(<a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2024-10-smallest-dinosaur-egg-china.html\">China University of Geosciences<\/a>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Within them, geoscientist Rui Wu from the China University of Geosciences and colleagues found enough tiny clues to confirm what they were looking at was not a direct bird relative but a non-avian theropod dinosaur instead.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>This included details of the eggs&#8217; microstructures as well as what are likely limb bones within, allowing Wu and team to place the newly identified species, <em>Minioolithus ganzhouensis<\/em>, in its family tree.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>Minioolithus ganzhouensis<\/em> is the smallest known dinosaur egg clutch till now and is significant for understanding the diversity of theropods in the Late Cretaceous,&#8221; the researchers <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1080\/08912963.2024.2409873\">write in their paper<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_141325\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-141325\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/images\/2024\/10\/JinguoMicroEllipsoidEggPreviousSmallestDinoEgg.jpg\" alt=\"Two ochre and white egg shaped fossils\" width=\"500\" height=\"229\" class=\"wp-image-141325 size-full\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-141325\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The previous smallest dinosaur eggs of <em>Parvoblongoolithus jinguoensis<\/em>, found in 2014. (<a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2014-05-dinosaur-egg-avian-upper-cretaceous.html\">ZHANG Shukang<\/a>)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>While the eggs are shaped like familiar bird eggs, <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.zool.2007.11.005\">all known bird eggs<\/a> from the Cretaceous through to today <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2014-05-dinosaur-egg-avian-upper-cretaceous.html\">have three shell layers<\/a>. The Ganzhou mini eggshell has two layers, like other non-avian  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/dinosaurs\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73069\" data-postid=\"141323\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">dinosaurs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>The shell&#8217;s thinness, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wiktionary.org\/wiki\/angusticanaliculate\">type of pore system<\/a>, and subtle worm-segment-like pattern on the eggs suggest <em>M. ganzhouensis<\/em>  is related to the Ovaloolithus group.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>However, the shell&#8217;s abundance of tiny fluid sacs makes the Ganzhou Mini Eggs distinct from other known ovaloolithus eggs, revealing the newly analyzed clutch belongs to another species within the group.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>Ovaloolithus eggs are tentatively thought to belong to herbivorous triceratops ancestors based on the limb anatomy of other finds.
