Responding to a question about old stories looking \u201cblurry\u201d in highlights, Mosseri said, \u201cIn general, we want to show the highest-quality video we can. But if something isn\u2019t watched for a long time \u2014 because the vast majority of views are in the beginning \u2014 we will move to a lower quality video.\u201d If the video later spikes in popularity again, \u201cthen we will re-render the higher quality video,\u201d he said in the response, which was reposted by a <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:1;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.threads.net\/@lindseygamble_\/post\/DBkEJmJvprg?xmt=AQGzELyz-rqMjGzaolF7htXicVIVIfBsihSv0AtwalT1mQ\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Threads;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:1;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">Threads<\/a> user (spotted by <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:2;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/10\/27\/24280968\/instagram-video-quality-lower-for-less-popular-videos\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:The Verge;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:2;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\"><em>The Verge<\/em><\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Further elaborating in a follow-up reply, though, <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:3;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.threads.net\/@mosseri\/post\/DBmuQaIP-Q8?xmt=AQGzELyz-rqMjGzaolF7htXicVIVIfBsihSv0AtwalT1mQ\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Mosseri;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:3;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">Mosseri<\/a> added, \u201cWe bias to higher quality (more CPU intensive encoding and more expensive storage for bigger files) for creators who drive more views.\u201d The comment has sparked concern from small creators in the replies who say it puts them at a disadvantage competing with others who have larger platforms. <a data-i13n=\"elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:4;pos:1\" class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/ai.meta.com\/blog\/meta-scalable-video-processor-MSVP\/#efficiency\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Meta;elm:context_link;elmt:doNotAffiliate;cpos:4;pos:1;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\">Meta<\/a> has previously said it uses \u201cdifferent encoding configurations to process videos based on their popularity\u201d as part of how it manages its computing resources.<\/p>\n<p>The performance system \u201cworks at an aggregate level,\u201d Mosseri said, \u201cnot an individual viewer level\u2026 It\u2019s not a binary theshhold [sic], but rather a sliding scale.\u201d In response to one user who questioned its fairness for smaller creators, Mosseri said the quality shift \u201cdoesn\u2019t seem to matter much\u201d in practice as it \u201cisn\u2019t huge\u201d and viewers appear to care more about video content over quality. \u201cQuality seems to be much more important to the original creator, who is more likely to delete the video if it looks poor, than to their viewers,\u201d he said.
