{"id":118613,"date":"2024-10-26T14:53:56","date_gmt":"2024-10-26T07:53:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=118613"},"modified":"2024-10-26T14:53:56","modified_gmt":"2024-10-26T07:53:56","slug":"what-happened-this-week-in-richard-allens-trial","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=118613","title":{"rendered":"What happened this week in Richard Allen&#8217;s trial?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n     data-ad-layout-key=\"-fb+5w+4e-db+86\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"7910942971\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"\">Five years before <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/indiana-police-make-announcement-unsolved-2017-delphi-murders-2-teenag-rcna54767\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">he was charged with killing two middle school students<\/a> near an Indiana trail, Richard Allen reached out to authorities about the double murder: He\u2019d been in the area the day the girls were killed, he told an investigator at the time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">That information, contained in a \u201clead sheet\u201d maintained by law enforcement, was inadvertently marked clear, and it wasn\u2019t until 2022 when a volunteer clerk tasked with helping organize thousands of tips in the investigation discovered it and set into motion the events that led to Allen\u2019s arrest.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The revelation emerged in a Carroll County courtroom this week, where law enforcement officers, witnesses and others detailed their involvement in the case during the first full week of testimony about the Feb. 13, 2017, killings of Liberty German, 14, and Abigail Williams, 13.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"styles_inlineImage__yAWZ0 styles_medium__OMa6x\"><picture class=\"styles_image__1qciH\" data-testid=\"picture\"><source media=\"(min-width: 1000px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media-cldnry.s-nbcnews.com\/image\/upload\/t_fit-560w,f_avif,q_auto:eco,dpr_2\/rockcms\/2024-10\/241016-libby-german-abigail-williams-WMAQ-snip-ac-538p-4b6931.jpg 2x, https:\/\/media-cldnry.s-nbcnews.com\/image\/upload\/t_fit-560w,f_auto,q_auto:best\/rockcms\/2024-10\/241016-libby-german-abigail-williams-WMAQ-snip-ac-538p-4b6931.jpg 1x\"\/><source media=\"(min-width: 320px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media-cldnry.s-nbcnews.com\/image\/upload\/t_fit-760w,f_avif,q_auto:eco,dpr_2\/rockcms\/2024-10\/241016-libby-german-abigail-williams-WMAQ-snip-ac-538p-4b6931.jpg 2x, https:\/\/media-cldnry.s-nbcnews.com\/image\/upload\/t_fit-760w,f_auto,q_auto:best\/rockcms\/2024-10\/241016-libby-german-abigail-williams-WMAQ-snip-ac-538p-4b6931.jpg 1x\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/media-cldnry.s-nbcnews.com\/image\/upload\/t_fit-760w,f_auto,q_auto:best\/rockcms\/2024-10\/241016-libby-german-abigail-williams-WMAQ-snip-ac-538p-4b6931.jpg\" alt=\"delphi indiana murder victims abigail williams liberty libby german\" height=\"1000\" width=\"1500\"\/><\/picture><figcaption class=\"caption styles_caption__Pe5JC\" data-testid=\"caption\"><span class=\"caption__container\" data-testid=\"caption__container\">Liberty German and Abigail Williams. <\/span><span class=\"caption__source\" data-testid=\"caption__source\">NBC Chicago<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"\">Lawyers for Allen, a 52-year-old former CVS employee, have said he is \u201ctruly innocent.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">In court filings, Allen&#8217;s legal team has said the killings could have been part of a ritual sacrifice, and at trial, they\u2019ve challenged the prosecution\u2019s timeline as well as accounts from witnesses that, in one instance, placed a man \u201ccovered in mud and blood\u201d near the area where the teens\u2019 bodies were found.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">At trial Thursday, defense lawyer Andrew Baldwin asked the clerk, Kathy Shank, if his client was trying to &#8220;assist&#8221; the investigation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The prosecution objected, calling the question &#8220;speculation,&#8221; and the judge sustained, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wthr.com\/article\/news\/crime\/delphi-girls-murdered\/delphi-murders-trial-day-6-richard-allen-prosecution-state-defense-case-libby-german-abby-williams-carroll-county-indiana\/531-422a2ea9-6825-4e94-b330-0497bebc0b3c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NBC affiliate WTHR of Indianapolis reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The investigator who spoke with Allen in 2017 was Dan Dulin, then a conservation officer with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. He testified Thursday that he helped local authorities follow up on leads related to the killings.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<section class=\"embed-widget embedWidget embed-widget--medium\" data-testid=\"embed-widget\"\/>\n<p class=\"\">On Feb. 16, 2017 \u2014 three days after the homicides \u2014 Dulin said he picked up a lead sheet with Allen\u2019s name and phone number. The officer asked to meet Allen at his home, but he declined, Dulin said, and requested that they meet at a grocery store parking lot instead.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">During the unrecorded conversation that followed, Dulin testified, Allen told him he parked at a Farm Bureau lot and walked toward  an abandoned rail bridge \u2014 it&#8217;s now part of the Delphi Historic Trails network \u2014 where the teens had planned on spending their day off from school.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Allen was there between 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m., Dulin recalled him saying, and he passed three girls along the way.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">After roughly 10 minutes, Dulin said, the conversation was over. Dulin typed up his notes and submitted the file to investigators, he testified.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Five years later, Shank, a retired receptionist for the Department of Children\u2019s Services who volunteered with the investigation, was sorting through thousands of leads when she came across a file box containing a tip with the name \u201cRichard Allen Whiteman.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The tip incorrectly identified Allen\u2019s last name, Shank testified, and it was marked \u201ccleared.\u201d But in September 2022, Shank flagged it to a detective who testified that investigators had been trying to find a man who witnesses reported seeing on the trail that day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The detective, Tony Liggett, now Carroll County Sheriff, said he believed that man was someone who\u2019d become known to investigators as \u201cthe bridge guy.\u201d The phrase <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/delphi-double-murder-richard-allens-trial-set-open-cellphone-video-kin-rcna175143\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">referred to a mysterious Snapchat video<\/a> found on Abigail\u2019s phone that showed a white man wearing jeans and a dark jacket walking on the bridge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.in.gov\/isp\/crime-reporting\/delphi-homicide-investigation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">In a statement released after the killing that included a brief clip of the video<\/a>, authorities described the unidentified man as a suspect in the teens\u2019 homicide.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">One of the witnesses, Railly Voorhies, testified Tuesday that she said hello to a man who was overdressed for the weather, with a hat, a mask and dark clothes. He didn\u2019t respond when she waved, said Voorhes, then a 16-year-old high school student who was friends with the victims, and he \u201cdid not seem like a happy person.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Once she saw the Snapchat image, Voorhies testified, she said she realized that was the same man she\u2019d waived to.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">A defense lawyer for Allen, Jennifer Auger, noted that Voorhies\u2019 initial description to police of the man on the trail \u2014 a man in his 20s or 30s with curly hair and a square jaw \u2014 was different than the one she provided in court.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Asked if the \u201cbridge guy\u201d image could have influenced her memory, Voorhies responded: \u201cPossibly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Liggett testified that he believed the witnesses who described seeing Allen on Feb. 13 were credible. And he said the information Allen provided to authorities days later was marked as cleared when it shouldn\u2019t have been.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Allen \u201cgot lost in the cracks,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">After Shanks provided Liggett with the lead sheet, investigators returned to Allen and interviewed him again. Allen provided a similar account, according to former Delphi Police Chief Steve Mullin, who conducted the interview, though Allen said he\u2019d arrived at the trail at noon and left at 1:30 p.m.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">When Mullin showed Allen a photo of the \u201cbridge guy,\u201d the former chief testified, Allen responded: \u201cIf the picture was taken with the girl\u2019s camera, there was no way it could be him,\u201d Mullin testified.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Authorities then served a search warrant on Allen\u2019s home and found a .40 caliber Sig Sauer handgun that prosecutors have said matches a bullet found near the girls\u2019 bodies.
