\"><u>dinosaurs with wings<\/u><\/a>, and bats. But the evolution of these traits is hard to study. Wings often don&#8217;t fossilize well, and &#8220;to calculate the flight ability of extinct insects is really challenging,&#8221; <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/profile\/Xu-Chunpeng-2\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/profile\/Xu-Chunpeng-2\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>Chunpeng Xu<\/u><\/a>, a paleontologist at the Chinese Academy of Sciences&#8217; Nanjing Institute of Geology and Paleontology and lead author of the study, told Live Science in an email.<\/p>\n<p>But ancient giant cicadas offer a solution. There are over 80 well-documented giant cicada species in the fossil record over the late Mesozoic. They concluded that the giant cicadas&#8217; body and wing shape evolved to help them become faster and more efficient flyers. Adv. 10, eadr2201 (2024))<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The work is &#8220;very, very cool,&#8221; <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/profile\/Michael-Habib-6\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/profile\/Michael-Habib-6\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>Michael Habib<\/u><\/a>, a paleobiologist at UCLA who was not affiliated with the study, told Live Science.
