And with it come thoughts about costumes, pumpkins, ghastly decorations and \u2014 of course \u2014 candy.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2p7yfew000h3b6kk5ctcomu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Who doesn\u2019t love an excuse to pop fun-size chocolate bars, candy corn, lollipops and other goodies into their mouth all day long? But let\u2019s face it; it\u2019s not healthy to eat that way all the time since almost all these treats are laden with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nutrition\/php\/data-research\/added-sugars.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">added sugar<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2p7yfew000i3b6kdumepb7g@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            As Americans, our excess sugar consumption unfortunately is not confined to one candy-centered holiday a year. Consuming added sugar has become a part of life, woven into almost every meal.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2p7yfew000j3b6kt552adjt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Americans 2 years and older consume<strong> <\/strong>on average 17 teaspoons of added sugar a day, according to the most <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ars.usda.gov\/ARSUserFiles\/80400530\/pdf\/FPED\/tables_1-4_FPED_1718.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recent government data available<\/a>. It\u2019s almost three times the upper limit of what organizations such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart.org\/en\/healthy-living\/healthy-eating\/eat-smart\/sugar\/how-much-sugar-is-too-much\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American Heart Association<\/a> recommend for women \u2014 6 teaspoons \u2014 and almost twice that for men \u2014 9 teaspoons. (Others, such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dietaryguidelines.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/2020-12\/Dietary_Guidelines_for_Americans_2020-2025.pdf#page=31\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">US Department of Agriculture<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news\/item\/04-03-2015-who-calls-on-countries-to-reduce-sugars-intake-among-adults-and-children\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">World Health Organization<\/a>, have slightly different recommendations.)\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2p7yfew000k3b6kygs6oie5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Research continues to pile up that eating too much added sugar can lead to a plethora of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/04\/05\/health\/added-free-sugars-health-effects-study-wellness\/index.html\">health problems<\/a>, such as weight gain, type 2 diabetes, heart and liver disease, cancer and even depression.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2p7yfew000l3b6k0lwnihk5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            This love affair with sugar is not entirely our fault; the system is rigged against us, according to one expert.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2p7yfew000m3b6kst6mdv8s@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIf you\u2019re one of the unfortunate people that really struggles with craving and compulsion around sugar, you\u2019re stuck in a food environment that is constantly feeding you cues: Eat sugar, eat sugar,\u201d Dr. Laura Schmidt told CNN Chief Medical Correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta recently on his podcast Chasing Life.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2p7yfew000n3b6kficn0s7b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            You can listen to the podcast\u2019s full episode<em> <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/link.chtbl.com\/t03J8-rB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a><em>.<\/em>\n    <\/p>\n<p>\n    <iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/audio\/podcasts\/chasing-life\/episodes\/aa7022c0-37bb-11ef-8219-3ba2eaf471d6.articleplayer\" width=\"100%\" height=\"385\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2p7yfew000p3b6knl19jo8h@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Schmidt is a sociologist and a professor of health policy in the School of Medicine at the University of\u00a0California, San Francisco. She\u2019s also the lead investigator at <a href=\"https:\/\/sugarscience.ucsf.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SugarScience,<\/a> a clearinghouse for scientific evidence about sugar and its impact on health under the auspices of UC San Francisco.<em\/>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2p7yfew000q3b6knojjwq3p@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Schmidt said she doesn\u2019t think people should vilify sugar but they do need to reduce how much they eat.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2p7yfew000r3b6kezh5zhe4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThere\u2019s a problem in the way that we talk about food and nutrition, which is that we focus on single ingredients or single nutrients,\u201d she said. \u201cFrom a health standpoint, that\u2019s not what matters. What matters is the whole diet; what matters is having all of the macronutrients in a relatively good balance.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2p7yfew000s3b6k0ky9vd44@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            However, Schmidt added that Americans are \u201cway over the limit\u201d on sugar. \u201cAnd we really need to be thinking about ways to dial that particular ingredient down,\u201d she said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2p7yfew000t3b6kig8hogne@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But as many know, it\u2019s not always easy to cut back on sugar because it lurks in so many foods, from the obvious (sodas, cakes and candy) to the more subtle (breakfast cereals, bread, yogurt and tomato sauce). By some estimates, added sweeteners are in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2019\/03\/19\/health\/bliss-point-addictive-food\">74% of packaged foods<\/a> sold in supermarkets.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2p7yfew000u3b6kkbnyg416@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The reason why added sugar wound up in so many of food items is pretty straightforward, Schmidt said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2p7yfew000v3b6kmpxsouys@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe food companies have three ingredients that they can use to make food more palatable \u2014 some people say hyper-palatable, so extremely attractive to consumers \u2014\u00a0and that\u2019s sugar, fat and salt,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd, pretty much, they vary the combination of sugar, fat and salt in most of our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/05\/08\/health\/ultraprocessed-foods-death-study-wellness\">ultraprocessed foods<\/a>. And often they\u2019re put in there because the industrial food production process kind of makes stuff taste bad.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2p7yfew000w3b6kb0j47z0i@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Breaking up with sugar can be hard to do. Schmidt has five tips to tame your intake.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2p7yfew000x3b6kean39rsy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Avoid liquid sugar, Schmidt said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2p7yfew000y3b6kdc14arrr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cFocus on reducing or cutting out sugar-sweetened beverages, such as<strong> <\/strong>sodas, sports drinks, energy drinks, fake juice pouches,\u201d she said via email. \u201cThese are by far the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/healthy-weight-growth\/rethink-your-drink\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">largest source <\/a>of added sugars in the American diet, especially for children, and have no nutritional value.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2p7yfew000z3b6kq99hieml@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Schmidt noted that liquid sugar can easily become a habit that leaves you consuming large amounts without really noticing.<em\/>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2p7yfew00103b6krxf38ttl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Reduce sugar cues in your work environment.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2p7yfew00113b6kyer7jon0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cEncourage your employer or work unit to join others that have stopped selling sugary drinks in vending machines and cafeterias at work,\u201d Schmidt said, adding that these can be replaced with the \u201cmany delicious non-sugar alternatives.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2p7yfew00123b6kgkhhndbu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamainternalmedicine\/fullarticle\/2753425\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Clinical trials show<\/a> that when employers stop selling sugary beverages, regular soda drinkers lose, on average, a half inch in their waist circumference within 10 months,\u201d Schmidt said, adding that <a href=\"https:\/\/sugarscience.ucsf.edu\/resource-kit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SugarScience<\/a> provides free materials to help workplaces reduce the availability of those beverages.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2p7yfew00133b6kome1aahi@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And while you\u2019re at it, maybe take the long way around the candy bowl in the common area, so you don\u2019t hear it calling your name.<em\/>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2p7yfew00143b6k2pmrtcgm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Don\u2019t forget to clean up your home food environment, too.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2p7yfew00153b6kr9ly98x0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cAgree as a household not to have sugary junk foods and beverages around \u2014 have them when you go out instead, but not as staples at home,\u201d Schmidt recommended. \u201cStudies show that sugar reduction is best done in groups, not alone.\u00a0So, make a reasonable plan together for what you will and won\u2019t have lying around in the kitchen.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2p7yfew00163b6kr71xguci@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Even if eliminating sugary junk food and soda at home is not enough to stop you from thinking about them, doing so will give you time to resist your impulse to indulge.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2p7yfew00173b6kuwffo9xu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Have a plan for dealing with the psychological stress of sugar withdrawal.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2p7yfew00183b6ksgqu9m7z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cSugar cravings are very real. And there are easily learned, evidence-based strategies for coping with them,\u201d Schmidt said. \u201cThey rely on cultivating the simple art of experiencing the craving in a relaxed state without acting on it \u2014 called \u2018surfing the urge.\u2019\u201d<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2paoa3e00003b6mfrwtgadw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            There are free \u201csurfing the urge\u201d guided meditations online. Schmidt also points to <a href=\"https:\/\/redcap.sutterhealth.org\/redcap\/surveys\/?s=KXRH989W9YKF9LY3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">self-led audio resources<\/a>\u00a0that SugarScience uses to help soda drinkers quit who are participating in a 16-site, National Institutes of Health-funded randomized clinical trial.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2p7yfew001a3b6kifospdkd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Save sugary foods for desserts; don\u2019t allow them to creep into every part of your diet.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2p7yfew001b3b6ktlircv4o@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cAdult women should confine themselves to less than 6 teaspoons of added sugar daily, 9 teaspoons for men, 4 teaspoons for children, and no added sugars for children under 2,\u201d\u00a0\u00a0Schmidt said via email.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2p7yfew001c3b6k03nxkxre@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            One way to control the intake of added sugars, Schmidt said, is to make desserts and treats yourself. \u201cThis means enjoy the sugar that you do eat by baking together and savoring together, making the (added) sugar that you do eat part of celebrating life,\u201d she said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2p7yfew001d3b6ka70h9o6x@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Sticking as closely as possible to these guidelines means scrutinizing food labels. Look for the line that shows you the \u201cadded sugar\u201d content in a food to tally up the grams of excess sugar you consume in a day.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2p7yfew001e3b6kl5qbr6wz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <em>We hope these five tips help you reset your sugar consumption.
