Nine people were injured. The skyscraper \u2013 completed in 1928 \u2013 suffered extensive damage. The Russians bring hell,\u201d said Denys Bohdanov as he surveyed the damage. The powerful FAB-500 bomb hit third floor-offices, sheering off a corner of the building and exposing an internal zig-zag staircase.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Windows were blown out. On Tuesday rescuers tossed glass and door frames from broken upper stories onto a courtyard below. A truck and digger scooped up debris. It was constructed when Kharkiv served as the capital of communist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/ukraine\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Ukraine<\/a>. It survived the second world war and after Ukraine\u2019s independence became a government office.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Kharkiv\u2019s mayor, Ihor Terekhov, called the concrete structure an architectural treasure for all of Ukraine. He said the strike by the Kremlin was \u201ctruly horrifying to see\u201d. \u201cIf we look back at world war two, even Hitler couldn\u2019t do what the Russians have done,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Volodmyr Zelenskyy said Derzhprom was \u201cseverely damaged\u201d, in a night of several other Russian attacks, including on the president\u2019s home city of Kryvyi Rih. Zelenskyy implicitly criticised the UN chief, Ant\u00f3nio Guterres, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/clyd4xg70ejo\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">who met Vladimir Putin last week<\/a> at a Brics summit in the Russian city of Kazan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">\u201cEvery handshake with war criminal Putin boosts his confidence. Every pleasant smile convinces him that he can get away with his crimes. Curator Oleksandr Afanasiev said the worst affected offices belonged to Kharkiv\u2019s regional administration and to its court. \u201cWe can rebuild, of course. But it takes time and resources,\u201d he pointed out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Those injured included a police officer and a female security guard who was inside when the strike happened. On Tuesday workers brought in plywood to board up windows, navigating steep, nearly a century old stairwells. The lift no longer worked. In the street outside, men repaired a damaged cafe and shops.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Kharkiv has come under <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=wJSvFlgPih0\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">sustained assault<\/a> since the beginning of Russia\u2019s full-scale 2022 invasion. After failing to occupy the city, the Russian army has pounded its centre and suburbs with artillery and ballistic missiles. Previous attacks have pounded adjacent buildings including the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=pq6nUd8xHgk\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">regional state administration<\/a>, the headquarters of the SBU security service and the five-star <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2024\/jan\/19\/kharkiv-reels-under-russian-missiles-ukraine\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Kharkiv palace hotel<\/a>, injuring journalists.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Residents said the latest bombing was another painful blow. \u201cI feel such a deep pure horror, it\u2019s unbearable. It\u2019s the building I love the most in this effin world. For every Kharkiv local it\u2019s the symbol of freedom and ingenuity,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/nDU3lGUmmc\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Viktoriia Grivina<\/a> \u2013 a Kharkiv writer and doctoral candidate \u2013 said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Bohdanov, a historian turned rescue worker, said Russia\u2019s aggression towards Ukraine was the product of longstanding jealousy and an \u201cimperial complex\u201d. \u201cThey\u2019ve been like this for centuries,\u201d he said. \u201cThey hate us because we live better than they do. They are morons. Even the Nazis didn\u2019t try and wipe out Derzhprom.<strong>\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Others said the building embodied Kharkiv\u2019s stubborn resistance to Russia\u2019s persistent and brutal attempts to take over. <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/maria_avdv\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Maria Avdeeva<\/a>, a security expert, pointed out that Derzhprom was the largest surviving constructivist monument in the world. \u201cThis is Russia strategy of terror and intimidation in action,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Avdeeva complained that Ukraine was vulnerable to relentless air attacks because the Biden administration \u2013 as well as the UK and France \u2013 have refused to give Kyiv permission to use western weapons against military targets deep inside Russia.
