On the morning of Feb. 24, 2023, the police found Mr. Banfield\u2019s wife, Christine Banfield, 37, close to death after being stabbed, and another man, Joseph Ryan, 38, shot dead in the Banfields\u2019 home in Herndon, Va., about 20 miles northwest of the nation\u2019s capital. Ms. Banfield died later at a hospital.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Ms. Magalh\u00e3es was charged in October 2023 with second-degree murder in the shooting death of Mr. Ryan.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Steve Descano, the attorney for the Fairfax County Commonwealth, told reporters on Tuesday that, as part of a plea deal, Ms. Magalh\u00e3es pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the shooting death of Mr. Ryan. Her trial had been scheduled to begin in November.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">As part of the plea agreement, prosecutors downgraded the murder charge that she faced and agreed to recommend that Ms. Magalh\u00e3es, who has been in custody, be released with credit for time served after Mr. Banfield\u2019s trial if she continues to cooperate with the authorities.
