<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/09\/26\/lifestyle\/similar-health-benefits-for-weekend-warriors-everyday-exercisers-study\/\">weekend warriors<\/a> may be just as likely to lower their risk of mild dementia as gym rats, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurekalert.org\/news-releases\/1062686?\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a new study finds<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Over 10,000 middle-aged Mexico residents were divided into four groups based on their exercise habits \u2014 no-exercisers, weekend warriors who exercised\/played sports once or twice a week, regularly active people who exercised three or more times a week and a combined group of weekend warriors and regularly active people.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>The study authors determined that weekend warriors are 25% less likely to develop mild cognitive impairment than people who don\u2019t exercise. <span class=\"credit\">Bojan \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Researchers from Chile and other countries monitored the participants for an average of 16 years and had them undergo <a href=\"https:\/\/cgatoolkit.ca\/Uploads\/ContentDocuments\/MMSE.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">an assessment<\/a> to see if they developed mild cognitive impairment, which is often a <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/07\/26\/lifestyle\/neurosurgeon-reveals-10-simpleways-to-lower-dementia-risk\/\">precursor to dementia<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Some 2,400 cases of cognitive decline were identified, representing 26% of the no-exercisers, 14% of the weekend warriors and 18.5% of the regularly active group.<\/p>\n<p>After accounting for age, education, tobacco use, sleep patterns, diet and alcohol consumption, the study authors determined weekend warriors were 25% less likely to develop mild dementia than the no-exercisers.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Over 10,000 middle-aged participants were alignleft\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>The regularly active people lowered their chances of mild cognitive impairment by 11% and the combined group by 16%.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers also took into consideration about 450 people whose scores on the assessment put them on the line for a mild cognitive impairment diagnosis.<\/p>\n<p>Compared with no-exercisers, weekend warriors were 13% less likely to develop mild dementia under the changed parameters.<\/p>\n<p>The regularly active group and the combined group each had 12% reduced odds.\u00a0The results were similar for men and women.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo the best of our knowledge, this is the first prospective cohort study to show that the weekend warrior physical activity pattern and the regularly active physical activity pattern are associated with similar reductions in the risk of mild dementia,\u201d the researchers wrote Tuesday in the <a href=\"https:\/\/bjsm.bmj.com\/lookup\/doi\/10.1136\/bjsports-2024-108460\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">British Journal of Sports Medicine<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>The study authors say that 13% middle-aged adults exercised at least once or twice a week.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/health.gov\/our-work\/nutrition-physical-activity\/physical-activity-guidelines\/current-guidelines\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans<\/a> states that each week, adults should aim for 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity \u2014 that can be spread over several days or done all at once \u2014 and two days of muscle strengthening.<\/p>\n<p>Physical activity is known to <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/10\/08\/lifestyle\/effects-of-sleep-exercise-could-linger-in-brains-for-over-two-weeks\/\">improve brain health<\/a> in a variety of ways.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExercise may increase brain-derived neurotrophic factor concentrations [molecules that support the growth and survival of neurons] and brain plasticity,\u201d the study authors wrote. \u201cPhysical activity is also associated with greater brain volume, greater executive function and <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/03\/21\/lifestyle\/neuroscientist-shares-5-lifestyle-tweaks-to-improve-memory\/\">greater memory<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"single__inline-module inline-module their dementia history and physical activity, which wasn\u2019t objectively measured.<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, the study authors say their findings have \u201cimportant implications for policy and practice because the weekend warrior physical activity pattern may be a more convenient option for busy<br \/>people in Latin America and elsewhere.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/09\/26\/lifestyle\/similar-health-benefits-for-weekend-warriors-everyday-exercisers-study\/\">A different study<\/a>, published last month, found weekend warriors can lower their risk of developing 264 diseases just as well as people who work out throughout the week.<a
