.<\/p>\n<p>Travelers no longer need to fear getting stuck in a financial holding pattern should their flight get scrapped. <\/p>\n<p>US airlines are now required to issue passengers automatic refunds for tickets and other flight-related expenses should their flight get canceled or significantly delayed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday, our automatic refund rule goes into full effect,\u201d Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg declared in <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SecretaryPete\/status\/1850959531657871624\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a Monday post on X<\/a>. \u201cAirlines are required to provide prompt cash refunds without passengers having to ask.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>\u201cBest in Travel href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/04\/24\/business\/biden-cracks-down-on-airlines-junk-fees-orders-instant-refunds-for-canceled-flights\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Department of Transportation proposed in April<\/a> to expedite the reimbursement process, increase transparency, and protect against \u201chidden junk fees.\u201d <\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>While portions of DOT\u2019s new policy were instated as early as May, some provisions took longer to go into effect due to their lead times, per <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/travel\/airline-news\/2024\/10\/28\/new-refund-rules-for-delayed-and-canceled-flights\/75837222007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">USA Today.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Under <a href=\"https:\/\/www.transportation.gov\/briefing-room\/fact-sheet-biden-harris-administration-announces-rules-deliver-automatic-refunds-and\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the new rules<\/a>, passengers are entitled to automatic refunds sans having to explicitly request them, and these reimbursements must be processed within seven days for credit card purchases, and 20 days for other payment methods.<\/p>\n<p>Previously, airlines were required to give refunds, provided the passenger didn\u2019t book alternative flights with them, but the exact window for reimbursement was ambiguous.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Baggage fee is to be disclosed Sadowski<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In addition, these refunds must be paid in full \u2014 minus the value of flights already taken \u2014 to the original form of payment \u201cused to make the purchase, such as credit card or airline miles,\u201d per the policy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAirlines may not substitute vouchers, travel credits, or other forms of compensation unless the passenger affirmatively chooses to accept alternative compensation,\u201d it reads.<\/p>\n<p>A significant flight delay, per the policy, constitutes three hours for a domestic flight and six hours for an international itinerary \u2014 time limits that apply both to departure and arrival delays.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>And the flights aren\u2019t the only portions of the trip that are subject to refunds.
