Bannon, 70, surrendered to prison on 1 July after the US supreme court<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/article\/2024\/jun\/28\/supreme-court-steve-bannon-prison\" data-link-name=\"in body link\"> rebuffed<\/a> his effort to postpone this sentence pending appeal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">\u201cI\u2019m not broken, I\u2019m empowered,\u201d Bannon said upon leaving the lockup at about 3.15am local time, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/10\/29\/us\/steve-bannon-prison-release.html\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">according to the New York Times<\/a>. Bannon wasted little time in resuming his position as a pro-Trump demagogue, implying that political unrest would unfold after the election.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">\u201cIf people think American politics has been divisive before, you haven\u2019t seen anything,\u201d Bannon said, according to reports.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">He also insisted that serving time behind bars was \u201c1,000%\u201d worth the price of refusing congressional testimony. \u201cIf you\u2019re not prepared to go to prison to fight for your country,\u201d Bannon said, \u201cyou\u2019re not prepared to fight for your country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Bannon <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2022\/jul\/22\/steve-bannon-trial-trump-contempt-congress-charges\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">was convicted<\/a> on two counts of contempt of Congress in July 2022. Federal prosecutors argued that Bannon thought himself \u201cabove the law\u201d in refusing to sit before the January 6 House select committee and rejecting demands for documents in his work to subvert 2020\u2019s election results \u2013 which saw Joe Biden besting Trump.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">The prosecution said that Bannon \u201cchose to show his contempt for Congress\u2019s authority and its processes\u201d in flouting these subpoenas. Bannon has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/article\/2024\/jun\/21\/steve-bannon-prison?\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">insisted<\/a> that the convictions against him were politically motivated, similar to Trump\u2019s unsubstantiated claims that law enforcement actions against him stemmed from a nefarious Democratic conspiracy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">David Schoen, Bannon\u2019s lawyer, claimed that this case prompted \u201cserious constitutional issues\u201d that needed to be examined by the supreme court.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">\u201cQuite frankly, Mr Bannon should make no apology.
