{"id":119127,"date":"2024-10-28T00:29:55","date_gmt":"2024-10-27T17:29:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=119127"},"modified":"2024-10-28T00:29:55","modified_gmt":"2024-10-27T17:29:55","slug":"bezos-faces-criticism-after-executives-met-with-trump-on-day-of-posts-non-endorsement-washington-post","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=119127","title":{"rendered":"Bezos faces criticism after executives met with Trump on day of Post\u2019s non-endorsement | Washington Post"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n     data-ad-layout-key=\"-fb+5w+4e-db+86\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"7910942971\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">The multi-billionaire owner of the Washington Post, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/jeff-bezos\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Jeff Bezos<\/a>, continued facing criticism throughout the weekend because executives from his aerospace company met with Donald Trump on the same day the newspaper prevented its editorial team from publishing an endorsement of his opponent in the US presidential election.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Senior news and opinion leaders at the Washington Post flew to Miami in late September 2024 to meet with Bezos, who had reservations about the paper issuing an endorsement in the 5 November election, the New York Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/10\/27\/business\/media\/washington-post-president-endorsement.html\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Amazon and the space exploration company Blue Origin are among Bezos-owned business that still compete for lucrative federal government contracts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">And the Post on Friday announced it would not endorse a candidate in the 5 November election after its editorial board had already drafted its endorsement of Kamala Harris.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Friday\u2019s announcement did not mention Amazon or Blue Origin. But within hours, high-ranking officials of the latter company briefly met with Trump after a campaign speech in Austin, Texas, as the Republican nominee seeks a second presidency.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Trump met with Blue Origin chief executive officer David Limp and vice-president of government relations Megan Mitchell, the Associated Press reported.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Meanwhile, CNN <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/10\/27\/politics\/big-tech-ceos-donald-trump-election\/index.html\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">reported <\/a>that the Amazon CEO, Andy Jassy, had also recently reached out to speak with the former president by phone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Those reported overtures were eviscerated by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/washington-post\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Washington Post<\/a> editor-at-large and longtime columnist Robert Kagan, who resigned on Friday. On Saturday, he argued that the meeting Blue Origin executives had with Trump would not have taken place if the Post had endorsed the Democratic vice-president as it planned.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">\u201cTrump waited to make sure that Bezos did what he said he was going to do \u2013 and then met with the Blue Origin people,\u201d Kagan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/ex-washington-post-editor-robert-kagan-this-is-a-straight-jeff-bezos-donald-trump-quid-pro-quo\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">told <\/a>the Daily Beast on Saturday. \u201cWhich tells us that there was an actual deal made, meaning that Bezos communicated, or through his people, communicated directly with Trump, and they set up this quid pro quo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">The Post\u2019s publisher Will Lewis, hired by Bezos in January, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/washington-post-publisher-will-lewis-falls-on-sword-to-defend-jeff-bezos\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">defended<\/a> the paper\u2019s owner by claiming the decision to spike the Harris endorsement was his. But that has done little to defuse criticism from within the newspaper\u2019s ranks as well as the wave of subscription cancelations that has met the institution.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Eighteen opinion columnists at the Washington Post signed a dissenting column against the decision, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/2024\/10\/25\/post-columnist-no-endorsement-2024-trump-harris\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">calling <\/a>it \u201ca terrible mistake\u201d. The paper has already made endorsements this election cycle, including in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/2024\/10\/02\/maryland-senate-angela-alsobrooks-endorsement\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">a US senate seat race in Maryland. <\/a>The Washington Post <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/hillary-clinton-for-president\/2016\/10\/12\/665f9698-8caf-11e6-bf8a-3d26847eeed4_story.html\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">endorsed <\/a>Hillary Clinton when Trump won the presidency in 2016. It endorsed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/2020\/09\/28\/editorial-board-endorsement-joe-biden\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Joe Biden<\/a> when Trump lost in 2020, despite Trump\u2019s pledges to retaliate against anyone who opposed him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">In their criticism of the Post\u2019s decision on Friday, former and current employees cite the dangers to democracy posed by Trump, who has openly expressed his admiration for authoritarian rule amid his appeals for voters to return him to office.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">The former Washington Post journalists Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward, who broke the Watergate story, <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/campaign\/4955350-woodward-bernstein-rip-washington-post-for-withholding-endorsement\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">called<\/a> the decision \u201cdisappointing, especially this late in the electoral process\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">The former Washington Post executive editor Marty Baron said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/PostBaron\/status\/1849847940761657353\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">post<\/a> on X, \u201cThis is cowardice with democracy as its casualty\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">The cartoon team at the paper <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/2024\/oct\/26\/washington-post-cartoon-team-presidential-endorsement\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">published <\/a>a dark formless image protesting against the non-endorsement decision, playing on the \u201cdemocracy dies in darkness\u201d slogan that the Post adopted in 2017, five years after its purchase by Bezos.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">High-profile readers, including author bestselling author Stephen King as well as former congresswoman and vocal Trump critic Liz Cheney, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/news\/politics-news\/liz-cheney-cancels-washington-post-subscription-endorse-presidential-candidate-1236046157\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">announced <\/a>the cancellation of their Washington Post subscriptions with many others in protest.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">The Post\u2019s non-endorsement came shortly after the billionaire owner of the Los Angeles Times, Patrick Soon-Shiong, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2024\/oct\/25\/los-angeles-times-owner-blocks-harris-endorsement\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">refused <\/a>to allow the editorial board publish an endorsement of Harris.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Many pointed out how the stances from the Post and the LA Times seems to fit the definition of \u201canticipatory obedience\u201d as spelled out in On Tyranny, Tim Snyder\u2019s bestselling guide to authoritarianism. Snyder defines the term as \u201cgiving over your power to the aspiring authoritarian\u201d before the authoritarian is in position to compel that handover.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Bezos is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/billionaires\/profiles\/jeffrey-p-bezos\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">second wealthiest person<\/a> in the world behind Elon Musk, who has become a prominent supporter of Trump\u2019s campaign for a second presidency. He bought the Washington Post in 2013 for $250m.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">In 2021, Bezos stepped down as CEO of Amazon, <a href=\"https:\/\/lexfridman.com\/jeff-bezos-transcript\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">claiming <\/a>during a podcast interview that he intended to devote more time to Blue Origin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">The New York Times <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/07\/22\/business\/media\/jeff-bezos-washington-post.html\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">reported <\/a>Bezos had begun to get more involved in the paper in 2023 as it faced significant financial losses, a stream of employee departures and low morale.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">His pick of Lewis as publisher in January seemingly did little to help morale at the paper.
