Now an AI neural network has identified something unusual about a face in a Raphael painting: It wasn&#8217;t actually painted by Raphael.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>The face in question belongs to St Joseph, seen in the top left of the painting known as the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Madonna_of_the_Rose_(Raphael)\"><em>Madonna della Rosa<\/em><\/a> (or <em>Madonna of the Rose<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>Scholars have in fact long debated whether or not the painting is a Raphael original. While it requires diverse evidence to conclude an artwork&#8217;s provenance, a newer method of analysis based on an AI algorithm has sided with those who think at least some of the strokes were at the hand of another artist.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>Researchers from the UK and US developed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/new-mind-reading-ai-translates-thoughts-directly-from-brainwaves-without-implants\">custom analysis algorithm<\/a> based on the works that we know are the result of the Italian master&#8217;s brushwork.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_115271\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-115271\" style=\"width: 642px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/images\/2023\/12\/FullPainting.jpg\" alt=\"Madonna della Rosa\" width=\"642\" height=\"806\" class=\"wp-image-115271 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/images\/2023\/12\/FullPainting.jpg 642w, https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/images\/2023\/12\/FullPainting-331x415.jpg 331w, https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/images\/2023\/12\/FullPainting-600x753.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 642px) 100vw, 642px\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-115271\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">One of these faces is not like the others. (Museo Nacional del Prado)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;Using deep feature analysis, we used pictures of authenticated Raphael paintings to train the computer to recognize his style to a very detailed degree, from the brushstrokes, the color palette, the shading and every aspect of the work,&#8221; mathematician and computer scientist Hassan Ugail from the University of Bradford in the UK <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nottingham.ac.uk\/news\/madonna-della-rosa\">explained<\/a> in December, when the researchers&#8217; findings were published.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The computer sees far more deeply than the human eye, to microscopic level.\u202f&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/artificial-intelligence\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73092\" data-postid=\"141694\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">Machine learning<\/a> processes typically need to be trained on a vast pool of examples, something which isn&#8217;t always available when it comes to a sole artist&#8217;s life work. In this case, the team modified pre-trained architecture developed by Microscoft called ResNet50, coupled with a traditional machine learning technique called a Support Vector Machine.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>The method has previously been shown to have a 98 percent accuracy level when it comes to identifying <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Raphael\">Raphael paintings<\/a>. Usually, it&#8217;s trained on whole pictures, but here the team also asked it to look at individual faces.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>While the Madonna, the Child, and St John all show up as being created from the hand of Raphael, that&#8217;s not the case of St Joseph. The researchers note that in <a href=\"https:\/\/totallyhistory.com\/madonna-of-the-rose\/\">previous debates<\/a> over the painting&#8217;s authenticity, St Joseph&#8217;s face has been thought to be less well done than the others in the frame.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_115273\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-115273\" style=\"width: 642px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/images\/2023\/12\/JosephNo.jpg\" alt=\"Joseph chart\" width=\"642\" height=\"252\" class=\"wp-image-115273 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/images\/2023\/12\/JosephNo.jpg 642w, https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/images\/2023\/12\/JosephNo-600x236.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 642px) 100vw, 642px\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-115273\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Someone else probably had a hand in the face of St Joseph. (Ugail et al., <a href=\"https:\/\/heritagesciencejournal.springeropen.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s40494-023-01094-0\"><em>Heritage Science<\/em><\/a>, 2023)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;When we tested the <em>della Rosa<\/em> as a whole, the results were not conclusive,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nottingham.ac.uk\/news\/madonna-della-rosa\">said<\/a> Ugail.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;So, then we tested the individual parts and while the rest of the picture was confirmed as Raphael, Joseph&#8217;s face came up as most likely not Raphael.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>Giulio Romano, one of Raphael&#8217;s pupils, may have been responsible for the fourth face, but that&#8217;s by no means certain. It&#8217;s another example of modern technology <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/the-mona-lisa-reveals-a-toxic-secret-hidden-inside-the-painting\">revealing the secrets<\/a> of classic paintings \u2013 this time with AI.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>The <em>Madonna della Rosa<\/em> was painted on canvas in the years 1518 to 1520, experts think.
