Identifying features in the brain that can account for its diverse manifestations and commonalities across all ages has been a goal for scientists seeking to understand its cause.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>The latest research, from a team at the University of Rochester in New York, uses advanced scanning techniques to build on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/autism-spectrum-disorder\">previous work<\/a> on variations in the neurology of people with ASD, offering a closer look at the density and structure of the brain&#8217;s gray matter.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s often difficult to do this kind of analysis in living people \u2013 so a lot of the existing data we have is based on older post-mortem subjects \u2013 but the new image capturing and processing technology means we can now also see how the brain is wired in younger people.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_141333\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-141333\" style=\"width: 642px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/images\/2024\/10\/BrainDifferences.jpg\" alt=\"Brain differences\" width=\"642\" height=\"351\" class=\"wp-image-141333 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/images\/2024\/10\/BrainDifferences.jpg 642w, https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/images\/2024\/10\/BrainDifferences-600x328.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 642px) 100vw, 642px\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-141333\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Brain regions in autistic children representing greater (red) and reduced (blue) densities in neurons compared with non-autistic children. (Christensen et al., <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1002\/aur.3239\"><em>Autism Research<\/em><\/a>, 2024)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve spent many years describing the larger characteristics of brain regions, such as thickness, volume, and curvature,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.urmc.rochester.edu\/news\/publications\/neuroscience\/research-finds-neurons-look-different-in-children-with-autism\">says<\/a> neuroscientist Zachary Christensen from the University of Rochester.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;However, newer techniques in the field of neuroimaging, for characterizing cells using  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/magnetic-resonance-imaging\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73063\" data-postid=\"141330\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">MRI<\/a> [ <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/magnetic-resonance-imaging\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73063\" data-postid=\"141330\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">magnetic resonance imaging<\/a>], unveil new levels of complexity throughout development.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>The researchers used a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Diffusion-weighted_magnetic_resonance_imaging\">high-contrast form of MRI<\/a> to build detailed maps of the brains of 142 autistic children, comparing them with images taken from 8,971 controls (children without an  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/autism-spectrum-disorder\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73013\" data-postid=\"141330\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">autism<\/a> diagnosis). One set of readings was taken when the volunteers were 9 or 10, with a follow-up set taken a couple of years later.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>The comparisons revealed lower neuron densities in certain regions of the cerebral cortex thought to be responsible for our ability to learn, reason, problem solve, and successfully form memories.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>In other areas, there was increased neuron density. This was the case in a region called the amygdala, for example, which scientists think helps to process emotions. What&#8217;s more, when comparing autistic kids to kids <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/what-is-adhd\">with ADHD<\/a> and anxiety, these differences seemed to be specific to autism.<\/p>\n<p><!-- START single\/mrec --><br \/>\n<!-- END single\/mrec --><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s too early to say what these differences in density mean, but they could help explain some of the characteristics of autism.
