But it appears \u201cthe Atherton,\u201d a stunning, sprawling <a href=\"https:\/\/www.compass.com\/listing\/88-tuscaloosa-avenue-atherton-ca-94027\/1673236063970097633\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.compass.com\/listing\/88-tuscaloosa-avenue-atherton-ca-94027\/1673236063970097633\/\" rel=\"noopener\">mansion<\/a>, mirrors the idyllic town it\u2019s named after.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The home sits on Tuscaloosa Avenue, atop a 1.42-acre lot. In Southern California, the ultrarich are <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/08\/11\/california-los-angeles-ultra-rich-digging-deep-iceberg-homes-mansions\/\" target=\"_self\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/08\/11\/california-los-angeles-ultra-rich-digging-deep-iceberg-homes-mansions\/\" rel=\"noopener\">digging deep<\/a> for it. \u201cLower levels,\u201d rather than basements, is how the wealthy prefer to refer to them, Ernie Carswell, a luxury real estate agent with Douglas Elliman, previously told me.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>They house billiard rooms, wine caves, bowling alleys, movie theaters, gyms, and spas\u2014not too different from the posh home we\u2019re talking about.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Those sorts of \u201ciceberg homes\u201d were a thing in London, too, long before now. Maybe the people of California are inspired by architecture from beyond. A mansion built by a billionaire, or a \u201ccliffside Palace of Versailles,\u201d as the <em>Wall Street Journal<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/real-estate\/luxury-homes\/a-billionaire-built-a-cliffside-version-of-versailles-now-its-asking-108-million-848fbaaa?mod=real-estate_lead_story\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/real-estate\/luxury-homes\/a-billionaire-built-a-cliffside-version-of-versailles-now-its-asking-108-million-848fbaaa?mod=real-estate_lead_story\" rel=\"noopener\">called it<\/a>, recently went up for sale in San Diego, with a <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/10\/21\/luxury-real-estate-sand-castle-mansion-list-price-108-million-san-diego-la-jolla\/\" target=\"_self\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/10\/21\/luxury-real-estate-sand-castle-mansion-list-price-108-million-san-diego-la-jolla\/\" rel=\"noopener\">price tag<\/a> of $108 million.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For its part, the Atherton has been for sale for about 30 days and has had around six showings so far.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The seller is actually a developer; his firm did everything from the design to the build itself, which isn\u2019t typically how things are done. But it <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2023\/12\/16\/california-housing-crisis-policy-failure-threaten-rest-of-the-country\/\" target=\"_self\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2023\/12\/16\/california-housing-crisis-policy-failure-threaten-rest-of-the-country\/\" rel=\"noopener\">isn\u2019t easy to build<\/a> in California, let alone Atherton, where it\u2019s predominantly zoned for single-family homes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Atherton is actually home to a multimillionaire basketball star and a billionaire venture capitalist, among other elite, of course, who on two separate occasions <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2023\/02\/23\/atherton-steph-curry-marc-andreessen-housing-yimby-nimby\/\" target=\"_self\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2023\/02\/23\/atherton-steph-curry-marc-andreessen-housing-yimby-nimby\/\" rel=\"noopener\">opposed change<\/a> that was coming in the form of multifamily homes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So the seller who happens to be a developer had some challenges along the way. Maybe that\u2019s part of why it\u2019s priced so. But paying that price brings you into an affluent club, as Haze pointed out.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And it just so happens that supercar maker Ferrari is borrowing the house this weekend for an event for its top clientele to showcase some hot rides.
