However, the new study suggests that <a href=\"https:\/\/interestingengineering.com\/military\/pentagons-supercomputer-cloud-service\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"dofollow noopener\">HPC<\/a> could be useful for <a href=\"http:\/\/research.physics.illinois.edu\/QI\/Photonics\/tomography-files\/tomo_chapter_2004.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">quantum tomography<\/a> \u2014- the technique used to determine the <a href=\"https:\/\/interestingengineering.com\/science\/coldest-lab-rare-quantum-state\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"dofollow noopener\">quantum state<\/a> of a quantum system.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>In their new study, the researchers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uni-paderborn.de\/en\/news-item\/142737\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">claim<\/a>, \u201cBy developing customized open-source algorithms using high-performance computing, we have carried out quantum tomography on a photonic quantum detector on a mega-scale.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading h3-style\" id=\"h-hpc-enables-mega-scale-quantum-tomography\">HPC enables mega-scale quantum tomography<\/h2>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/interestingengineering.com\/innovation\/worlds-smallest-quantum-light-detector\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"dofollow noopener\">quantum photonic detector<\/a> is an advanced tool for detecting and measuring individual light particles (photons). It is highly sensitive and can gather detailed information about various properties of photons, such as their energy levels or polarization. This information is very useful for quantum research, experiments, and technologies.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Accurate determination of the quantum state of the photonic detector is therefore crucial for precise measurements. However, large amounts of <a href=\"https:\/\/interestingengineering.com\/innovation\/samsung-unveils-fastest-aichip\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"dofollow noopener\">data processing<\/a> are required to perform the quantum tomography of such an advanced tool.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This is where the new HPC software can help. To demonstrate its potential, \u201cWe performed quantum tomography on a megascale quantum photonic detector covering a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/science\/Hilbert-space\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hilbert space<\/a> of 10<sup>6<\/sup>,\u201d the study authors note.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>Hilbert space is a mathematical framework that describes a multi-dimensional space where each point represents a possible state of <a href=\"https:\/\/interestingengineering.com\/innovation\/device-store-retrieve-quantum-data\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"dofollow noopener\">a quantum system<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It includes an inner product to calculate distances and angles between states, essential for concepts like probability and superposition. Such spaces can have infinite dimensions, representing a vast range of possible states.<\/p>\n<p>Using the HPC software, the study authors successfully \u201ccompleted calculations that described the quantum photonic detector, within a few minutes \u2014- faster than anyone else before,\u201d the study authors added.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading h3-style\" id=\"h-this-classical-approach-can-trigger-new-quantum-developments\">This classical approach can trigger new quantum developments<\/h2>\n<p>HPC isn\u2019t limited to determining the state of the quantum photonic detector.
