It seems to be a pile of evidence,\u201d said Nancy Erika Smith, an attorney in New Jersey who represented former <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/2016\/jul\/07\/gretchen-carlson-roger-ailes-fox-news-lawsuit-other-women\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Fox News anchor Gretchen Carlson<\/a> in a sexual harassment lawsuit against the network\u2019s late chief Roger Ailes and a woman who said she was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2023\/11\/30\/trump-golf-club-worker-sexually-harassment-lawsuit-00129307\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">sexually harassed<\/a> and coerced into sex by a supervisor at a Trump golf club.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">\u201cThere are many women who witnessed their own experiences and will testify about that, but they also witnessed the abuse of other women in the same parties or orgies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">Combs, a rapper whose success also included launching a record label and clothing line, faced a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbclosangeles.com\/news\/local\/diddys-former-personal-chef-settles-work-claims-suit\/3343\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">sexual harassment lawsuit<\/a> in 2017, which was later settled. The public started paying more attention to his alleged predatory behavior in November 2023 when Combs\u2019s ex-girlfriend, Casandra Ventura, filed a lawsuit alleging that he beat her, raped her and forced her to have sex with male prostitutes, which he filmed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">The parties settled in that suit, too, but more lawsuits began to come down with similar allegations of Diddy drugging and sexually assaulting women. Then in May 2024, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/05\/17\/entertainment\/sean-combs-cassie-ventura\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">CNN published<\/a> hotel surveillance footage from 2016 that showed Combs grabbing Ventura by the neck, throwing her to the ground, kicking her and dragging her.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">Diddy was arrested a few months later, in September, on the federal charges.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">Earlier this month, Tony Buzbee, a Texas-based attorney, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/2024\/oct\/01\/sean-diddy-combs-120-victims-lawsuit\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">announced he was representing<\/a> more than 120 men and women whose allegations against Combs include \u201cviolent sexual assault or rape, facilitated sex with a controlled substance, dissemination of video recordings, sexual abuse of minors\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/usao-sdny\/media\/1368556\/dl\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">criminal complaint<\/a> states that Combs held \u201cfreak offs\u201d, where he \u201cdistributed a variety of controlled substances to victims, in part to keep the victims obedient and compliant\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">Combs\u2019s attorneys have repeatedly denied the allegations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">\u201cMr Combs and his legal team have full confidence in the facts, their legal defenses, and the integrity of the judicial process,\u201d Combs\u2019s attorneys said in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/10\/21\/entertainment\/sean-diddy-combs-new-lawsuits-monday\/index.html\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">statement to CNN<\/a>. \u201cIn court, the truth will prevail: that Mr Combs has never sexually assaulted anyone \u2013 adult or minor, man or woman.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">Despite those denials, \u201cwhen you have a consistent line of victims alleging the same or similar claims, it just gives a lot of more credibility to the allegations\u201d, said Tre Lovell, a Los Angeles-based entertainment attorney. If not, they could file a lawsuit, in which case their names would be publicized, Lovell said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">Combs\u2019s attorneys have argued that the sexual activity with his accusers was consensual. The legal experts predicted that it would be difficult for the defense attorneys to prove that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">\u201cThey might have been at that location initially consensually, but they didn\u2019t sign up for what happened to them there,\u201d Smith said. \u201cHaving read several of the civil complaints and the criminal complaints, I think that\u2019s going to be a fairly consistent story.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">If federal prosecutors decide to charge Comb\u2019s alleged enablers, they could then decide to testify against Combs to save themselves. Smith says that could also strengthen the government\u2019s cases.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">Lovell thinks that is unlikely because prosecutors would have already indicted them, though he also suggested that prosecutors could be talking with people to get them to be government witnesses in exchange for not indicting them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">\u201cIt\u2019s been pretty clear that they are just going after Diddy and his empire,\u201d Lovell said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-106f06m\">Despite how strong the case against Combs may appear, Cosby and Weinstein also faced a multitude of allegations and were found guilty of sexual assault and rape, but some of those <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2021\/jun\/30\/bill-cosby-sexual-assault-conviction-overturned-by-pennsylvania-court\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">convictions<\/a> were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2024\/apr\/25\/harvey-weinstein-rape-conviction-overturned\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">overturned<\/a>.
