About a third of plant-based milks have sugar levels<\/span> similar to strawberry or\u00a0chocolate milk. <\/p>\n<p>Still, there is a perception that plant-based means health-conscious even though many of these milk products contain additives and emulsifiers that qualify them as ultra-processed foods (UPFs). <\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>Emulsifiers, which include gelatin, whey protein, xantham gum, and carboxymethylcellulose, are commonly added to nondairy milk to prevent separation and create a smooth, creamy texture.  <\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Many plant-based milks qualify as UPFs, a category of consumables experts believe could be fueling the colon cancer epidemic in young people. <span class=\"credit\">mitand73 \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/08\/26\/lifestyle\/ultraprocessed-foods-are-everywhere-how-bad-are-they\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ultra-processed foods<\/a>\u00a0are disruptive to the microbial system, and<\/span> many experts believe overexposure to UPFs is partly to blame for the <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/06\/10\/lifestyle\/why-gen-x-is-getting-cancer-more-often-than-their-parents-generation\/#:~:text=%E2%80%9COur%20results%20speak%20to%20the,incidence%20of%20leading%20cancers%20combined.%E2%80%9D\">rising rates of colon cancer in young people<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>A staggering 20% of colorectal cancer cases in 2019 were discovered in people younger than 55, up from 11% in 1995.<\/p>\n<p>Alarmingly, this younger demographic tends to be diagnosed in the disease\u2019s later stages, making it harder to treat and cure, according to docs who expect colon cancer to cause\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.org\/cancer\/types\/colon-rectal-cancer\/about\/key-statistics.html#:~:text=In%20the%20United%20States%2C%20colorectal,about%2053%2C010%20deaths%20during%202024.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">about 53,000 US deaths this year<\/a>. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Is it time to ditch non-dairy milks? <span class=\"credit\">Artem \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nih.gov\/news-events\/nih-research-matters\/food-additives-promote-inflammation-colon-cancer-mice\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Past research<\/a>\u00a0has linked the dietary emulsifiers\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/agricultural-and-biological-sciences\/carboxymethylcellulose#:~:text=Carboxymethylcellulose%20is%20now%20one%20of,pastas%2C%20canned%20and%20fruit%20compotes.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">carboxymethylcellulose\u00a0<\/a>(CMC) and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/compound\/Polysorbate-80\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">polysorbate 80<\/a>\u00a0to colon cancer in mice. These additives are said to alter intestinal bacteria and promote gut inflammation. As established, chronic inflammation damages DNA and raises cancer risk. <\/p>\n<p>A <a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7986288\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">separate study from 2021<\/a>\u00a0found that when introduced to a colony of bacteria similar to those found in the human gut, emulsifiers triggered the bacteria to die or be compromised. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Emulsifiers like those found in many non-dairy milks, have been known to disrupt the gut biome.  <span class=\"credit\">jeny_lk \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Our\u00a0gut\u00a0microbiome \u2014 the collection of bacteria, viruses, and fungi in our digestive system \u2014 is believed to play a key role in the development and progression of\u00a0colorectal cancer.<\/p>\n<p>Research has suggested the bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract play an important role in fighting back against cancer \u2013 and that disrupting it could make colorectal cancers more likely.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Some plant-based milks can cause blood sugar spikes.  <span class=\"credit\">Drobot Dean \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u00a0<span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/med.miami.edu\/faculty\/maria-abreu-md\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr. Maria Abreu<\/a>, a professor of medicine, microbiology, and immunology at the University of Miami, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/09\/10\/lifestyle\/emulsifiers-may-be-to-blame-for-colon-cancer-rise-doctor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">made waves last year when she voiced her suspicions<\/a><\/span>\u00a0that the chemicals and bacteria in processed food are causing gut enzymes to flare up, leading to inflammation and, perhaps, cancer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven the foods we think are good for us can be a problem,\u201d Abreu explained. \u201cThings like emulsifiers that are added in, things that are creamy, you know, the nonfat yogurts and all these things, really can change the gut microbiome very profoundly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And it\u2019s not just additives and emulsifiers that make plant-based milks a cause for concern, but the blood sugar spike they can create.  <\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Our\u00a0gut\u00a0microbiome \u2014 the collection of bacteria, viruses, and fungi in our digestive system \u2014 is believed to play a vital role in the development and progression of\u00a0colorectal cancer. <span class=\"credit\">Artem \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Jessica Cording, a registered dietitian and author, told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/health\/article-13966563\/oat-almond-milk-colon-cancer-link-ingredient.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">DailyMail.com<\/a>, \u201cI focus a lot on blood sugar management in my work, which is essential for so many aspects of our physical and mental wellness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As Cording explains, oat milk in particular, is lower in protein and higher in carbs than dairy or nut milk. As the body breaks down these carbs, it causes a spike.
