The previously healthy, active 15-year-old is now hospitalized and battling kidney failure \u2014 a rare and potentially life-threatening complication of E. coli poisoning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Kamberlyn, of Grand Junction, Colorado, is one of dozens of people who say they became sick after having eaten McDonald\u2019s Quarter Pounders. According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/ecoli\/outbreaks\/e-coli-O157.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/a>, at least 75 people across 13 states have been infected with E. coli following meals at the fast-food chain. One person has died.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">McDonald\u2019s says the <a href=\"https:\/\/corporate.mcdonalds.com\/corpmcd\/our-stories\/article\/always-putting-food-safety-first.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">most likely source of the contamination<\/a> was slivered onions served on its Quarter Pounders. The restaurant giant has removed the onions from its menu items. The distributor of the onions, California-based Taylor Farms, has said that while no specific ingredient has been confirmed as the source of the outbreak, it has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.taylorfarms.com\/bug-taylor-farms-colorado-foodservice-voluntary-yellow-onion-recall\/#:~:text=We%20take%20pride%20in%20providing,individuals%20and%20their%20families%20impacted.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cpreemptively recalled\u201d yellow onions from the Colorado facility<\/a> that distributed produce to food service customers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">In her first interview about her ordeal, Kamberlyn, a high school freshman,\u00a0wiped away tears as she summarized how the past few weeks have felt: \u201cNot fun,\u201d she said via Zoom from her hospital room Monday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Kamberlyn\u2019s mother, Brittany Randall, said her daughter\u2019s symptoms started this month with a fever and stomach pain. Neither Kamberlyn nor Randall was too concerned at first.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cWe both kind of thought I just had a fever, like just the flu or something \u2014 a stomach bug,\u201d Kamberlyn said. \u201cBut then I started throwing up, having diarrhea, and it was bloody, so it scared me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Randall took Kamberlyn to the doctor and then to the emergency room for some scans, which didn\u2019t show anything significant, she said. But back at home, Kamberlyn didn\u2019t get better.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cI think it was day six that she said: \u2018Something\u2019s not right. I don\u2019t feel good. I need to go back to the hospital,\u2019\u201d Randall said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">This time, the tests showed something alarming: Kamberlyn had an E. coli infection so severe that she was in renal failure. On Oct. 18, she was airlifted to Children\u2019s Hospital Colorado outside Denver, where she has remained ever since.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cIt\u2019s been definitely a roller coaster from the time that we\u2019ve gotten here until now. She has received multiple rounds of dialysis in the hospital.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Randall said that her daughter\u2019s kidneys are showing \u201csome signs\u201d of functioning again but that it\u2019s not clear what the extent of the lasting damage will be.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cWe\u2019re not really sure what it\u2019s going to look like for her moving forward,\u201d she said, adding: \u201cShe\u2019ll probably have to do another round of dialysis. We\u2019re hoping that that\u2019s the last one, but we also don\u2019t know, and we don\u2019t know if there\u2019s going to be future issues.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Kamberlyn and Randall plan to sue McDonald\u2019s and have hired an attorney who has already filed two suits on behalf of other clients. But for now, they are focused on Kamberlyn\u2019s recovery.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Symptoms for most people infected with E. coli usually start three to four days after they consume contaminated food, and include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea and vomiting, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/ecoli\/outbreaks\/e-coli-O157.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to the CDC<\/a>. Most who are infected recover without treatment within a week.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">But a very small percentage of patients \u2014 estimates of how many vary, with some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.childrenshospital.org\/conditions\/hemolytic-uremic-syndrome\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">calculating it as low as 2%<\/a> \u2014 go on to develop HUS.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">People who are very young or very old are the most susceptible to HUS, said Dr. Nicole Iovine, chief epidemiologist at UF Health Shands Hospital in Florida, who isn\u2019t treating Kamberlyn.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cIt\u2019s a rare complication, but it is definitely something that can occur. Unfortunately, some people end up with decreased kidney function or permanent renal failure,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Before she contracted E. coli, Kamberlyn didn\u2019t have any underlying health conditions, and she regularly exercised and played softball \u2014 all factors that should help her as she tries to get better from HUS, Iovine said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cIt\u2019s not predictable, and the pre-existing health of the patient is really important,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The experience has been terrifying for Randall, who said she is grateful that Kamberlyn recognized that something was very wrong.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cIf she would have waited, if I would have waited longer, she could not be here right now,\u201d Randall said. \u201cShe went from being super healthy and no issues at all to possibly kidney damage for her whole life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">McDonald\u2019s said in an email that hearing reports like Kamberlyn\u2019s \u201cis devastating to us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cWe know that people and families have been significantly impacted, and the well-being of our customers is deeply important to us,\u201d the email said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">In a video posted Sunday, McDonald\u2019s USA President Joe Erlinger <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=HZqTUqfY_iw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">vowed to regain customers\u2019 trust<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cOn behalf of the McDonald\u2019s system, I want you to hear from me: We are sorry,\u201d he said in a video posted Sunday. \u201cFor those customers affected, you have my commitment that, led by our values, we will make this right.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Ron Simon, a national food poisoning attorney representing Kamberlyn and 32 other victims of the McDonald\u2019s E. coli outbreak from 10 states, said he has received hundreds of calls from people since news of the outbreak spread.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cIt\u2019s going to be a lot more cases in this outbreak than 75,\u201d he said, referring to the latest case tally from the CDC. \u201cWay more, without question.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Simon said he plans to file Kamberlyn\u2019s suit this week.
