This is not intended as a comprehensive list of his false claims at the event.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2uqecc50005356maed69nh2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <strong>Harris\u2019 border role<\/strong>: Trump falsely claimed that President Joe Biden appointed Vice President Kamala Harris \u201cas the border czar,\u201d adding that, regardless of the term, \u201cshe was responsible for the borders, totally responsible.\u201d Biden never made Harris \u201cborder czar,\u201d a label the White House has always emphasized is inaccurate, and never put her in charge of border security, a responsibility of Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas. In\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ReichlinMelnick\/status\/1815545630204342557\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reality<\/a>, Biden gave Harris a more limited immigration-related assignment in 2021, asking her to lead diplomacy with\u202fEl Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras\u202fin an attempt to address the conditions that prompted their citizens to try to migrate to the United States.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2uqecc50006356mj4yzdg9i@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <strong>The people on the ICE non-detained list<\/strong>:<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Trump, referring to a list of immigrants with homicide convictions,\u00a0repeated\u00a0his false claim that Harris \u201clet the more than 13,000 convicted illegal aliens \u2013 nobody would have let these people into our country.\u201d In reality,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/09\/29\/politics\/fact-check-trump-harris-immigrants-homicide\/index.html\">the Department of Homeland Security and independent experts have noted<\/a>\u00a0that this figure is about people who entered the country over decades, including during Trump\u2019s own administration, not just under Biden and Harris \u2013 and the figure includes people who are currently incarcerated in federal, state and local prisons and jails. You can read more\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/09\/29\/politics\/fact-check-trump-harris-immigrants-homicide\/index.html\">here<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2uqecc50007356mg4vess2i@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <strong>Migrants in Springfield, Ohio<\/strong>: Trump falsely\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/live\/rGQ-qHw56hc?feature=shared&amp;t=1327\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">claimed<\/a> of Springfield, Ohio:\u00a0 \u201cThey dropped 32,000 illegal aliens. They tried to give them legal terminology, but \u2013 it\u2019s not. Illegal aliens, 32,000 into a 50,000 person town, beautiful town, no problems, and now they don\u2019t know what to do.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2uqecc50008356mxmb45nrs@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            This is false in more than one way. While we don\u2019t know the immigration status of each and every Haitian immigrant in Springfield, the community is, on the whole, in the country lawfully. The Springfield city website\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/springfieldohio.gov\/immigration-faqs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">says<\/a>, \u201cYES, Haitian immigrants are here legally, under the Immigration Parole Program. Once here, immigrants are then eligible to apply for Temporary Protected Status (TPS).\u201d Republican Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/09\/20\/opinion\/springfield-haitian-migrants-ohio.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote in a New York Times op-ed about Springfield in September<\/a>\u202fthat the Haitian immigrants \u201care there legally\u201d and that, as a Trump-Vance supporter, he is \u201csaddened\u201d by the candidates\u2019 disparagement of \u201cthe legal migrants living in Springfield.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2uqecc50009356mij8n6vy6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Second, nobody \u201cdropped\u201d the immigrants into Springfield; the city\u2019s Haitian residents were\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/09\/19\/us\/springfield-ohio-haitians-immigration-cec\/index.html\">not sent there by a government resettlement program<\/a>. Rather, they\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.springfieldnewssun.com\/news\/the-true-story-about-why-and-how-haitian-immigrants-came-to-springfield\/VOJOZYVU6REMZOFXZOEQQ5RNNU\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">independently decided to move to the city<\/a>\u202fbecause of employment opportunities, affordable housing and the presence of a Haitian community, among other factors.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2uqecc5000a356mj896cjiz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And while there is no official tally of the number of immigrants in Springfield, Trump\u2019s \u201c32,000\u201d figure greatly exceeds local estimates. The website for the city of Springfield\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/springfieldohio.gov\/immigration-faqs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">says<\/a>\u202fthere are an estimated 12,000 to 15,000 immigrants in the county that includes Springfield, where the total population is\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.clarkcountyohio.gov\/271\/Demographics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">about 138,000<\/a>. Chris Cook, the county\u2019s health commissioner,\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/live\/hvIt9NLmBGM?feature=shared&amp;t=1180\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>\u202fin July that his team estimated the best number was 10,000 to 12,000 Haitian residents in the county.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2uqecc5000b356mjaoyvubm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <strong>A gang and Aurora, Colorado<\/strong>: Trump falsely claimed that a gang from Venezuela has \u201cliterally taken over the town\u201d in Aurora, Colorado, adding \u201cthey\u2019ve taken over large sections of the town.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2uqecc5000c356mptt3hjqk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The gang has members in Aurora and has caused problems in some apartment buildings, but it has not come close to taking over the city. Republican Aurora Mayor Mike Coffman said in a\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.auroragov.org\/news\/whats_new\/mayor__council_member_address_gang_concerns\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">September joint statement<\/a>, issued with the conservative chair of the city council\u2019s public safety committee, that the gang \u201chas not \u2018taken over\u2019 the city\u201d and that problems with the gang \u201cexperienced at a select few properties do not apply to the city as a whole or large portions of it.\u201d Coffman noted that the city\u2019s police department had linked 10 people to the gang and arrested eight.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2uqecc5000d356m3c5c2qz3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <strong>The number of migrants<\/strong>: Trump repeated his false claim that Harris \u201cleft 21 million aliens pour across our country,\u201d meaning \u201clet\u201d rather than \u201cleft.\u201d\u00a0 Through September, the country had\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbp.gov\/newsroom\/stats\/nationwide-encounters\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recorded<\/a>\u00a0under 11 million nationwide \u201cencounters\u201d with migrants during the Biden administration, including millions who were rapidly expelled from the country; even adding in so-called gotaways who evaded detection,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/homeland.house.gov\/2024\/10\/22\/chairman-green-on-september-border-encounter-numbers-we-simply-cannot-go-on-like-this-as-a-country\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">estimated<\/a>\u00a0by House Republicans as being roughly 2 million, there\u2019s no way the total is \u201c21 million.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2uqecc5000e356mzzhchh5w@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <strong>Foreign countries and jails<\/strong>: Trump repeated his false claim that foreign leaders around the world have emptied their jails to allow their criminals to migrate to the United States.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2uqecc5000f356mkdj3i52x@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI said, \u2018I know what they\u2019re going to do. They\u2019re going to open up their jails and just dump them into the United States.\u2019 And that\u2019s what happened.\u201d He said he was talking not just about countries near the US but \u201call over South America, all over the Middle East, all over Asia, all over Europe, all over Africa.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2uqecc5000g356msji5yebk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            There is no evidence for this claim. The recorded global prison population increased from October 2021 to April 2024, from at least about\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.prisonstudies.org\/sites\/default\/files\/resources\/downloads\/world_prison_population_list_13th_edition.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">10.77 million people<\/a>\u00a0to at least about\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.prisonstudies.org\/sites\/default\/files\/resources\/downloads\/world_prison_population_list_14th_edition.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">10.99 million people<\/a>, according to the World Prison Population List compiled by experts in the United Kingdom.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2uqecc5000h356mzvkdcw3k@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI do a daily news search to see what\u2019s going on in prisons around the world and have seen absolutely no evidence that any country is emptying its prisons and sending them all to the US,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.icpr.org.uk\/people\/helen-fair\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Helen Fair<\/a>, co-author of the prison population list and research fellow at the Institute for Crime &amp; Justice Policy Research at Birkbeck, University of London, said in June, when Trump made a similar claim.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2uqecc5000i356mlgrdr0yq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <strong>Venezuela and jails<\/strong>: Trump repeated his baseless story about Venezuela in particular \u201cemptying their jails into our country,\u201d adding, \u201cThey\u2019ve taken all their criminals, most of them \u2013 the rest are coming, they\u2019re all coming \u2013 they\u2019ve taken their drug dealers, and they\u2019ve put them into the United States of America. Thank you very much, Kamala, appreciate it.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2uqecc5000j356mtsqjtukx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            There is no basis for the claim that Venezuela has somehow deliberately \u201cput\u201d criminals into the United States, and Trump has never corroborated the claim that it is emptying its prisons for migration purposes; experts have told CNN,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politifact.com\/factchecks\/2024\/apr\/10\/donald-trump\/donald-trump-exaggerates-venezuelan-crime-drop-and\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PolitiFact<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.factcheck.org\/2024\/06\/crime-drop-in-venezuela-does-not-prove-trumps-claim-the-country-is-sending-criminals-to-u-s\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FactCheck.org<\/a>\u00a0that they know of no evidence for it.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2uqecc5000k356mmun3ngry@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe have no evidence that the Venezuelan government is emptying its prisons or mental health institutions to send them outside the country, in other words, to the U.S. or any other country,\u201d Roberto Brice\u00f1o-Le\u00f3n, founder and director of the Venezuelan Observatory of Violence, an independent organization that tracks violence in the country, said in an email to CNN in June, after Trump made similar claims.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2uqecc5000l356mafmdhlji@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <strong>Harris and \u201cmissing\u201d or \u201cdead\u201d children<\/strong>: Trump falsely\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rev.com\/transcript-editor\/shared\/lI_UdwgwaPOXBm23OwbscQw-qHhrwAY0BIkND6_pYeSfl80UIYPTbUeJZhcYTkd0k1OJoPllzEj6kIkVnk5rFgX5YCI?loadFrom=PastedDeeplink&amp;ts=3827.94\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">claimed<\/a>\u202fthat, under Biden and Harris, \u201c325,000 children are missing, dead, sex slaves or slaves \u2013 325,000 children who came in through the open border are now missing. Many of them are dead.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2uqecc5000m356mvwrg8c3x@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Trump was grossly distorting federal statistics.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2uqecc5000n356mlm08z0r0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            He appeared to be referring to\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oig.dhs.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/assets\/Mga\/2024\/oig-24-46-aug24.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an August report<\/a>\u202ffrom the Homeland Security Department\u2019s Office of Inspector General, which said ICE reported more than 32,000 unaccompanied migrant children failed to appear as scheduled for immigration court hearings after being released or transferred out of custody between fiscal years 2019 and 2023 \u2013 a period that, notably, includes two years and four months under the Trump administration. The report also said that 291,000 unaccompanied migrant children during this period were not given notices to appear in court.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2uqecc5000o356mcrhrrdzk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The report said that ICE has \u201cno assurances\u201d these children \u201care safe from trafficking, exploitation, or forced labor.\u201d But it did not definitively assert that any of them were being exploited \u2013 let alone that many are dead, a claim experts say is nonsense.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2uqecc5000p356mv9ln31hx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Aaron Reichlin-Melnick, senior fellow at the American Immigration Council, told CNN in a message this summer: \u201cLong story short, no, there are not 320,000 kids missing. 32,000 kids missed court. That doesn\u2019t mean they\u2019re missing, it means they missed court (either because their sponsor didn\u2019t bring them or they are teenagers who didn\u2019t want to show up). The remaining 291,000 cases mentioned by the OIG are cases where ICE hasn\u2019t filed the paperwork to start their immigration court cases.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2uqecc5000q356mkfiq3zjc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <strong>FEMA and North Carolina<\/strong>: Trump repeated his false claim that the federal government has not responded to Hurricane Helene in North Carolina, saying, \u201cThey haven\u2019t shown up.\u00a0They\u2019re not in North Carolina. The people of North Carolina have suffered incredibly and there\u2019s just nobody to help them.\u00a0\u201c\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2uqecc5000r356m1ykk0qt8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            This is not even close to true; the Federal Emergency Management Agency immediately responded to the disaster in North Carolina and\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fema.gov\/press-release\/20241025\/biden-harris-administration-highlights-progress-one-month-hurricane-helene\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said Friday<\/a>\u202fthat it had more than 1,700 staff deployed in the state. FEMA\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fema.gov\/press-release\/20241017\/fema-support-north-carolina-surpasses-100-million\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said on October 16<\/a>\u202fthat it had approved more than $100 million in individual aid to North Carolina residents.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2uqecc5000s356mosfq72kh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            At a briefing in early October, North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper, a Democrat,\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/mkd83vKv8l0?feature=shared&amp;t=97\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>, \u201cWe\u2019re grateful for the quick actions and close communications that we have had with the president and with the FEMA team.\u201d State emergency management director Will Ray said at the briefing: \u201cWe\u2019re grateful for the support not just from the 22 states that have sent teams to support us but also from our FEMA team and other members of the federal family.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2uqecc5000t356m2tskrhef@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <strong>FEMA and migrants<\/strong>: Trump, still criticizing the hurricane response, said of FEMA: \u201cThey said that the money was spent on bringing illegal migrants into our country \u2013 they spent close to a billion dollars.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2uqecc5000u356mxcec23qu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            FEMA\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/10\/06\/politics\/fact-check-trump-helene-response-north-carolina\/index.html\">did not<\/a> spend its disaster relief money on undocumented people.<br \/>Congress appropriated the agency more than\u202f$35 billion in disaster relief funds for fiscal 2024, according to\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fema.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/documents\/fema_ocfo-september2024disasterrelieffundreport.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">official FEMA statistics<\/a>, and also gave FEMA a much smaller pool of money, $650 million in fiscal 2024, for a program aimed at helping communities shelter migrants. Contrary to Trump\u2019s claims, these are two separate pots of funds.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2uqecc5000v356m6cc5dwdv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <strong>Trump and the Nord Stream 2 pipeline<\/strong>: Trump repeated his false claim that he \u201cended\u201d Russia\u2019s Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline to Germany. He did not end the project. In reality, he signed sanctions related to the pipeline into law about three years into his presidency, when the pipeline was already about 90% complete, and the state-owned Russian company behind the project\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ogj.com\/pipelines-transportation\/pipelines\/article\/14189195\/nord-stream-2-pipelay-resumes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a>\u202fin December 2020 that construction was resuming.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2uqecc5000w356ms62g52f0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <strong>Veterans Choice<\/strong>: Trump revived one of the lies he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2020\/08\/08\/politics\/trump-veterans-choice-paula-reid\/index.html\">told most frequently as president<\/a>, falsely claiming he got the Veterans Choice program approved after others had \u201cbeen trying to do this for 48 years.\u201d The Veterans Choice program was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2020\/08\/08\/politics\/trump-veterans-choice-paula-reid\/index.html\">actually signed into law in 2014 by his predecessor<\/a>, President Barack Obama. Trump signed a law in 2018, the VA MISSION Act, that expanded and modified the program established under Obama.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2uqecc5000x356mam4as5kr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <strong>Who pays tariffs:\u00a0<\/strong>Trump\u00a0repeated\u00a0his frequent false claim that, through tariffs, \u201cChina paid us hundreds of billions of dollars.\u201d US importers\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/09\/09\/politics\/fact-check-trump-vance-tariffs\/index.html\">make the tariff payments<\/a>, not China, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usitc.gov\/press_room\/news_release\/2023\/er0315_63679.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study after study<\/a>\u00a0has found that Americans bore the overwhelming majority of the cost of Trump\u2019s tariffs on China.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2uqecc5000y356m1rcu202z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <strong>Previous presidents and tariffs on China:\u00a0<\/strong>Trump repeated his frequent false claim that no previous president had imposed tariffs on Chinese imports, saying,\u00a0\u201cNo other president\u2019s gotten 10 cents from China.\u201d The US was\u00a0actually\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.factcheck.org\/2019\/05\/trump-wrong-on-china-trade-again\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">generating billions per year in revenue<\/a>\u00a0from tariffs on Chinese imports before Trump took office; in fact, the US has had tariffs on Chinese imports since\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fraser.stlouisfed.org\/title\/tariff-1789-hamilton-tariff-5884?page=2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1789<\/a>. Trump\u2019s predecessor, Obama,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2017\/01\/03\/news\/economy\/obama-china-tire-tariff\/index.html\">imposed additional tariffs<\/a>\u00a0on Chinese goods.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2uqecc5000z356mkh43gqfu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <strong>Inflation: <\/strong>Trump blamed Harris for causing \u201cthe worst inflation in our lifetime, maybe the worst inflation we\u2019ve ever had, because I don\u2019t think they\u2019re \u2013 I mean, I know for a fact they\u2019re not adding all of the numbers; if they did, I think it\u2019s the worst inflation probably in our \u2013 the lifetime of the country.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2uqecc50010356m34xydg43@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Aside from the claim about Harris\u2019 role, it\u2019s not true the US has had its worst inflation ever during the Biden administration or that the Bureau of Labor Statistics isn\u2019t \u201cadding all of the numbers\u201d;\u00a0Trump could fairly say that the US\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/07\/13\/economy\/cpi-inflation-june\/index.html#:~:text=Inflation%20surged%20to%20a%20new,the%20Bureau%20of%20Labor%20Statistics.\">inflation rate<\/a>\u00a0hit a 40-year high in June 2022, when it was 9.1%, but that was not close to the all-time\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/opub\/mlr\/2014\/article\/one-hundred-years-of-price-change-the-consumer-price-index-and-the-american-inflation-experience.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">record\u00a0<\/a>of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fred.stlouisfed.org\/series\/CPIAUCNS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">23.7%, set in 1920<\/a>. (And the rate has since plummeted. The most recent available inflation rate at the time Trump spoke here was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/10\/10\/economy\/us-cpi-consumer-inflation-september\/index.html#:~:text=The%20Consumer%20Price%20Index%2C%20which,Bureau%20of%20Labor%20Statistics%20report.\">2.4%\u00a0in September<\/a>.)<strong> <\/strong>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2uqecc50011356mddluko0b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <strong>The European Union and products<\/strong>: Trump made a subjective claim that the \u201cEuropean Union is taking advantage of us,\u201d then repeated his false claim that \u201cthey don\u2019t take our product.\u201d While the European Union certainly has <a href=\"https:\/\/crsreports.congress.gov\/product\/pdf\/IF\/IF10931\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">some trade barriers<\/a> that make it harder for US companies to export products there, it\u2019s a massive exaggeration to categorically declare \u201cthey don\u2019t take our product.\u201d The US\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bea.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/2024-10\/trad0824.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">exported more than $639 billion worth<\/a>\u00a0of total goods and services to the European Union in 2023.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2uqecc50012356md5qudphl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <strong>The trade deficit with the European Union<\/strong>: Trump repeated another false claim about the European Union: \u201cWe have a deficit with them of over $300 billion, think of that.\u201d The US goods and services trade deficit with the European Union\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bea.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/2024-10\/trad0824.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">was about $125 billion in 2023<\/a>. Even counting goods trade alone and excluding services, the 2023 deficit was about $201 billion.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2uqecc50013356mc2ut7bdk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <strong>The formation of the European Union<\/strong>: Trump revived a false claim from his presidency, asserting that the European Union was created to take advantage of the US: \u201cI mean, look, they united in order to take advantage of the United States. That\u2019s why they united. That\u2019s why they formed their coalition.
