Warren\/AP<\/p>\n<p>    <\/span>\n<\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Since before his first presidential run in 2016, former President Donald Trump has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2020\/09\/06\/910320018\/fascism-scholar-says-u-s-is-losing-its-democratic-status\">accused of invoking the leadership style of the world\u2019s most infamous fascists<\/a>, namely Benito Mussolini, the Italian dictator who popularized fascism, and Adolf Hitler.<\/p>\n<p>With Election Day looming, the fascist accusations against Trump grew louder this past week.<\/p>\n<p>Retired Marine Gen. But many experts who say the fascist label is apt argue that it\u2019s more than just political polemics. Both leaders censored the press and encouraged racism through propaganda.<\/p>\n<p>The word \u201cfascist\u201d has since taken on a looser definition, Griffin said. It\u2019s not just Trump \u2014 it\u2019s become a favorite epithet in the political sphere on both sides. Many on the left have lobbed the term at other conservative and right-wing leaders, including Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush. Conservatives, for their part, are <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/6306945\/donald-trump-democrats-fascists\/\">also known<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/entertainment\/marjorie-taylor-greene-slams-fascist-145916729.html\">compare Democrats to fascists<\/a>.<br \/>\u00a0<br \/>\u201cAnything that smacks of authoritarianism or chauvinism or being a control freak can be dismissed as fascist,\u201d Griffin said.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"edTag\">Why some scholars use &#8220;fascist&#8221; to describe Trump<\/h3>\n<p>Those who endorse the fascist label for the former president have pointed to the following marks of Trump\u2019s campaign and presidency: Upon announcing his 2016 presidential bid, Trump maligned <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2017\/11\/02\/561350465\/races-for-governor-put-trumps-immigration-message-on-the-ballot\">Mexican migrants as rapists<\/a> and pledged to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2018\/06\/26\/606481548\/supreme-court-upholds-trump-travel-ban\">ban all Muslims<\/a> from entering the United States. He\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/post-politics\/wp\/2016\/02\/28\/trump-on-retweeting-questionable-quote-what-difference-does-it-make-whether-its-mussolini\/\">cited Mussolini<\/a> and, according to former staff, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2021\/jul\/06\/donald-trump-hitler-michael-bender-book\">has spoken highly<\/a> of Hitler. But he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/10\/23\/magazine\/robert-paxton-facism.html\">said<\/a> his mind changed after Jan. 6. The world is falling apart. It&#8217;s got inner and outer enemies. There are forces at work destroying sacred, eternal truths or important things about the nation or the race,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Jason Stanley, who is a philosophy professor at Yale University and author of<em> How Fascism Works<\/em>, said Trump is also targeting the same people Hitler did. He told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wnycstudios.org\/podcasts\/otm\/articles\/fascism-fear-and-the-science-behind-horror-films\">WNYC\u2019s <em>On The Media<\/em><\/a> last week that \u201cthe word is required now to keep us out of the history books as being complicit in the rise of fascism.\u201d But he also acknowledged that it\u2019s not a perfect fit: \u201cI use the word fascism because we don\u2019t have another word for something that looks so much like fascism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Griffin, however, said the fascist label is a red herring.
