Meanwhile, <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/jpmorgan-chase\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/jpmorgan-chase\/\" rel=\"noopener\">JPMorgan Chase<\/a> CEO Dimon has reportedly <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/10\/23\/jamie-dimon-kamala-harris-administration\/\" target=\"_self\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/10\/23\/jamie-dimon-kamala-harris-administration\/\" rel=\"noopener\">considered a role<\/a> in Harris\u2019s administration, should she be elected president.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>But the magnates\u2019 quiet support for Harris doesn\u2019t mean they\u2019re willing to publicly criticize former President Donald Trump as he seeks to recapture the White House. Dimon and Gates have been notably silent in their critiques of the former president, even as Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/10\/24\/harris-trump-polls-us-presidential-election\/\" target=\"_self\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/10\/24\/harris-trump-polls-us-presidential-election\/\" rel=\"noopener\">ekes ahead<\/a> of Harris in polls only weeks before the election.<\/p>\n<p>Dimon and Gates join a gaggle of other high-profile executives\u2014including the <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/06\/26\/fortune-100-ceos-trump-small-businesses\/\" target=\"_self\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/06\/26\/fortune-100-ceos-trump-small-businesses\/\" rel=\"noopener\">vast majority of Fortune 100 CEOs<\/a>\u2014who have plenty of negative things to say about the former president, but only behind closed doors.<\/p>\n<p>Jeffrey Sonnenfeld, a Yale School of Management professor and president of the Chief Executive Leadership Institute, told<em> Fortune<\/em> that Dimon and Gates are keeping quiet in order to preserve power and authority, should they need to use it later.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey have to keep their powder dry,\u201d said Sonnenfeld, whose close relationships with American execs gave him the title of \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/som.yale.edu\/story\/2023\/business-insider-why-jeffrey-sonnenfeld-became-ceo-whisperer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/som.yale.edu\/story\/2023\/business-insider-why-jeffrey-sonnenfeld-became-ceo-whisperer\" rel=\"noopener\">CEO whisperer<\/a>.\u201d \u201cIf they speak out on every single issue and every twist and turn, then they don\u2019t have the force of their voice when they need it.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>An example of when business juggernauts did organize in a high-stakes political moment came days after the 2020 election. That\u2019s when more than two dozen CEOs <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/top-ceos-met-plan-response-to-trump-ae2790a11be9a73cd3216d17ce06e143\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/top-ceos-met-plan-response-to-trump-ae2790a11be9a73cd3216d17ce06e143\" rel=\"noopener\">met over Zoom<\/a> to respond to Trump\u2019s denial of the election results confirming Joe Biden as the next U.S. president. <\/p>\n<p>The Business Roundtable, which represents <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/walmart\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/walmart\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Walmart<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/apple\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/apple\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Apple<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/starbucks\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/starbucks\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Starbucks<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/general-electric\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/general-electric\/\" rel=\"noopener\">General Electric<\/a>, among other companies, released a statement congratulating Biden.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to preserving their political capital, another part of the strategy in not speaking out on Trump\u2019s 2024 campaign and platform is fear that their comments would be bad for business.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey don\u2019t antagonize Trump because\u2026they don\u2019t want to alienate customers and employees and investors who think differently about the elections if they don\u2019t have to,\u201d Sonnenfeld said. \u201cNo reason to stick a finger in the eye and antagonize parts of their own workforce, parts of their own customer base, parts of their own investor base.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Previous theories<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sonnenfeld\u2019s theory diverges from that of former <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/american-express\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/american-express\/\" rel=\"noopener\">American Express<\/a> CEO Ken Chenault, who posited CEOs\u2019 silence on Trump comes from worry of retaliation. Trump told Dr. Phil in June he would consider <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Politics\/trumps-conviction-intensifies-calls-retribution-term\/story?id=110927011\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Politics\/trumps-conviction-intensifies-calls-retribution-term\/story?id=110927011\" rel=\"noopener\">seeking revenge<\/a> on his political adversaries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe fear is real,\u201d Chenault <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/features\/2024-trump-interview\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/features\/2024-trump-interview\/\" rel=\"noopener\">told <em>Bloomberg<\/em><\/a> in July. \u201cPeople are staying on the sidelines because they greatly fear that there will be retribution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>JPMorgan Chase managing director of communications Joe Evangelisti told <em>Fortune, <\/em>\u201cWe are not fearing retaliation<em>. <\/em>We simply believe we can be more impactful speaking out on important policy issues rather than discussing politics and politicians, which can often be misrepresented or weaponized by the left or right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gates did not respond to <em>Fortune<\/em>\u2019s request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>The philosophy of JPMorgan Chase aligns with Sonnenfeld\u2019s hypothesis. The open secret of Dimon\u2019s and Gates\u2019s support of Harris\u2014which they\u2019re likely aware is now public knowledge\u2014is exactly why they\u2019re not concerned about retaliation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re not afraid of Trump,\u201d he said. \u201cTrump is already furious at them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>When and why CEOs speak up<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dimon and Gates keeping strategically quiet about their election views continues to evolve a centuries-long narrative about the relationship between business leaders and American politicians.<\/p>\n<p>Today, the general consensus among U.S. CEOs is that Trump\u2019s policies will not serve their businesses, according to Sonnenfeld. This is primarily because they don\u2019t believe in isolationism and rely heavily on global financial and technology systems, which is directly at odds with Trump\u2019s plank of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/10\/25\/business\/economy\/trump-economy-markets-trade.html\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/10\/25\/business\/economy\/trump-economy-markets-trade.html\" rel=\"noopener\">steep tariffs<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Sonnenfeld cited Harley-Davidson\u2019s decision to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-01-29\/harley-profit-wiped-out-by-tariffs-as-sales-continue-slumping\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-01-29\/harley-profit-wiped-out-by-tariffs-as-sales-continue-slumping\" rel=\"noopener\">shift some of its production<\/a> from the U.S. to a factory in Thailand in 2019 in order to side step taxes imposed by the European Union in retaliation for Trump\u2019s hiked tariffs on steel and aluminum.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[CEOs] are horrified by Trump\u2019s ridiculous claims that tariffs are a source of revenue,\u201d Sonnenfeld said.<\/p>\n<p>Trump did not respond to <em>Fortune<\/em>\u2019s request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>Executives\u2019 overwhelming sentiments against Trump break from the tradition of Union Leagues <a href=\"https:\/\/member.unionleague.org\/history\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/member.unionleague.org\/history\" rel=\"noopener\">formed in the mid-1800s<\/a> as a way for business leaders to support Republican Abraham Lincoln. The practice of executives vocally supporting Republican presidents continued until 2016, when CEOs\u2019 optimism on a pro-business Trump presidency <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/6111845\/woke-big-business-dumps-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/time.com\/6111845\/woke-big-business-dumps-trump\/\" rel=\"noopener\">quickly soured<\/a>. With the <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/10\/24\/elon-musk-donald-trump-election-tesla-robotaxi-cybercab-earnings-doge\/\" target=\"_self\" class=\"sc-93594058-0 fowfrQ  \" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/10\/24\/elon-musk-donald-trump-election-tesla-robotaxi-cybercab-earnings-doge\/\" rel=\"noopener\">exception of Elon Musk<\/a> and some tech moguls, Sonnenfeld said, few CEOs are willing to fervently back Trump.<\/p>\n<p>But Trump\u2019s many CEO dissenters are also unlikely to make headlines.
