Earlier this month, <a href=\"https:\/\/futurism.com\/the-byte\/boeing-lay-off-17000-workers\" class=\"underline hover:text-the-byte hover:no-underline transition-all duration-200 ease-in-out\" style=\"text-decoration-color:#ff0033\"><em>Reuters<\/em> reported<\/a> that Boeing is set to fire ten percent of its workforce, amounting to a staggering 17,000 employees.<\/p>\n<p>And Starliner, its entry into NASA&#8217;s Commercial Crew program, hasn&#8217;t fared any better. The capsule left the International Space Station last month <a href=\"https:\/\/futurism.com\/the-byte\/starliner-new-problems-return-earth\" class=\"underline hover:text-the-byte hover:no-underline transition-all duration-200 ease-in-out\" style=\"text-decoration-color:#ff0033\">without any passengers on board<\/a> due to <a href=\"https:\/\/futurism.com\/the-byte\/boeing-starliner-stuck-space-station-more-leaks\" class=\"underline hover:text-the-byte hover:no-underline transition-all duration-200 ease-in-out\" style=\"text-decoration-color:#ff0033\">nagging technical issues<\/a> that NASA <a href=\"https:\/\/futurism.com\/the-byte\/nasa-dumps-boeing-starliner-spacex\" class=\"underline hover:text-the-byte hover:no-underline transition-all duration-200 ease-in-out\" style=\"text-decoration-color:#ff0033\">deemed too dangerous<\/a> for a crewed return.<\/p>\n<p>According to its latest filings with regulators, the company took another <a href=\"https:\/\/spacenews.com\/boeing-losses-on-starliner-increase-by-250-million\/\" class=\"underline hover:text-the-byte hover:no-underline transition-all duration-200 ease-in-out\" style=\"text-decoration-color:#ff0033\">massive $250 million loss<\/a> on its Starliner commercial crew program in its third fiscal year quarter, bringing the total losses of the spacecraft&#8217;s development to a stunning $1.85 billion.<\/p>\n<p>NASA also <a href=\"https:\/\/spacenews.com\/nasa-further-delays-first-operational-starliner-flight\/\" class=\"underline hover:text-the-byte hover:no-underline transition-all duration-200 ease-in-out\" style=\"text-decoration-color:#ff0033\">recently announced<\/a> that an upcoming crew rotation flight to the ISS would make use of SpaceX&#8217;s Crew Dragon instead of Starliner.<\/p>\n<p>Despite looking for a buyer for Starliner, Boeing is reportedly still committed to overseeing the development of NASA&#8217;s Space Launch System rocket, which is set to deliver the first astronauts to the surface of the Moon in over half a century no earlier than two years from now.<\/p>\n<p>Nonetheless, NASA&#8217;s inspector general <a href=\"https:\/\/futurism.com\/nasa-inspector-boeing-work-moon-rocket\" class=\"underline hover:text-the-byte hover:no-underline transition-all duration-200 ease-in-out\" style=\"text-decoration-color:#ff0033\">concluded in a damning August report<\/a> that Boeing&#8217;s contributions were woefully behind schedule and way over budget.<\/p>\n<p>In short, Boeing&#8217;s recently minted CEO Kelly Ortberg now has the seemingly impossible task of picking up the pieces \u2014 and ditching the parts of the business that are weighing down a company actively in crisis.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We\u2019re better off doing less and doing it better than doing more and not doing it well,&#8221; he told analysts during a call this week. &#8220;What do we want this company to look like five and ten years from now?
