Conversely, 56 percent of men backed former President Donald Trump, while 37 percent of women did. That\u2019s repeatedly been the case in national polls, too. For example, a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/elections\/2024\/10\/25\/harris-trump-poll-gender-gap\/75697863007\/\">poll from USA Today\/Suffolk University<\/a> found that Harris had a 16-point gap in the support that she saw from men and women. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1agbrixh lg8ac51 lg8ac50 xkp0cg0\">\u201cIt\u2019s the battle of the sexes, and it\u2019s no game,\u201d Quinnipiac pollster <a href=\"https:\/\/poll.qu.edu\/poll-release?releaseid=3915\">Tim Malloy said in a statement<\/a>. \u201cThere is a glaring gap in Michigan and Wisconsin between the number of women supporting Harris and the number of men supporting Trump.\u201d In Quinnipiac polls conducted in five of the seven key swing states throughout October, Harris had a significant lead among women, while Trump saw a comparable advantage among men in those same places. (Quinnipiac has not released October results for Nevada and Arizona.)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1agbrixh lg8ac51 lg8ac50 xkp0cg0\">Women supporting Democrats over Republicans isn\u2019t a new phenomenon: Members of the group have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/articles\/how-younger-voters-will-impact-elections-the-gender-gap\/\">more likely to support the party<\/a> than men since the 1980s, and this <a href=\"https:\/\/news.gallup.com\/poll\/609914\/women-become-liberal-men-mostly-stable.aspx\">political divide has only grown<\/a> over time. This time around, though, that split could have major implications for the election outcome due both to <a href=\"https:\/\/projects.fivethirtyeight.com\/polls\/president-general\/2024\/national\/\">how tight the race is<\/a>, and other demographic shifts. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1agbrixh lg8ac51 lg8ac50 xkp0cg0\">According to recent polls, Democrats seem to be losing support among groups they\u2019ve counted on in the past, like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/show\/trump-is-gaining-ground-with-some-black-men-heres-how-harris-can-change-their-minds\">Black men<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us\/trump-gains-with-hispanic-men-harris-up-with-white-women-reutersipsos-polls-show-2024-10-25\/\">Latino men<\/a>. Those losses could be made up by boosting turnout among women, particularly since <a href=\"https:\/\/cawp.rutgers.edu\/facts\/voters\/gender-differences-voter-turnout\">women are more likely to vote<\/a> than men<a href=\"https:\/\/cawp.rutgers.edu\/facts\/voters\/gender-differences-voter-turnout\">,<\/a> and historically do so in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iowapbs.org\/shows\/catt\/clip\/5320\/why-women-vote-higher-percentages\">larger numbers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1agbrixh lg8ac51 lg8ac50 xkp0cg0\">\u201cThe women\u2019s vote will be decisive this election,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brown.edu\/news\/2024-10-21\/election-day\">Katherine Tate, a Brown University political scientist<\/a>, said. \u201cIf Harris wins, it will be because women elected her.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p><h3 class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup\">The gender gap is a sign of the inroads Democrats have made over time<\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1agbrixh lg8ac51 lg8ac50 xkp0cg0\">Women have backed Democrats by a significant margin in multiple cycles now. In 2020, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/politics\/2021\/06\/30\/behind-bidens-2020-victory\/\">President Joe Biden won 55 percent of women voters<\/a>, while Trump won 44 percent, and in 2016, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/election\/2016\/results\/exit-polls\">former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton<\/a> won 54 percent of women voters, while Trump won 39 percent, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/politics\/2021\/06\/30\/behind-bidens-2020-victory\/\">according to Pew Research Center<\/a>. If the actual outcome approaches the figures that pollsters are seeing, Democrats could well maintain these margins.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1agbrixh lg8ac51 lg8ac50 xkp0cg0\">Part of Democrats\u2019 growth with women comes from ideological shifts: A higher proportion of <a href=\"https:\/\/news.gallup.com\/poll\/609914\/women-become-liberal-men-mostly-stable.aspx\">women across all age groups are now identifying as liberal<\/a>, compared to two decades ago, according to a Gallup survey published in February. And younger women between the ages of 18 to 29, especially, are one of the groups now far more likely to identify as liberal than they were in the past. Gallup found 40 percent of young women identified as liberal in 2023 compared to 29 percent in 1999. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1agbrixh lg8ac51 lg8ac50 xkp0cg0\">While the left is adding women, it\u2019s gaining few men, however. In that same 24-year timeframe, Gallup found the proportion of men who identify as liberal across age groups has stayed relatively unchanged: Just 25 percent of young men identified as liberal in 2023, only 1 percentage point more than in 1999. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1agbrixh lg8ac51 lg8ac50 xkp0cg0\">Women\u2019s leftward shift has been driven by a combination of factors, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/opinion\/columnist\/2024\/08\/14\/trump-sexist-vance-republican-misogyny-women\/74631430007\/\">opposition to misogynistic rhetoric from GOP leaders<\/a> and allegations of sexual misconduct faced by prominent political figures \u2014 like Trump, who\u2019s the subject of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/politics\/23696250\/e-jean-carroll-trump-trial-sexual-misconduct-rape-allegations\">more than 20 accusations of sexual assault and misconduct<\/a>, including a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2024\/oct\/23\/donald-trump-accuser-stacey-williams-jeffrey-epstein\">new allegation this week<\/a>. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1agbrixh lg8ac51 lg8ac50 xkp0cg0\">Social movements like the #MeToo movement raised awareness of sexual misconduct and harassment in 2017. And women became more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/2018\/10\/31\/17566066\/young-women-congress\">involved politically<\/a> in the wake of Trump\u2019s election, organizing via demonstrations like the Women\u2019s March and running for elected office in record numbers. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1agbrixh lg8ac51 lg8ac50 xkp0cg0\">Democrats\u2019 stances on social issues including reproductive rights, and the outrage over the Supreme Court decision overturning <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em> in 2022 have also resonated with some women. Trump was responsible for appointing the justices who led the overturn of <em>Roe<\/em>, and has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/donald-trump\/trump-was-able-kill-roe-v-wade-rcna84897\">bragged about his role<\/a> in doing so. Democrats, meanwhile, have fashioned themselves as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/politics\/24101209\/abortion-reproductive-freedom-biden-2024-election\">party dedicated to defending reproductive health care<\/a>. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1agbrixh lg8ac51 lg8ac50 xkp0cg0\">Since the 1980s, many women have increasingly viewed <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/5903399\/gender-gap-politics\/\">Democrats as operating in their economic interest<\/a> too, Roosevelt Institute historian Suzanne Kahn wrote for Time. That idea can be traced back to President Ronald Reagan\u2019s decision to cut social benefits like Social Security and welfare, a reduction that disproportionately harmed women, Kahn wrote. And it\u2019s since been solidified by efforts by Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton to pass laws addressing the gender wage gap and establishing family leave. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1agbrixh lg8ac51 lg8ac50 xkp0cg0\">\u201cWomen believe that they or their family may need government help or protection,\u201d Democratic pollster Celinda Lake says. \u201cMen think it\u2019s a good day when the government doesn\u2019t do anything bad to you.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1agbrixh lg8ac51 lg8ac50 xkp0cg0\">And Democrats have been able to take advantage of the power of representation as the party has diversified as well. The Democratic Party itself has become more representative of women in recent decades, and made a successful push for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/policy-and-politics\/2023\/1\/10\/23539585\/congress-diverse-republicans-house\">recruitment and promotion of women candidates<\/a>, something Republicans are still catching up to. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1agbrixh lg8ac51 lg8ac50 xkp0cg0\">In the House, for example, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.state.gov\/briefings-foreign-press-centers\/women-in-politics#:~:text=So%20if%20we%20look%20at,of%20the%20Democratic%20state%20delegation.\">43 percent of Democratic lawmakers are women<\/a>, while 15 percent of Republican lawmakers are women. The party\u2019s efforts have also led to two women at the top of Democrats\u2019 presidential ticket, including Harris, something many <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ap.org\/news-highlights\/spotlights\/2024\/its-our-time-as-harris-accepts-the-nomination-many-women-say-a-female-president-is-long-overdue\/\">Democratic voters have expressed excitement<\/a> about. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1agbrixh lg8ac51 lg8ac50 xkp0cg0\">Women\u2019s leftward shift has calcified into party affiliation with Democrats, Lake says, and that could have major consequences this election cycle. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1agbrixh lg8ac51 lg8ac50 xkp0cg0\">Currently, a number of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/features\/2024-10-23\/new-poll-has-trump-harris-tied-in-key-states-just-12-days-to-election?leadSource=uverify%20wall\">swing state polls are even<\/a> between the two presidential candidates \u2014 and boosting support with women could be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2024\/10\/20\/harris-abortion-gender-gap-00184483\">what pushes Harris over the top<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1agbrixh lg8ac51 lg8ac50 xkp0cg0\">\u201cIn close races the formula for victory is to win women by more than you lose men,\u201d Lake tells Vox.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"_1tzd3in0 _1agbrixx\">\n<p class=\"_1tzd3in1\">You\u2019ve read <!-- -->1<!-- --> article<!-- --> in the last month<\/p>\n<div class=\"_1tzd3in2\">\n<div class=\"_1tzd3in3\">\n<p class=\"_1tzd3in4\">Here at Vox, we believe in helping everyone understand our complicated world, so that we can all help to shape it.
